Green Rider (Green Rider Series #1) by Kristen BritainGreen Rider by Kristen Britain. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

On her long journey home from school after a fight which will surely lead to her expulsion, Karigan G’ladheon ponders her future as she trudges through the immense forest called Green Cloak. But her thoughts are interrupted by a galloping horse bursting from the woods, its rider impaled by two black-shafted arrows.

As the young man lies dying on the road, he tells Karigan he is a Green Rider, one of the legendary messengers of King Zachary. Before he dies, he makes Karigan swear to deliver the “life and death” message he’s carrying and to complete his mission “for love of her country.” The man gives her his green coat, with the symbolic brooch of his office, bestowing upon Karigan the title of Green Rider and changing her life forever. Caught up in a world of deadly danger and complex magic, compelled by forces she cannot understand, Karigan is hounded by dark beings bent on seeing that the message, and its reluctant carrier, never reach their destination.

Green Rider is the first installment of the acclaimed Green Rider series.

I’m buying this one! VOYA writes “The characters, including minor ones, are well-developed and the plot is complex enough to get the reader thinking. This is a real page-turner” and Kirkus ” A fresh, well-organized fantasy debut, with a spirited heroine and a reliable supporting cast.” If someone I like dies in it, I might punch something.

Knockout by J.C. ValentineKnockout by J.C. Valentine. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

From the wrong side of the tracks…

Alyson Blake had learned early on that the only one she could depend on was herself. The only light in her life was a boy whom everyone agreed was destined for prison; but with his first kiss, he had set her soul on fire. Since the day the police dragged him away in handcuffs, she had managed to lead a quiet life, but when she attends an event fraught with mayhem, trouble resurfaces.

The one person she can’t forget…

Jamison Weston is the kind of guy dads load their shotguns for; endowed with a hot temper and a rap sheet as long as both tattooed arms. Known as “The Judge,” Jami’s hot temper, lethal fists, and cocky attitude have earned him respect and admiration both in and out of the ring. But just when he thinks he’s pummeled his past to death, Alyson Blake reenters his life.

Two paths collide…

After years of separation, Alyson is eager to reexplore the man who’s never left her thoughts, but for Jamison, she’s both the distraction he wants, but doesn’t need. As the two embark on a relationship that neither of them expected or bargained for, an outside threat closes in. When Alyson crosses the line of professionalism and takes her work home with her, her life is put in danger, leaving Jamison with no choice but to once again step in and become her protector.

Do you think cover models ever look at these covers and say “what’s so wrong with my face?”

Anyway, JC Valentine is the “alter-ego” of Brandi Salazar. I confess to never having heard of either author.

As guardian to his three younger brothers, this can’t go on…they look up to him in every way and all he’s done lately is prove how messed up he really is. Needing a change, he attends a local Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting, where he finds himself tempted by the alluring instructor, McKenna.

Twenty-one year old McKenna is trying to make amends. After losing her parents in a horrific accident, she knows if she can just be good enough, maybe she can forgive herself for what happened. With her newly acquired degree in counseling, she begins leading a sex addicts group where she meets the troubled Knox and her life takes on complications she never bargained for. She doesn’t have time for a bad boy who only wants to take her to bed, even if her body disagrees. The fixer in her wants to help, but trusting Knox’s true motivations might take more courage than she has.

When I Break is book 1 in a new series by New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan. When I Surrender, book 2, will be available April 7, 2014. Please note this is not a standalone, as the story continues in book 2.

Note the warning. No, not the top one but the bottom one which points out that this is the first book in a duology. I’ve read a couple of Ryan books and liked them even though I found the premise of some of the stories a bit thin.

I loved Green Rider and the two subsequent books in the series that I have read. I lost track of it after that, but will definitely try to catch at up at some point in the near future (so many books, so little time).

If you like trad fantasy, GREEN RIDER is a steal at that price.

I’ve never heard of Valentine / Salazar either, but I considered making a drinking game out of that blurb, one drink for every cliche; but then I remembered that I have to drive home.

Just as a heads up, Amazon says Knockout is a duology as well. I am a bit bummed. For 0.99, I was going to try out the book, but I HATE this trend of dragging out books to trilogies or duets. I want one contained story!

Well, I feel like an idiot. The Green Rider book sounded good so i bought it, went to add it to Calibre — and it was already there, purchased in 2012 ::facepalm::

    Must reduce my TBR pile…

@Cassandra B.: Agreed, I usually try to wait until the whole series is out to get it (doesn’t apply to series that have different characters in each book though). I have enough standalones on my TBR list to carry me through several years!!

I suspect the reason Green Rider is discounted is because the sixth in the series, Mirror Sight is out next month. Just enough time to to get hooked, read your way through the series and then tear your hair out because there’s a 3-4 year interval before the next one!

“she’s both the distraction he wants, but doesn’t need.”
Maybe it’s because the blurb is cliché collection, but the gramatical inconsistency of that line bothers me SO much.
Pretty sure “The Green Rider” will make me forget it.
And, BTW, hasn’t anyone built a TBR app yet? Name and author, so that you can check before buying if you have it.

I was told I’d like Green Rider. Now I get to find out, at $1.99. Bought!

I’m usually really good at remembering books (not names, or to-do things, but books, yes), so this was a surprise. Luckily, Amazon refunded it as I hit the return button a minute after buying it. And my library had ebooks 2 and 4 in the series available which was nice.

@Maite: that’s what I use Goodreads for. These days I don’t buy a book without checking my catalogue there first.
