Daily Deals: Box sets and a special DA offer

Romance Bundle image_hires

Diversion Books is a small digital press started by agent Scott Waxman. It is somewhat focused on bringing its clients’ backlists from print into digital. They contacted me last week to see if I wanted to partner with them to sell books. The idea is that they would allow me to pick from a list of deals they would be willing to run. The kicker is that you, the reader, have to buy them through the Diversion Books website. The benefit is that you get a DRM free digital book in the format you prefer and DA gets a small cut.I thought we could try out this partnership for a few weeks or a month or whatnot. Let me know what you think.

I choose this selection because I’d been talking to Sarah and our Friday podcast guest (FBI analyst, Miss L) about our love for Regency titles. It’s a bundle of four books for $5.00.

Love Thy Neighbor by Mark GilleoLove Thy Neighbor by Mark Gilleo. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Clark Hayden is a graduate student trying to help his mother navigate through the loss of his father while she continues to live in their house near Washington DC. With his mother’s diminishing mental capacity becoming the norm, Clark expects a certain amount of craziness as he heads home for the holidays. What he couldn’t possibly anticipate, though, is that he would find himself catapulted into the middle of the terrorist operation. As the holiday festivities reach a crescendo, a terrorist cell – which happens to be across the street – is activated. Suddenly Clark is discovering things he never knew about deadly chemicals, secret government operations, suspiciously missing neighbors, and the intentions of a gorgeous IRS auditor. Clark’s quiet suburban neighborhood is about to become one of the most deadly places on the planet, and it’s up to Clark to prevent the loss of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives in the nation’s capital.

I was initially reluctant to share this book because it contains a story about a terrorist cell and has a woman in a hijab on the front. Nothing like stoking the anti Muslim sentiment through popular fiction. It’s a 9/11 novel based on the true story of the woman who reported that she saw suspicious activity involving Middle Eastern men across the street. People found it very gripping and it was inspired by true events so I included it with the obvious caveat that simply because a group of non whites are congregating doesn’t mean anything negative is going to arise out of that.

Matchbox Girls by Chrysoula TzavelasMatchbox Girls by Chrysoula Tzavelas. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Marley Claviger is just trying to get her life together. Stumbling into an ancient conflict between celestial forces is going to make that a whole lot harder…

When Marley wakes up to a phone call from a pair of terrified children, she doesn’t expect to be pulled into a secret war. She rescues them from an empty house and promises to find their missing uncle. She even manages to feed them dinner. But she barely feels competent to manage her own life, let alone care for small children with strange, ominous powers…

And when a mysterious angelic figure shows up and tries to claim the girls, it all falls apart…

Plagued by visions of disaster, Marley has no idea what she’s gotten herself into, but she knows one thing: magical or not, the kids need her.

The author sent this deal to me. (Thanks author!) IT was hard for me to tell whether this was an adult book or a middle grade book or what. PW writes “The opening chapters have a lot of promise; Marley is an engaging character with enjoyably strong female friendships, and as the otherworldly beings gather around her, the mood is intriguingly menacing. But eventually the narrative starts to drag under the weight of Tzavelas’s (Nightlights: Disintegration) increasingly complicated mythology of angels and the Hush that keeps them from interfering with humans, the faeries and their own agendas, the Geometries of heaven, angelic and demon curses, kaiju, nephilim, and too much more.”

I believe it is an adult book.

Men of Smithfield: Mark and Tony by L.B. Gregg
Coming home from work to find my boyfriend banging our landlord was bad enough. Discovering he had also cleaned out my bank accounts made it officially the worst day of my life. I think I can be forgiven for wanting revenge. Fortunately, the law is on my side in the form of sexy trooper Tony Gervase. He’s always said he isn’t interested in me in that way, but the hot encounter in his kitchen just now tells me he’s changed his mind?

Bending the Iron by Libby Drew
Michael feels trapped by having to keep his sexuality hidden, by his dead-end job, by family obligations. But everything changes when he meets Eric, a passionate museum curator. When Michael’s curiosity gives way to intense attraction, Eric happily feels the same. But the truth is, Eric knows exactly what it is to be stuck in a bad situation, and his personal demons may ultimately hurt his connection with Michael.

First Time, Forever by KC Burn
Derrick and Trevor used to have an incredibly passionate relationship. Now that their son is off to college, they’re working to put vanilla sex behind them—until Trevor begins to notice their age difference. When he chooses to keep his health issues and gray hairs down there to himself, Derrick assumes Trevor is having an affair. Though nothing could be further from the truth, how can Trevor prove he’s desperate to reconnect with Derrick?

This is one of the ledes that aren’t just publicity fluff. Josh Lanyon et al are the hottest authors in gay romantic fiction and for an inquiring m/m reader, this is a great collection to purchase particularly at the low price.

Re: Matchbox Girls: It is a book about women in their twenties, so technically it is adult fiction. The third book (coming soon) is about a 17 year old and is YA. So, you know. Broadly accessible, as they say. I should have been clearer, though…

I’ve only read one of the stories in the m/m box set – Icecapades by Josh Lanyon. I liked it, but it’s not my favorite Lanyon. The Men of Smithfield has been on my wish list for awhile, so I’ll probably get the set. Hard to resist the price.

I like the idea of the Diversion Books deal, I think.

Is it kosher to point out another deal in the comments? Tell me if it’s not and I won’t do it again! But Crimes of Passion is a six-book romantic suspense set for .99 cents right now. I noticed it on sale yesterday. I loved Body of Evidence by Rachel Grant — hard to beat an opening with the heroine in front of a North Korean firing squad — and it also has Jennifer Blake, Toni Anderson, and three other romantic suspense writers. I think it’s a great deal just for Body of Evidence (archaeologist catnip, people – Rachel is a real-life archaeologist like the late Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels … ) To try to avoid being spam filtered, I’ll paste the link in a separate comment.
