HER LIFE IS ON THE LINE

For a year, U.S. marshal Hunter Davis has protected witness Annie Delacorte and her toddler daughter. But now, someone is determined to stop Annie from testifying against the men who killed her husband. To guard Annie, by-the-book Hunter will have to break a promise to himself: to not get emotionally involved. After all, he already cares more deeply than he ever imagined for the sweet family of two?a family he’ll do anything to keep safe and sound by his side.

Witness Protection: Hiding in plain sight

It’s free so why not get it, right? Well, some reviews say that there are too many threads left tangled and unresolved at the end of the story. It’s a faith based suspense book and both characters are believers.

Wallbanger
by Alice Clayton. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:
USA TODAY bestselling indie author Alice Clayton delights readers with the sexy, laugh-out-loud romance of Caroline and Simon in Wallbanger, the first book in the Cocktail series!

The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she’s gaining an—um—intimate knowledge of her new neighbor’s nocturnal adventures. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed “dating hiatus,” and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. The tension between them is as thick as the walls are thin, and the results just as mixed. Suddenly, Caroline is finding she may have discovered a whole new definition of neighborly…

In a delicious mix of silly and steamy, Alice Clayton dishes out a hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight.

Here’s my obligatory “this was twilight fan fiction”. I tried to read it in the fan fiction version which was a mistake because her vagina speaks with a Cockney accent in the fan fiction version. That was removed, I believe, in the published version. It’s billed as one of the funniest books published in 2013 and was a huge indie success before being picked up by Gallery.

No Escape
by Mary Burton. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:
He Was Taught How To Kill
Even behind bars, serial killer Harvey Day Smith exudes menace. Psychologist Jolene Granger has agreed to hear his dying confession, vowing not to let the monster inside her head. And Harvey has secrets to share—about bodies that were never found, and about the apprentice who is continuing his grisly work…

And Now He’ll Teach Them

He buries his victims alive the way his mentor Harvey did, relishing their final screams as the earth rains down. And as one last gift to the only father he knew, he’ll make the most perfect kill of all.

How To Die

Everything about this investigation is unnerving Jo, from Harvey’s fascination with her to the fact that she’s working alongside Texas Ranger Brody Winchester, her ex-husband. Harvey’s protégé is growing bolder and more vicious every day. And soon the trail of shallow graves will lead them to the last place Jo expected, and to the most terrifying truth of all…

My one encounter with Ms. Burton was at the inaugural RomCon, a conference held in Denver. We sat at a table together during one session and talked about favorite heroes. She and I had both read Liberating Lacey by Anne Calhoun and talked about what an intriguing hero Hunter was.

I went home and read Mary Burton. She writes a good mix of romance and mystery. I don’t think I read this title, but it’s got some good ratings.

Young Clementina
by D.E. Stevenson. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:
Love, Loss, and Love Again…

Charlotte Dean enjoys nothing more than the solitude of her London flat and the monotonous days of her work at a travel bookshop. But when her younger sister unceremoniously bursts into her quiet life one afternoon, Charlotte’s world turns topsy-turvy.

Beloved author D.E. Stevenson captures the intricacies of post-World War I England with a light, comic touch that perfectly embodies the spirit of the time. Alternatively heartbreaking and witty, The Young Clementina is a touch tale of love, loss, and redemption through friendship.

Jayne really enjoyed (and recommended)”Miss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson“. That title is on sale for $1.99 and has been featured here before.

Best Kind of Broken by Chelsea FineBest Kind of Broken by Chelsea Fine. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

“By turns humorous and heartbreaking, Best Kind Of Broken has become one of my favorites!” — CORA CARMACK, New York Times bestselling author

SOMETIMES MOVING ON MEANS MOVING IN

Pixie Marshall wishes every day she could turn back time and fix the past. But she can’t. And the damage is done. She’s hoping that a summer of free room and board working with her aunt at the Willow Inn will help her forget. Except there’s a problem: the resident handyman is none other than Levi Andrews. The handsome quarterback was once her friend-and maybe more-until everything changed in a life-shattering instant. She was hoping to avoid him, possibly forever. Now he’s right down the hall and stirring up feelings Pixie thought she’d long buried . . .

Levi can’t believe he’s living with the one person who holds all his painful memories. More than anything he wants to make things right, but a simple “sorry” won’t suffice-not when the tragedy that scarred them was his fault. Levi knows Pixie’s better off without him, but every part of him screams to touch her, protect her, wrap her in his arms, and kiss away the pain. Yet even though she’s so close, Pixie’s heart seems more unreachable than ever. Seeing those stunning green eyes again has made one thing perfectly clear-he can’t live without her.

(70,000 words)

I enjoyed this book and gave it a B-.

“While I’m getting allergic to the word broken–which has become overused in the New Adult genre–I didn’t feel like this book came off as tragedy porn. Instead, through circumstances revealed late in the book, two good friends were wrenched apart at the beginning of a burgeoning romance.”

I am *not* a fan of NA, but I liked “Best Kind of Broken”.

I bought “Wallbanger” because of the numerous positive reviews. I hope I don’t regret it. I hate to not finish a book, but there are too many good ones out there to waste time on a bad one.

@Monique D: I thought Wallbanger was pretty funny. The humor gets a little broad at times, especially with the character of a cat who’s a frustrated lothario. But if you like comedy with your romance, I bet you’ll enjoy it.

That cover to YOUNG CLEMENTINA is just soooo pretty, that I’m tempted to buy the book just to look at it.

But my TBR has already exhausted the capacity of my Nook….

I read the Gallery-published version of Wallbanger and had no idea it was originally Twilight fan fiction.
