A Rake's Midnight Kiss (Sons of Sin Series #2) by Anna CampbellA Rake’s Midnight Kiss by Anna Campbell. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Brilliant scholar Genevieve Barrett’s secret identity as the author of her father’s articles is her greatest deception-until her father’s handsome new student arrives on their doorstep. Genevieve recognizes him as the masked intruder who earlier tried to steal a priceless gem from their home. Keeping the seductive stranger’s identity hidden is a risk, but she’s got secrets of her own to keep.

Sir Richard Harmsworth fakes a rakish facade to show society that he doesn’t care about his bastard status. Yet haunted by his unknown father’s identity, Richard believes the Harmsworth Jewel will prove he’s the rightful heir. Intent on seducing the stone away from its owner, Richard finds himself face-to-face with a beauty more breathtaking than any jewel. But even as she steals Richard’s heart, Genevieve will be in greater danger than her coveted treasure . . .

I haven’t read Anna Campbell in forever. If you recall, when her titles became hot, they started calling her work “historical romance noir.”

9781429987660_p0_v1_s260x420Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Second in the Darynda Jones’ award-winning paranormal series that’s “hilarious and heartfelt, sexy and surprising.” (J.R. Ward)

When Charley Davidson and Cookie (her best friend/receptionist) have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. A friend of Cookie’s named Mimi disappeared five days earlier. This friend then sends Cookie a cryptic message telling them to meet her at a nearby coffee shop. The coffee is brewing, but Mimi’s still missing. There is, however, a clue left on the bathroom wall: a woman’s name, scribbled by Mimi. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm’s way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?

Here is your signpost for the most hilarious read of the summer: Second Grave On The Left.

This is the second in the series. We recently profiled the first book on sale for $2.99 as well and the third one “Third Grave Dead Ahead” is also $2.99 currently. Macmillan has a tendency to discount titles, one at a time, so you may be able to pick up the whole series on the cheap if you can wait.

THE NAVY SEAL’s E-MAIL ORDER BRIDE by National Bestselling author Cora Seton: If Mason Hall, Navy SEAL, can’t find a wife and get her pregnant–and convince his three brothers to marry, too–before the year is up, he’ll have to forfeit the ranch his family has prized for over a hundred years. Who knew one city girl and three wayward brothers could put up such a fight?

FALL OUT by National Bestselling author Zoe York: Drew Castle is a Navy SEAL with a bad case of indifference. Until Annie Martin shows up on his doorstep, scared out of her mind, and all of a sudden, keeping her safe becomes the most important mission of his life. And this time, he’s on his own.

CLOSE QUARTERS by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Roxie Rivera: Nationally Bestselling author Roxie Rivera brings you Close Quarters. Getting tangled up in Jamie Pearson’s latest hot mess–or her sheets–is the very last thing Navy SEAL Leland Gates needs, but in close quarters like these, there’s no denying the white-hot passion blazing between them.

KILLING HONOR by International Bestselling author S.M. Butler: Returning home after a disastrous extended deployment, Navy SEAL Brody Battles struggles with nightmares and government secrets building a wall between him and his wife, Devyn, especially when a security breach compromises his identity. While they’re adjusting to being a family again, an old enemy waits in the shadows, salivating for the sweet taste of revenge.

COMING IN HOT by Award-winning author Kimberley Troutte: For Navy SEAL Mack Riley, rescuing a family in Colombian jungles isn’t as hard as seeing the admiral’s daughter again, but since Jenna is joining the hostage rescue team, his orders are to protect her. In the heat of battle, love breaches their defenses just as missiles lock onto their coordinates …can they save the family and get out alive?

A SEAL’s SONG by Golden Heart Finalist author Jennifer Lowery: Navy SEAL Jack Taggart’s plans to catch some much-needed downtime between deployments are demolished when he risks everything to rescue beautiful wedding singer, Darci O’Shea, from a band of thieves. Will the battle between their inner demons be the hardest one to fight, or will they find rescue in each other’s arms?

SEALS’s EMBRACE by USA Today Bestselling author Elle James: Injured Navy SEAL and the critical care nurse he’s attempting to woo join forces to stop a terrorist attack.

I’m guessing that these are novellas and short stories given that the blurb doesn’t explicitly state that the collection is of full length novels. I’ve read Roxie Rivera’s Russian mob books and they weren’t bad. Nothing to write home about but I bought them for cheap so I didn’t feel bad about the purchase. I haven’t read any other authors in the collection.

Once a Duchess by Elizabeth BoyceOnce a Duchess by Elizabeth Boyce. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Isabelle Lockwood was a duchess, until her husband of only a few months wrongfully divorced her for adultery. Since then she’s been a pariah, living in anonymous exile to escape the prying eyes and wagging tongues of the town. More than anything, Isabelle longs for a family of her own, and so has to marry again. But society is ruthlessly unforgiving. To clear her name, Isabelle must face down her past – and the man who broke her heart and ruined her completely.

Marshall Lockwood, Duke of Monthwaite, was blindsided by his young bride’s infidelity. After the divorce Marshall licked his wounds, throwing himself into his botanical studies to forget his disastrous marriage. Now his former wife is back in Town, as beautiful and enticing as he remembers. As the Season throws them together again, Marshall can’t shake the feeling that Isabelle might not be the adulteress he took her for.

Sensuality Level: Sensual

The negative reviews say that the characters are unlikeable with the duke being a huge jerk and the heroine a doormat. One reviewer says that the hero is so cruel she can’t call him a hero.

Finally there was the issue of believability regarding the divorce, adultery and how that carried out.

I’ve avoided Anna Campbell since her debut was apparently pretty rape-y. Are her later books better?

@EGS: I was wondering the same thing.

The scholarly heroine in the Anna Campbell historical is very tempting

The only Anna Campbell book I’ve read is the book above. I liked it well enough and can’t remember anything contentious. It read like a pretty standard historical romance. I placed her in the ‘above average’ historical authors but not my all time favourite (admittedly I should read more than one, but I guess where I’m coming from is I wasn’t all ‘I must read everything Campbell has written ever!’).

    Hope that helps.

I think that maybe Ms. Milan’s book spoiled me for scholarly ladies. I bought the Campbell book when it was featured on SBTB and have decided to give up at 30% in. I’m finding it really boring, and there is no focus on her actual work and just a lot of stuff about how he likes how she looks (especially her blond hair and bosom) and lots of stuff about how he makes her feel like a woman unlike all the other pansy ass men around. I want ones where he really digs her intellect and loves watching her at work, besides wanting to get under her skirt.

I haven’t read Anna Campbell in a while either but she used to be a must read for me. I like her earlier, edgier books but now she seems to be writing pretty standard historical romances.
