The Silence of the Lambs Thomas HarrisThe Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris. $ 1.99 at AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

The twenty-fifth anniversary edition of the #1 New York Times bestselling classic, now with a note by author Thomas Harris revealing his inspiration for Hannibal Lecter.

A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname—Buffalo Bill—is stalking particular women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the F.B.I. Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, Chief of the Bureau’s Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and grisly killer now kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Lecter’s insight into the minds of murderers could help track and capture Buffalo Bill.

Smart and attractive, Starling is shaken to find herself in a strange, intense relationship with the acutely perceptive Lecter. His cryptic clues—about Buffalo Bill and about her—launch Clarice on a search that every reader will find startling, harrowing, and totally compelling.

An ingenious, masterfully written novel, The Silence of the Lambs is a classic of suspense and storytelling.

John Dies at the End by David WongJohn Dies at the End by David Wong. $ 1.99 at AMZN | Apple

    From the Jacket Copy:

    NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

    STOP.

You should not have touched this book with your bare hands.

NO, don’t put it down. It’s too late.

    They’re watching you.

My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours.

You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye.

The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

    The important thing is this:

The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension.

John and I never had the chance to say no.

    You still do.

Unfortunately for us, if you make the right choice, we’ll have a much harder time explaining how to fight off the otherworldly invasion currently threatening to enslave humanity.

I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind:

None of this is was my fault.

PW ” A multidimensional plot unfolds as the unlikely heroes drink lots of beer and battle the paradoxes of time and space, as well as the clichés of first-person-shooter video games and fantasy gore films. Sure to please the Fangoria set while appealing to a wider audience, the book’s smart take on fear manages to tap into readers’ existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next.”

Actually the reviews are pretty positive.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson LevineElla Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. $ 1.99

    From the Jacket Copy:

How can a fairy’s blessing be such a curse?

At her birth, Ella of Frell was given a foolish fairy’s gift—the “gift” of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it’s hopping on one foot for a day or chopping off her own head!

But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. She goes on a quest, encountering ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, fairy godmothers, and handsome princes, determined to break the curse—and live happily ever after.

In this novel based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the childhood curse that forces her to obey any order given to her.

Read this with the tot. We enjoyed it quite a bit. Very girl positive.

Beautiful Bastard by Christina LaurenBeautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren. $ 1.99.

    From the Jacket Copy:

An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.
Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He’s exacting, blunt, inconsiderate—and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative—completely infuriating—creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules—or outright smash them—if it means he can have her. All over the office

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.

Originally only available online as The Office by tby789—and garnering over 2 million reads on fanfiction sites—Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release.

I read this book. I don’t think I did a review. It’s basically fighting and fucking and apparently was Twilight fan fiction. I guess in this version Bella and Edward have a contentious relationship.

    From the Jacket Copy:

“Lisbeth Salander is one of the most original characters in a thriller to come along in a while.”
    –The New York Times
Stieg Larsson’s trilogy that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has become this generation’s international bestselling phenomenon.
Disgraced crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist has no idea of the levels of conspiracy he will uncover when is enlisted to investigate the unsolved disappearance nearly forty years ago of a Swedish industrialist’s niece. And when the pierced and tattooed computer savant Lisbeth Salander joins him, together they unearth layers and layers of secrets and scandals that permeate the highest levels of society, from politics to finance to the legal system itself–at the bottom of which lies unimaginable cruelty perpetrated on the weak. In the course of these three shocking, unputdownable thrillers, we encounter one of the most heroic of survivors, as she battles some of the most heartless villains ever imagined.

    This is a great deal.

The Road Cormac McCarthyThe Road by Cormac McCarthy. $ 2.99 AMZN | Google

    From the Jacket Copy:

    NATIONAL BESTSELLER

    PULITZER PRIZE WINNER
National Book Critic’s Circle Award Finalist

A New York Times Notable Book
One of the Best Books of the Year
The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, The Denver Post, The Kansas City Star, Los Angeles Times, New York, People, Rocky Mountain News, Time, The Village Voice, The Washington Post

The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Terrible things happen. Some people survive. The book is so long that you may not.

As I recall, one thing I adored about Ella Enchanted, which couldn’t be paralleled in the film version, was that the love interest/relationship had to develop over time, not just springing into tru luv from first sight and hormones. IIRC!

I just wanted to say that I highly, highly recommend I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. It isn’t a romance, but it is an excellent book about a young girl coming into adulthood. It also happens to be beautifully written.

Desiree, by Annemarie Selinko, just became digitized. It’s one of the best novels I’ve ever read, and it’s 1.99 during the Sourcebook sale. I’ve worn out two copies of the DTB.

Actually, The Road is not a very long book at all. Everyone (mainly my husband) gives me the mouth hanging open stare when I tell them The Road is one of the best books I’ve read in the past few years, but it’s the truth. I could not put it down.

Also a big thumbs up to I Capture the Castle (one of my most prized possessions is my hardback copy of this book) and Let Me In – wonderful vampire fiction from Scandinavia.

There’s several Georgette Heyer books on sale for $1.99 on kindle.

Also, The Road is 287 pages and 2683 locations according to my kindle so it isn’t very long but maybe it feels that way. I haven’t read it yet to know.

There are 300+ books on sale at Audible if you’d like to listen to a book. Jennifer Estep’s Spider’s Bite, and Ilona Andrews – Gunmetal Magic are two of the sale items. I imagine a lot of people have already read these, but if like me you haven’t, now you can get an audio copy.
