Daily Deals: Chasing things toward fulfillment

somegirlsSome Girls Bite by Chloe Neill. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student’s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker-and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan ‘Lord o’ the Manor? Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries? worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude? and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war-and there will be blood.

Hmmm. New Adult paranormal? I know that Angela James really loved this series but something happened in book 5 of the series. I think the situation was resolved in a later book, however.

Let Me Be The One: The Sullivans, Book 6 (Contemporary Romance) by Bella AndreLet Me Be The One by Bella Andre. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

In LET ME BE THE ONE, the brand-new book in Bella Andre’s New York Times and USA Today bestselling series about the Sullivan family, an unexpected friends-to-lovers romance might not only turn out to be so much hotter than anything bad boy pro baseball player Ryan Sullivan has ever known…but much, much sweeter, too.

When Vicki Bennett saved Ryan Sullivan’s life as a teenager, it was the beginning of a close friendship that never wavered despite her failed marriage to someone else and Ryan’s well-earned reputation as a ladies man. So when she suddenly needs a pretend boyfriend to protect herself and her career from a powerful man’s advances, he is the only person she can imagine asking.

Ryan will do anything to protect Vicki from harm, but when their “fake” kisses and caresses lead to an incredibly sensual night that neither of them can resist, will he have made the biggest mistake of all by irreparably jeopardizing their friendship? Or is it possible that what they’ve both been looking for has been right there the whole time…and the perfect combination of wicked and sweet, friendship and love, is finally within reach?

I don’t think this one was on sale at 99c before or not. The previous five were at one time.

Chasing Darkness (A Taut Psychological Thriller) by Danielle GirardChasing Darkness by Danielle Girard. $ Free at Amazon and BN

From the Jacket Copy:

The most dangerous place to hide is in the dark…

A tough special-agent with the Department of Justice, and a dedicated single mother to her orphaned nephews, Samantha Chase is unbreakable. Until two women, both from the shadows of Sam’s past, are discovered strangled. For Sam, the most unnerving detail is the eucalyptus branch tucked behind the victims’ ears—the signature of a notorious serial murder already convicted and executed for his crimes.

To detective Nick Thomas, the only link to the copycat killings is Sam herself. And when she becomes the target of threats—each one more menacing than the last—his feelings for her just might jeopardize the case. But to understand the killer’s twisted motive is to explore Sam’s past—and a crime she’s spent a lifetime trying to bury…

This book was originally published by Onyx back in 2002. PW reviewed it and wrote ” Girard maintains the novel’s swift pacing and high tension, but a too perfect denouement detracts from the stark, realistic canvas she has created. Still, this is a compelling thriller and a skillful treatment of a difficult topic. “

Chasing Perfect Susan MalleryChasing Perfect by Susan Mallery. $ 1.99 at Amazon and Google Play.

From the Jacket Copy:

Welcome to Fool’s Gold, California, a charming community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. There’s lots to do and plenty of people to meet, especially women. Because there’s just one tiny problem in Fool’s Gold: the men don’t seem to stick around. Maybe it’s the lure of big-city life, or maybe it’s plain old bad luck, but regardless of the reason, the problem has to be fixed, fast. And Charity Jones may be just the city planner to do it.

Charity’s nomadic childhood has left her itching to settle down, and she immediately falls in love with all the storybook town has to offer—everything, that is, except its sexiest and most famous resident, former world-class cyclist Josh Golden. With her long list of romantic disasters, she’s not about to take a chance on another bad boy, even if everyone else thinks he’s perfect just the way he is. But maybe that’s just what he needs—someone who knows the value of his flaws. Someone who knows that he’s just chasing perfect.

I enjoyed this book and reviewed it here. Despite the problems I had with Charity, the story was an easy read.   Josh was charming with a somewhat simplistic story arc.   The matriarchs of Fool’s Gold were both smart and comical.   I thought for the most part the story was a very pro feminine one but I would have liked the insides of the cake to have matched the outer frosting.   It would have made for a more palatable desert.

Jane – I think that asking Janet to review a few of her favorite titles by LaVyrle Spencer is a great idea. Spencer wrote some wonderful books and I would hate to see her fly under the radar of a new generation of romance readers! She is truly a one of kind author in my opinion!

I read Spencer’s Morning Glory a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. Maybe The Fulfillment is better than it sounds?

@LeeF: I’ve always felt ambivalent about the premise of The Fulfillment, but generally like it better than Morning Glory. I know a lot of Spencer fans love that book but I didn’t care for it. Other Spencer books that I’d recommend: Vows, The Gamble, and Hummingbird.

The Fulfillment is NOT Spencer’s best. In fact, I was kinda creeped out by it when I first read it. Morning Glory, The Gamble, and Then Came Heaven are my favorite Spencers. In fact, The Gamble is still one of my all-time favorite romances.
