Daily Deals: Snarky elves, hot Marines, and a recommended read from...

When Elves Attack (Serge Storms Series #14) by Tim DorseyWhen Elves Attack by Tim Dorsey. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

I’m dreaming of a Serge Christmas . . .

It’s ho, ho, ho time in this hilarious and wacky Florida holiday tale, featuring bighearted psychopath Serge Storms and his sidekick, Coleman. Like Santa, Serge knows who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. Few can give with the generosity and creativity of Serge, and as December 24 rolls around, he is filling up the Serge sleigh with an unforgettable bag of presents.

But before that, it’s all a big free-range Christmas office party, where Serge will be spreading his special cheer. And there’s that last-minute go-for-broke spree at the mall (just beware of those attacking elves—they bite). So grab a six-pack, spike the eggnog, and hit the dunes on the beach as Serge and Coleman roast some nuts on an open fire and prove that reindeer really do know how to fly!

I’ve been informed that it is time to pull out the tree and the holiday decorations. PW says this book is full of snarky humor and a nice offset to the sweetness of most holiday stories.

Officer and the Secret Jeanette MurrayOfficer and the Secret by Jeanette Murray. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

If There’s One Thing He Hates, It’s a Secret…

Coming home after a rough deployment, Captain Dwayne Robertson wants some stability in his life, and finds it in the friendship he’s forged with Veronica Gibson while he was away. But her past is a well-guarded mystery, and Dwayne doesn’t know if he can deal with a woman who has something to hide…

And She’s Filled with Them…

Veronica Gibson doesn’t want anyone to know about her bizarre upbringing. She’s finally escaped her missionary parents and would be enjoying her independence if she didn’t feel so insecure about fitting in. She can easily envision a glorious future with Dwayne—but can she build a new life on a web of lies?

This book sounds right up my alley plus I don’t think I’ve ever read a romance featuring a Dwayne as the hero. The chapter excerpt makes it sound like Dwayne must suffer quite a bit of PTSD. The one negative review questioned the chemistry and the slow moving romance. Not to mention the lack of steam.

Also Known As by Robin BenwayAlso Known As by Robin Benway. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations.

Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She’ll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school’s security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case . . . all while trying not to blow her cover.

Brie and Vi_dao have been talking this author up on Twitter. I bought one of her books and now it seems like the world is saying that I should buy this one too. Jia gave this book a B+ back in March. In the review, Jia says “Despite the espionage aspects, Also Known As is very much a fish out of water story. Readers expecting a fast-paced twisting and turning thriller plot should look elsewhere. This is the story of a girl used to living one life, who’s always dreamed of living another, and who now struggles to balance the two. Now that Maggie has a true friend and a guy she likes, how can she go back to the one she had before? Will she have to resign herself to constantly living a lie and lying to everyone she meets?”

Widdershins by Jordan L. HawkWiddershins by Jordan L. Hawk. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Some things should stay buried.
Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he’s ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man.

So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin left the Pinkertons following the death of his partner, hoping to start a new life. But the powerful cult which murdered Glenn has taken root in Widdershins, and only the spells in the book can stop them. Spells the intellectual Whyborne doesn’t believe are real.

As the investigation draws the two men closer, Griffin’s rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne’s iron control. When the cult resurrects an evil sorcerer who commands terrifying monsters, can Whyborne overcome his fear and learn to trust? Will Griffin let go of his past and risk falling in love? Or will Griffin’s secrets cost Whyborne both his heart and his life?

Reader Julia sent this deal to me. She said that it is the first in a series and the third one is due to be released on Dec 5. “It’s a historical/paranormal/mystery/horror type book and it’s quite good.” Thanks Julia!

I bought Widdershins and Officer and The Secret. The first book in the series: Officer Says I Do is also on special for $1.96. I was going to buy that too but Amazon tells me I bought it in December 2012. Thank god for Amazon instant order updates.
