The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination: Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil GeniusThe Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination by John Joseph Adams. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

From Victor Frankenstein to Lex Luthor, from Dr. Moreau to Dr. Doom, readers have long been fascinated by insane plans for world domination and the madmen who devise them. Typically, we see these villains through the eyes of good guys. This anthology, however, explores the world of mad scientists and evil geniuses—from their own wonderfully twisted point of view.

An all-star roster of bestselling authors—including Diana Gabaldon, Daniel Wilson, Austin Grossman, Naomi Novik, and Seanan McGuire…twenty-two great storytellers all told—have produced a fabulous assortment of stories guaranteed to provide readers with hour after hour of high-octane entertainment born of the most megalomaniacal mayhem imaginable.

Everybody loves villains. They’re bad; they always stir the pot; they’re much more fun than the good guys, even if we want to see the good guys win. Their fiendish schemes, maniacal laughter, and limitless ambition are legendary, but what lies behind those crazy eyes and wicked grins? How—and why—do they commit these nefarious deeds? And why are they so set on taking over the world?

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, you’re in luck: It’s finally time for the madmen’s side of the story.

Some pretty famous authors contributed to this collection of short stories.

Sketch a Falling Star by Sharon PapeSketch a Falling Star by Sharon Pape. $1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

When the Way Off Broadway Players get swept up in a flash flood while sightseeing in Arizona, Rory McCain’s aunt Helene and her fellow amateur thespians survive – with the exception of Preston Wright. The victim was actually quite an actor – he was a womanizing scam artist who duped nearly everyone in the troupe, as well as an ex-con who operated under various aliases.

While Preston’s death was found to be an act of nature, Rory can’t discount the possibility that human nature may have contributed to his drowning. But even as she investigates the cast of characters to find out which one played the villain, Rory is finally on the verge of solving a very personal cold case: the murder of her ghost partner, Zeke.

Berkley Prime Crime specializes in publishing cozy mysteries. This is #3 in the A Portrait of Crime Mystery Series. The reviews are all over the place. A couple readers said it was the best in the series while other readers felt that there was no progression in the characters and that it relied too much on hokey stuff to fill the pages. One reader asked if the writer was getting paid by the word because there was so much “faffing” around.

Hunter's Rise (Hunters Series) by Shiloh WalkerHunter’s Rise by Shiloh Walker. $ 1.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

His past is a mystery, even to him-a werewolf with memories so lost in a fog that even the Hunter’s healers cannot help him. More than a century ago, Toronto awakened on an unfamiliar street, naked and alone- and dogged by the unanswered questions of his enigmatic existence.

The vampire Sylvia is no Hunter. She’s a mercenary who just barely skates this side of what the Hunters consider acceptable. All she wants is to hunt her quarry, and make a lot of money. Her newest prey is a devious killer. But her newest complication is of a more intimate sort: a blonde, blue-eyed werewolf who interferes with her plans in so many exquisite ways.

Tori from Smexybooks writes this in her C+ star review:

The romance between them is hot yet bittersweet. The chemistry smolders in the background as they struggle to get past old emotional scars and baggage. It’s a major part of the storyline and tends to overwhelm the main arc at times. Their physical scenes are tasteful and satisfying though few and far between. There is a lot of sexual tension in here that delights and it was very easy to get caught up in the emotional undercurrents of these two damaged lovers.

Wedded in Scandal By: Jade LeeWedded in Scandal by Jade Lee. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

For his whole life, Robert Percy, Viscount Redhill, has worked hard to maintain a sterling reputation. And while it’s socially acceptable to seduce delectable dress designer Mrs. Mortimer, Robert learns too late the heartbreaking truth about who she used to be. No one would fault him for taking Mrs. Mortimer as his lover, but Robert knows that she should be the wife of a peer of the realm, not a mistress in hiding…

This is first in the Bridal Favors series. More than one reviewer was turned off by the hero’s pursuit of the heroine to make her his mistress even though she was a lady and she repeatedly refused him. He only changes his course at the very end. Another reviewer liked the banter.
