Mystery Man by Kristen AshleyMystery Man by Kristen Ashley. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Night time is the right time…
Gwendolyn Kidd has met the man of her dreams. He’s hot, he’s sexy, and what started as a no-names-exchanged night of passion has blossomed into a year and a half-long pleasure fest. Sure, it’s a little strange that he only appears in her bed at night, but Gwen is so sure he’s the one, she just can’t turn him away…

Hawk Delgado knows more about Gwen than she could ever imagine. She’s gorgeous, headstrong, and skittish about relationships. But Hawk is facing his own demons, demons that keep him from connecting with anyone. Yet when Gwen is drawn into Denver’s lethal underground scene, Hawk’s protective nature comes out full force. The problem is, when Gwen gets a dose of Hawk’s Alpha attitude in the daylight, she’s not so sure he’s the one anymore….

130,000 words

This is a compelling story despite its somewhat disturbing opening sequence where Gwen has sex with a stranger (at least she uses protection!) for several weeks without bothering to get to know his name. It’s the start of a series that includes Tack (and you actually meet Tack in this book). In the “Man” series, I like this one and Motorcycle Man.

Poughkeepsie by Debra AnastasiaPoughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him-just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others . . . he’s homeless. Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the world would run from him in the harsh light of day.
Each day, Livia McHugh smiles politely and acknowledges her fellow commuters as she waits for the train to the city. She dismisses this kindness as nothing special, just like her. She’s the same as a million other girls-certainly no one to be cherished. But special or not, she smiles every day, never imagining that someone would rely on the simple gesture as if it were air to breathe.

When the moment comes that Livia must do more than smile, without hesitation she steps into the fray to defend the homeless man. And she’s surprised to discover an inexplicable connection with her new friend. After danger subsides, their smiles become conversation. Their words usher in a friendship, which awakens something in each of them. But it’s not long before their bond must prove its strength. Entanglements from the past challenge both their love and their lives.
Blake’s heart beats for Livia’s, even if her hands have to keep its rhythm. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails. Love never fails, right?

In an interwoven tale of unlikely loves and relationships forged by fire, Debra Anastasia takes readers into the darkest corners of human existence, only to show them the radiant power of pure adoration and true sacrifice. Complicated families and confused souls find their way to light in this novel, which manages to be racy, profane, funny, and reverent all at once.

Twilight fan fiction, I believe? Has a huge following.

Boomerang Bride by Fiona LoweBoomerang Bride by Fiona Lowe. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Matilda Geoffrey had risked it all for love.

She’d left Australia to be with Barry—the man who had swept her off her virtual feet. Now, wearing a wedding dress, she’s alone on Main Street in small-town Wisconsin, and things aren’t working out exactly as planned?.

In town for his annual family visit, Marc Olsen had never seen a bride quite like Matilda—staring into a storefront window, holding a tottering wedding cake and looking desperately in need of a groom. He doesn’t have many warm feelings for his hometown, but meeting Matilda just as she discovers she’s been scammed by her online “fiancé” stirs something in him.

Matilda is not the kind of woman Marc imagined himself with, and Marc is anything but the romantic hero that Matilda has always dreamed of. But as unlikely circumstances throw them together, can they let go of their misconceptions and risk their hearts for love?

2012 RITA Winner for Contemporary Single Title Romance

This was the first digital book to win a RITA I believe (although not the first nominated). Sunita gave it a B.  “it’s a romance that is rooted in family and community. Matilda, the outsider, has lost her roots and misses that life, and Hobin provides a new opportunity for her. Marc has fled the responsibilities that accompany those famility and community ties, but he hasn’t abandoned them entirely. Their romance plays out against this family and community setting. The ending is a bit fairy-tale and I could have done without the epilogue, but I’m not a big epilogue fan anyway”

Mystery Man is not my favorite of the Dream Man series–I place it behind Motorcycle Man and Law Man but ahead of Wild Man. One problem I had was how long Gwen had sex with Hawk without knowing who he was. I think it was more than a year, not a few weeks. But, it’s still a good book and an absolute steal at $0.99. This whole series is one where I envy readers who are getting to read it for the first time.

Boomerang Bride was such a good book too, definitely worth $0.99.

I remember hearing good things about Poughkeepsie when it first came out. I think I’ll give it a try. I’m also going to buy the box set as well–5 books for $0.99, what’s the worse that can happen?

Has anyone read any of the “Knight” box set?

I’m in the mood for a good medieval, but right now my time is infinitely more valuable than my money, and I don’t want to waste any of it on Ye Olde Knights With Perfect Teeth Eating Potatos, if you know what I mean.

I really disliked Poughkeepsie. I bought it on a whim because it was .99 cents last year not knowing it was Twilight fan fiction, and I found that there were major problems with the way it was written including grammar, wording and general making sense (which is very common in self-published books), but I just thought there was too much going on in this story and it was too ridiculous. After learning it was Twilight FF I was like, OK, reinforces why I didn’t like it I think…

I had until now resisted the temptation to test drive the KA crack, but for 99 cents, I gave in. Read that fluffy marshmallow in one evening straight and bought Motorcycle Man before I went to bed. And my new year’s resolution was to stay away from candy! doh.

Thank you Sula for keeping me away! I haven’t started KA, although I’m definitely circling with intent to read … but I have a book to finish writing and I know that I get obsessive about completing things so I need the support group. Or at least someone saying “do as I say not as I do.”

(I will allow myself to start any series I want after I finish this darn book but until then I will only read one-offs, that’s my resolution.)
