Hearts of Shadow (#2) $2.99

The third book is out on March 4.

I really loved this first book. I felt the second was rather disjointed and not as compelling but I’m intrigued about the first one. The myths were ones I hadn’t read a ton before.

Thursdays in the Park Hilary BoydThursdays in the Park by Hilary Boyd. $ 1.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Called “a warm and well-written case for love affairs in later life” (Daily Telegraph), Thursdays in the Park was a runaway best-seller in the united Kingdom. Boyd’s debut novel is a touching, romantic tale of new attraction and old loyalties.

Jeanie is on the brink of turning sixty, and the man she’s been married to for more than half of her life has suddenly abandoned the marital bed. When Jeanie’s husband George retreats from his conjugal duties, she is deeply hurt and very confused: Has she done something wrong? Is he in love with someone else? Her pained bewilderment turns to anger as he remains unable, or unwilling, to provide answers. The bright spot of Jeanie’s week is Thursday, the day she takes her granddaughter to the park. There, one day, she meets Ray — age-appropriate, kind-hearted, easygoing, and downright sexy. In short, he is everything that George is not. As her relationship with Ray begins to blossom and she begins to think that her life might hold in store a bold second act, she begins to wonder if she has the courage to take a step off the precipice of routine and duty and into the swirling winds of romance.
From the Trade Paperback edition.

This sounds intriguing because it’s a later in love romance. One of the pros per the reviews is the dialogue which is described as both poignant and funny but it does revolve around adultery and I’m not sure how the romance unspools.

I enjoyed Thursdays in the Park. The heroine was a bit passive but her upbringing explains a lot of her behavior. Without getting spoilery, I will say that the adultery did not bother me too much, and I am usually very sensitive about that issue. Very happy to see a romance between two 60 year olds that isn’t played for laughs. Not a keeper but a solid B.

I didn’t get very far with Thursdays in the Park. Too much adultery for me. Wasn’t at all sure whether there was going to be an ending I’d be happy with.

Hearts of Darkness is currently coming up with a higher price at Amazon. I put in the price match reques, so hopefully they’ll match the B&N $1.99.

The Kira Brady will be the most book you’ve ever bought for $1.99. It is one of the most-layered and most complex paranormals I’ve ever read. It’s amazingly hard to describe – but it’s great. I can’t wait for the release of the third story (oooooh – the Crane Wife theme ….). So, how to describe. Pacific Northwest Native mythology clashing with Ancient Viking mythology. Native shapeshifter clan vs. dragon clan. Ruined Seattle. Sort of steam punk, sort of urban fantasy, sort of post-apocalyptic. Very deep.

I’m normally a very fast reader – I just finished a Lee Child Reacher book that I started yesterday afternoon – but Hearts of Darkness took me several days, in a good way, b/c there was so much book and story to it. Nothing had only one layer, and the details were so intense I kept re-reading as I went b/c I wanted to build each section before I went on.

I give Hearts of Darkness an A – I think maybe DA did too? Or an A-?

“The only ALL SEAL anthology” cover claim is misleading as three of those authors also wrote novellas/shorts for 2011’s SEAL of My Dreams (Marliss Melton and Gennita Low. Plus as noted in the blurb the Stephanie Tyler story is the same one first published in that “all SEAL” anthology).

@Kat: Amazon hasn’t matched on Hearts of Darkness yet but they did match Google’s price on Hearts of Shadow. That one is now $2.51.
