At Home in Mitford (Mitford Series #1) Jan KaronAt Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

The first novel in Jan Karon’s bestselling and beloved Mitford series

It’s easy to feel at home in Mitford, North Carolina. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are friendly. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won’t go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that’s sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

The first in a series of novels, this heartwarming book introduces readers to a small, charming North Carolina town and its equally charming denizens. Filled with the mysteries and miracles of everyday life and rich, provincial humor, At Home in Mitford will have readers clamoring for more. Followed by a sequel, A Light in the Window.

This is a total blast from the past. I enjoyed reading this series (although I never finished it. I petered out after about book 5). It’s a charming romance and small town story. One of the few books that my mother and I both read and enjoyed.

Wild Heat by Bella AndreWild Heat by Bella Andre. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

He’s a hotshot firefighter addicted to risk.
She’s the sultry beauty he never saw coming.

Maya Jackson doesn’t sleep with strangers. Until the night grief sent her to the nearest bar and into the arms of the most explosive lover she’s ever had. Six months later, the dedicated arson investigator is coming face-to-face with him again. Gorgeous, grinning Logan Cain. Her biggest mistake. Now her number one suspect in a string of deadly wildfires.

Risking his life on a daily basis is what gets Logan up in the morning. As the leader of the elite Tahoe Pines Hotshot Crew, he won’t back down from a blaze—or from beautiful, lethal Maya Jackson. She may have seduced him with her tears and her passion, but it’ll be a cold day in hell before Logan lets down his guard again. But when Maya’s life is threatened, his natural-born-hero instincts kick in, and Logan vows to protect the woman sworn to bring him down. And as desire reignites, nothing—not the killer fire nor the killer hot on their trail—can douse the flames.…
From the Paperback edition.

Before Bella Andre was a self publishing phenom, she wrote books for Pocket, I think, and Random House. I wasn’t a fan of the one football book I read (the football was pretty poorly done) so I don’t think I ever graduated to the hot firemen stories.

The Mane Event (Pride Stories Series #1) by Shelly LaurenstonThe Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Mace Llewellyn. Brendon Shaw. Two tall, gorgeous, sexy alpha heroes who are 100% male—with a little something extra. Lion-shifters, to be exact, who can unleash every woman’s animal side and still look good—make that spectacular—in a suit…and even better out of it…
NYPD cop Desiree “Dez” MacDermot knows she’s changed a lot since she palled around with her childhood buddy, Mace. But it’s fair to say that Mace has changed even more. It isn’t just those too-sexy gold eyes, or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal body. It’s something in the way he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle… Meanwhile, for Tennessean Ronnie Lee Reed, New York City is the place where any girl—even one who runs with a Pack—can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion shifter men like Brendon Shaw. But she needn’t worry, because now that Brendon’s set his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go…

I admit I haven’t loved the recent entries into this series but the first one is a must buy at 99c. If you like wise cracking females and alpha heroes, then definitely get this book.

9781420131239_p0_v2_s260x420Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard by Vanessa Kelly. $ 1.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

In this witty, sensual new series, Vanessa Kelly introduces the Renegade Royals, illegitimate sons of the Royal Princes who are finding their rightful places in society…

Accomplished spy Aden St. George prefers to stay away from the frivolous ton, especially after the way his mother was used by the Prince Regent. But his latest mission compels him to guard unconventional, vibrant Lady Vivien Shaw. Rescuing her from kidnappers was easy. Resisting her beauty is not. Duty demands he keep an eye on her—and naturally, his lips soon follow. For someone who views entanglements as a weakness, this is pure, delicious folly…

Though grateful for Aden’s help, Vivien has secrets she must keep hidden. Yet with her abductors still at large, she needs Aden’s protection almost as much as she craves his touch…

This actually received a starred PW review: ” Characters who could be flat clichés are made fresh and appealing by dramatic storytelling. Kelly (Sex and the Single Earl) combines diverting dialogue, delightful surprises, and finely tuned pacing to make this a winner.”

I’m tempted by the Jan Karon book, I enjoy settings like this. But was wondering since the main character is a church rector how pervasive is the religious theme? I can tolerate some but really don’t care for “inspirational” romances.

At Home in Mitford seems to be $2.99, now, at Amazon and BN.

Also, those looking for a contemporary western for .99 might want to check out CJ Carmichael’s Good Together on sale at Amazon until Friday. [I was asked by her publisher to host her blog tour, so have more info here if anybody wants it: http://planetpooks.com/yogurt-canada-and-tennessee-walking-horses-ftw/

@Joanna: I can’t recall how religious it is but I’m going to say that it’s not overly so or I wouldn’t have liked it. I have a strong aversion to preachy books.

I adore Shelly Laurenston’s Pride series. She has a gift for family dynamics, dialogue and humor! My hubby even enjoys these. Have you check out her Dragon Kin Series under the G A Aiken name? Hilarious and just a little twisted ;-)

Ha. My mother-in-law gave me At Home in Mitford in paperback late last year and told me I’d love it. I smiled politely and stuck it on the shelf. Now I’m going to read it…if I do love it, I won’t tell her what actually made me crack the spine. ;)
