The Seduction of Emily by Rachel BrimbleThe Seduction of Emily by Rachel Brimble. $ Free

From the Jacket Copy:

Seduction is a wicked game, and no one plays it better than the devilish Will Samson in Rachel Brimble’s captivating new novel…
Since girlhood, Emily Darson has accepted that she will marry Nicholas, the son of her father’s trusted business partner. The marriage contract safeguards her family legacy, Emily’s fortune, and everything she values—except her independence. Only when a sinfully handsome scoundrel enters her life does Emily realize quite how much a loveless match will cost her.

Will Samson has advanced from expert pickpocket to confidence trickster of the highest caliber. Now he has come to Bath to exact vengeance on the man who destroyed his mother—the man Emily will soon marry. But from his first glimpse of the enemy’s bewitching, spirited fiancée, Will’s plan changes.

Amid the ballrooms and salons of elegant society, heated glances explode into scandalous kisses. Revenge is sweet, but surrender will be irresistible…

80,000 Words

The three star reviews ding the setting as being vague and not important to the storyline. Nicholas is apparently a horrible rapist and his actions may be triggering for some. (Nicholas is the villain, not the hero) But I did see praise for how rape was handled in the story and that the romance is a slow burn with a good payoff.

Audra’s story, begun in 1926 England, is one of struggle. After the great passion of her marriage is replaced by tragedy, she vows to give her precious daughter Christina the world. Repaying the benefits of her mother’s iron-willed promise, Christina rises to the top of the fashion industry as the head of her own business empire in New York. As powerful and personal a tale as any Barbara Taylor Bradford has ever written, this is a wonderfully involving and sweeping novel of three remarkable women, each committing an act of will that will define their lives forever.

This deal is free at Amazon and $1.99 at other retailers. PW writes “While written in a comparatively minor key, this is a light, pleasing tale of three generations, marked by ironic twists of fate and finely etched period detail.”

Rescued by a Highlander by Keira MontclairRescued by a Highlander by Keira Montclair. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Madeline MacDonald has been a victim of her stepbrother’s cruelty ever since her parents’ death in a fire two years ago. Forced into a betrothal to a man she hates, her only way out is to escape to a convent.

Laird Alexander Grant is honor bound to rescue Maddie after seeing the bruises on her face. What he doesn’t realize is that once he holds the beaten lass in his arms, his heart will never be the same. He vows revenge for the abuse she was forced to endure and yearns to make the sweet woman with an iron will his, but can he help her fight the demons in her mind left behind by her abusers’ horrid treatment?

A major knock on this book is that it takes the hero a long time to realize that he loves the heroine. The reviews reminded me of the old 80s historicals where the hero thought he hated the heroine for 90% of the book. (Stephanie Laurens really transformed the genre with her hero in pursuit stories, imo)

@library addict: I got tripped up by that the other day, thinking I was getting a free 18-page short story. I don’t begrudge the author the 99 cents, but I do think both Amazon and I need to be a little more careful.

Carolyn Jewel’s LORD RUIN is 99 cents at the moment. It’s a fantastic read, esp at that price.

@Beth: Rosetta was having a 14 Days of Romance special from February 1 through today. Each day had one romance that was free for only that day. The last three have been Barbara Taylor Bradford books.

Just reading the name Barbara Taylor Bradford brings back happy memories of the 80’s and all of the mini-series on TV.
