Tapestry Karen RanneyTapestry by Karen Ranney. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Ranney tells the story of first love/only love.

Laura Blake has been in love with her next door neighbor, Alex Weston, ever since she was a child. The Seven Years War separated them, however, and in the intervening years, Alex lost his youthful enthusiasm for life while Laura grew into a woman more certain than ever of her feelings. Alex returned home from the war horribly scarred, and it is his attitude about his disfigurement and his resultant reclusive life that poses the greatest threat to their happiness. Laura manages to convince Alex of the power of love. But then, fate steps in and separates them once again.

I can’t remember reading this one even though I know I must have. Ranney is a thoughtful author and her characters have far more nuance (usually) than the blurbs reveal. This was originally published by Kensington on 1995. Above All Others, a previously published backlist title, is also $1.99.  I realized at the end of this post that all these books were published by Kensington at one time or another except for the Collins book next.

Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles Series #1) Suzanne CollinsGregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles Series #1) by Suzanne Collins. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

This irresistible first novel tells the story of a quiet boy who embarks on a dangerous quest in order to fulfill his destiny — and find his father — in a strange world beneath New York City.

When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor’s arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland’s uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it — until he realizes it’s the only way to solve the mystery of his father’s disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

When eleven-year-old Gregor and his two-year-old sister are pulled into a strange underground world, they trigger an epic battle involving men, bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders while on a quest foretold by ancient prophecy.

Before she wrote the Hunger Games trilogy, Collins was well known for her middle grade fantasy series. I’m buying this for the tot even though it violates our female protagonist rule. He does have two sisters.

One thing I enjoy about deals is that it brings to our attention books that we missed the first time out. This one looks kind of humorous. Reviews say the story was original (a good thing in UF) but that it needed something more.

I think you and the tot will be OK with Gregor the Overlander. I read it a while ago, enjoyed it quite a lot, and felt as you do about (the need for and dearth of) female protagonists; if I remember correctly, however, there were plenty of strong female characters in this series. There is violence because there is war, but Gregor is really a pacifist, or at least very much against violence, and makes his decisions accordingly.
