Rocky Mountain Heat (Six Pack Ranch Series #1) by Vivian ArendRocky Mountain Heat by Vivian Arend. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Blake Coleman is old enough to know that acting on impulse causes nothing but a heap of trouble. But when trouble’s a western-hat-wearing blonde with slim legs that go on forever, what’s a man to do? Wanting the sweet girl next door is just wrong. The responsible thing to do is keep his hands off.
Jaxi has other plans for Blake’s hands—and his heart. She may have once considered him a big brother, but that was a long time ago. She’s all grown up now and ready to convince him that she’s perfect for him. Except he can’t seem to see past the big “”do not touch”” sign that’s apparently still hanging around her neck.

When Jaxi ends up living right under Blake’s nose, the heat between them slides past simmer and leaps up to barn-burning levels. However, a few of the younger six-pack Colemans have decided that Jaxi’s brand of trouble is worth risking a few busted bones.

That is, if Blake’s finally ready to let go of the reins and fight for what he wants . . .

Barnes & Noble is having a sale featuring the first in many series. There are about 300 books in this sale and the prices are $2.99 and $1.99. Amazon is price matching most. I think I read somewhere that this is a weekend only deal.

Asylum by Madeleine RouxAsylum by Madeleine Roux. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Once you get in, there’s no getting out.

For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, a summer program for gifted students is the chance of a lifetime. No one else at his high school gets his weird fascinations with history and science, but at the New Hampshire College Prep program, such quirks are all but required.

Dan arrives to find that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline dorm—formerly a psychiatric hospital. As Dan and his new friends Abby and Jordan start exploring Brookline’s twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on here . . . secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum’s dark past. Because it turns out Brookline was no ordinary psych ward. And there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.

Featuring haunting found photographs from real asylums, this mind-bending reading experience blurs the lines between past and present, friendship and obsession, genius and insanity.

One reviewer said “Another issue I had is that the author did not do a good job in describing the characters and settings in more detail because I had a difficult time creating those images in my head. I think she relied too heavily on pictures to carry her story scenes.
The plot was really good and the premise of the story was a great idea! I think the author did not have a good flow in the story though because some scenes felt rushed or not completely developed.”

She's the One by Erin NicholasShe’s the One by Erin Nicholas. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Sometimes you see love clearly. And sometimes it has to smack you in the face.

Counting on Love, Book 1

When a stranger walks up and punches him, Ryan Kaye assumes there’s a good reason. But he’s stunned to learn it’s over a one-night stand that never happened —with his friend’s sister, straight-laced Amanda Dixon. When Ryan confronts her about the lie, Amanda apologizes, but Ryan realizes he doesn’t want her to be sorry…he wants the night they supposedly spent together.

Amanda’s not looking to add anyone to her long list of commitments, so she was only trying to let a nice guy down easy by telling him a fling with Ryan broke her heart. So what if the fling only happened in her dreams? But when Ryan Kaye tempts her with the chance to go crazy and fulfill a few fantasies, she can’t resist. Thank goodness one night isn’t enough time to fall in love…

Warning: Contains a hot paramedic who knows how to get a girl to let her hair down, a girl who thinks she prefers her hair up, some naughty laser tag, some naughty role-playing and a lot of falling in love.

Harlequin Junkie gave it 3.5 stars “On a positive note, the sex scenes are hot and left me panting; there is nothing like reading an Erin Nicholas love scene. I especially enjoyed the wittiness and banter of Amanda’s sister Emma. Although She’s the One was not my cup of tea, I plan on reading the next book in the series because I would like to know more about Amanda’s three sisters, and the next book focuses on Amanda’s sister Isabelle.”

Riding the Storm by Sydney CroftRiding the Storm by Sydney Croft. $ 1.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Sydney Croft’s Taken by Fire.

A storm’s rage. A woman’s desire.

A man with the power to set them both free.

He can summon lightning at will. Emerge unscathed from the center of a tornado. Strip a woman down to her barest defenses through the sheer force of his sexuality. He’ s gorgeous, dangerous, and the target of parameteorologist Haley Holmes’s latest mission. Haley has been dispatched to the Louisiana bayous to investigate the phenomenon known as Remy Begnaud–a man with a gift he never wanted: the ability to control a storm’s fury. But even a woman trained in bizarre weather phenomena has no defense against the electrifying power of the ex—Navy SEAL…a power his enemies would kill to control.

With her agency monitoring their every move, Haley’s job is to seduce Remy, gain his trust–and help him harness his extraordinary gift. But who will protect her from this voracious lover who’s introducing her to a new world of erotic thrills—a man who grows increasingly insatiable with each new weather event? Haley knows a big storm is approaching—and with it will come unexpected delights. But so, too, will the storm unleash her greatest fears: an enemy bent on destroying Remy. And her worst fear of all—falling in love with this magnificent man, then having to betray him.

This read a little like X-Men fan fiction so if you like that sort of thing then the story would probably be right up your alley. This is the writing team of Larissa Ione and Stephanie Tyler.

Jane Litte is the founder of Dear Author, a lawyer, and a lover of pencil skirts. She self publishes NA and contemporaries (and publishes with Berkley and Montlake) and spends her downtime reading romances and writing about them. The BN mystery/police procedural selection is pretty good. Recommendations would include:

    Barry Maitland, THE MARX SISTERS
Dennis Lehane, A DRINK BEFORE THE WAR
Charles Todd, A TEST OF WILLS
    Stephen Todd, BLACK DOG
    Jerome Charyn, BLUE EYES
    Jane Casey, THE BURNING
    Lynda La Plante, PRIME SUSPECT
    Laura Lippman, BALTIMORE BLUES
Michael Malone, TIME’S WITNESS (technically the first is UNCIVIL SEASONS, different narrator)
Ben H. Winters, THE LAST POLICEMAN

Some first books aren’t the author’s best, which is pretty typical, but it’s a relatively inexpensive way to shake hands with a new series if your library doesn’t have them.

I’m hoping Amazon will meet these prices because the annoyances involved in buying from BN just don’t stop.

I love Vivan Arend’s books and this is a great introduction to her writing, although I like her paranormals better. Likely because I generally prefer something other than contemporaries, but hers are sweet and sexy and I really enjoy them!

Asylum, on the other hand, I really did not enjoy at all. I thought the idea was interesting but the execution was not enjoyable, it was awfully lukewarm for a YA/Horror, and there is no real ending. It just sort of stops without ever wrapping up what was going on, so there is zero resolution to all the questions the book raises.

Cleo, thanks for the heads-up; I’ve only read the House of Rohan series and really like them.

Unfortunately B&N won’t let me buy anything from their store because they know I’m Cdn from my IP address. Hopefully Amazon or Kobo might match some of these sales.

@Christine E: Many (at least many I looked at) of the B&N sale titles are on sale at most sellers since they are publisher price reductions (some have been on sale all month) and not a sale put on strictly by B&N. They’re just being smart in marketing them all as a sale and putting some additional titles on sale to fill things out. That said you may not be able to get the sale prices at any of the sellers if they are region restricted sales.
