But neither can get the other out of their head. Their undeniable chemistry is off the charts.

The 500: A Novel by Matthew QuirkThe 500 by Matthew Quirk. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

A gripping thriller debut, set deep in the heart of the world’s most powerful political arena.

A year ago, fresh out of Harvard Law School, Mike Ford landed his dream job at the Davies Group, Washington’s most powerful consulting firm. Now, he’s staring down the barrel of a gun, pursued by two of the world’s most dangerous men. To get out, he’ll have to do all the things he thought he’d never do again: lie, cheat, steal-and this time, maybe even kill.

Mike grew up in a world of small-stakes con men, learning lessons at his father’s knee. His hard-won success in college and law school was his ticket out. As the Davies Group’s rising star, he rubs shoulders with “The 500,” the elite men and women who really run Washington — and the world. But peddling influence, he soon learns, is familiar work: even with a pedigree, a con is still a con.

Combining the best elements of political intrigue and heart-stopping action, THE 500 is an explosive debut, one that calls to mind classic thrillers like The Firm and Presumed Innocent. In Mike Ford, readers will discover a new hero who learns that the higher the climb, the harder — and deadlier — the fall.

Winner of the 2013 Thriller Award for Best First Novel

The top rated review says that this is a poorly executed Grisham rip-off.

The Life of Elizabeth I Alison WeirThe Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Perhaps the most influential sovereign England has ever known, Queen Elizabeth I remained an extremely private person throughout her reign, keeping her own counsel and sharing secrets with no one–not even her closest, most trusted advisers. Now, in this brilliantly researched, fascinating new book, acclaimed biographer Alison Weir shares provocative new interpretations and fresh insights on this enigmatic figure.

Against a lavish backdrop of pageantry and passion, intrigue and war, Weir dispels the myths surrounding Elizabeth I and examines the contradictions of her character. Elizabeth I loved the Earl of Leicester, but did she conspire to murder his wife? She called herself the Virgin Queen, but how chaste was she through dozens of liaisons? She never married–was her choice to remain single tied to the chilling fate of her mother, Anne Boleyn? An enthralling epic that is also an amazingly intimate portrait, The Life of Elizabeth I is a mesmerizing, stunning reading experience.

I also concur with other reviewers that it seems to read more like a gossip column than a biography. Much of the book revolves around her emotional relationships with Robert Dudley, Duke of Leicester, and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, while glossing over their involvement in some of the major events of her reign.” per this review

Deeper by Robin YorkDeeper by Robin York. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

In Robin York’s sizzling debut, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

Ends in a cliffhanger.

Holy cow! Alison Weir for $.99? Sold.

Deeper is on sale from May 12 to May 23. I don’t know if the author’s other $0.99 book — Ride with Me — is also on sale for the same period of time.

I didn’t think of Deeper as ending in a cliffhanger, i.e. it didn’t cut off annoyingly or leave me feeling like I immediately must know what happens next. Rather, I felt satisfied because it wrapped up Caroline’s journey. I think the sequel shifts focus to West.

@Justine: I’m pretty sure the author said the sequel will have an HEA for the couple.

@Justine: Agreed. There’s definitely more story to be told, but the action in Deeper came to a reasonable end without me feeling as though the story was being stretched out in order to sell more books.
