PLAY HARD: Three sexy sports romances that bring the heat!

FASTBALL, by V.K. Sykes: Book one in the USA Today Bestselling series, The Philadelphia Patriots

Baseball reporter Maddie Leclair has spent years chasing her dream job–covering the Philadelphia Patriots major league baseball team. But in order to make it to the top tier of sports reporting, she needs to score an interview with the most private and elusive athlete in baseball, Patriots’ superstar Jake Miller.

On the rebound from a devastating injury, the last thing Jake needs is a pushy female reporter distracting him. But one look at Maddie and he finds himself trying for a different kind of play, one that involves bedrooms and not baseball stats. Sleeping together could damage both their careers, and Maddie is all about saying no. But when it comes to the game of love, Jake is playing to win.

OFFSIDE, by Juliana Stone: Book one in The Barker Triplets trilogy (Including new, bonus material) When hockey phenom Billie-Jo Barker returns home and decides to play in the local Friday night hockey league, all hell breaks loose. Not because Billie’s talent is in question, but because Billie is a woman. And though these are modern times, some of the local guys still have a problem letting a girl into their ‘men’s club.’

Soon, Billie is at the center of a small town battle of the sexes, with everyone choosing sides. Her sisters. The townsfolk. Her friends. And yet, the only person whose opinion she cares about doesn’t seem to care much at all. Logan Forest, the man who broke her heart when she was eighteen and the man she now shares the bench with every Friday night.

She’s got a lot to prove and though Billie Jo Barker scores on the ice, will this girl ever score with the man of her dreams?

THE PROPOSITION, by Jennifer Lyon: The Proposition is book one of three in The Plus One Chronicles Trilogy.

Rich, sexy and volatile, Sloane Michaels has a dark agenda that keeps his heart on ice. His extreme wealth gives him the control he craves and his skills as an ex UFC fighter the tools he’ll need to extract his ultimate revenge. But when the woman he never believed he’d see again crosses his path, Sloane is caught between the vengeance he needs and a sexual conquest he craves.

Kat Thayne has been in survival mode for six years, hiding behind the sweet creations for her bakery. But when a random carjacking brings her face-to-face with her darkest fears and hottest fantasy, Kat is forced out of hiding and offered a dangerously passionate proposition. One she knows she isn’t strong enough to refuse.

Several authors are banding together to form coops for the express purpose of creating these boxed sets. I guess the idea is two fold. First, the low price and the combination of authors is really appealing to readers and the “book” is driven up the charts to allow authors to claim bestsellerdom on future books and promotional pieces. Second, it is designed to introduce new authors to readers. Today, I’ve included four box sets featuring different authors.

Marriage of Convenience Boxed Set (Favorite Romance Themes) Judith Arnold, Patricia Ryan, Patricia McLinn, Cynthia WrightMarriage of Convenience by Judith Arnold. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Favorite Romance Themes™: MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE is a boxed set of four complete novels from some of today’s most exciting authors — at an irresistible price! Just 99c for a limited time!

It’s perhaps the most beloved, classic romance theme of all: a couple who marry not for love, but because of a business contract, an arrangement between families, or the order of a king. They start their married life as strangers… then sparks fly, love catches them by surprise, and their arrangement becomes much more. This boxed set features four full-length “marriage of convenience” romance novels:

Cry Uncle by USA Today bestselling author Judith Arnold
With a hit man after her, Seattle architect Pamela Hayes runs as far as she can: to steamy Key West. Local bar owner Jonas Brenner will lose custody of his orphaned five-year-old niece unless he can convince a judge he’s a responsible father. What he needs is a wife to persuade the court his niece is living in a stable environment. What Pam needs is a new identity. Joe offers her a deal: if she marries him and takes his name, no hit man is going to find her. In return, she can pose as Joe’s wife, dutifully caring for his wild-child niece. A marriage in name only—no sex, no emotions, no love. Which, once Pam and Joe move in together and the sparks begin to fly, is easier said than done.

Falcon’s Fire by Rita Award Winner Patricia Ryan
Martine of Rouen resolves never to fall in love after her mother drowns herself in despair over a broken heart, but for her brother’s sake she allows herself to be betrothed, sight unseen, to Edmond of Harford. The union has been negotiated by lowborn knight Thorne Falconer in exchange for the estate he covets more than anything–certainly more than love. Thorne never suspected he’d have to protect Martine from abuse at the hands of the brutish Edmond and his vicious brother, but he does, in the only way he can–by marrying her himself.

A New World by USA Today bestselling author Patricia McLinn
When his Irish eyes are smiling, she’s in danger of losing her head … and her heart. Eleanor refuses to be charmed by the Irish balladeer she hires to strum up business for her Cape Ann restaurant in Massachusetts. Yes, she feels his spell, but bitter reality has taught her that dreamers drift on, leaving heartache. Cahill finds the woman he wants to share his future with in strong-minded, too-practical-for-her-own-good Eleanor, but he must convince her … and time is running out.

Of One Heart by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cynthia Wright
When the reckless Marquess of Sandhurst is forced by King Henry VIII into an arranged marriage with a young French widow, he conceives a bold masquerade to outwit the king. Disguised as a humble portrait painter, Sandhurst travels to the French court to have a look at his would-be bride. In this magical novel of love and renewal, Cynthia Wright illuminates the world of Tudor England and Renaissance France.

Jane Litte is the founder of Dear Author, a lawyer, and a lover of pencil skirts. She self publishes NA and contemporaries (and publishes with Berkley and Montlake) and spends her downtime reading romances and writing about them. I haven’t actually read any of these authors and at this price I want to give one of these box sets a try. Anybody have any suggestions on which one might be the most likely to contain C+ to A range books? Really don’t want to purchase a bunch of DNFs (it’s the waste of time, not the $).

@CG – I would think the Patricia Rice / Kathryn Shay collection might be your best bet.

BTW, I saw the other day that Ava March’s Brook Street trilogy is available as a boxed set for a reduced price. And some of her other stories (that I haven’t read) are free.

I’d love to know about the business side of these boxed sets. Who divvies up the money? Do they have a contract? Are they working as a joint venture?

Do you think you could get someone to do an article or a case study on this, Jane? (Fully understanding that I may be the only person nerdy enough to be interested…)

Edited to add: I’d also be interested in hearing if they found it worked and drove sales.

I don’t see a lot of romances set in New Jersey so was considering the Bodyguards set. I looked up that author on goodreads and saw that book is actually a Harlequin Temptation from 1995. The lead book is a (self published I think) ebook from 2011. So maybe these are books that the authors already wrote and sold once and now have the rights to sell again? I’m not sure how I feel about that, I’d have to be careful that I didn’t already read one or that I don’t buy something really dated without knowing (the description doesn’t say whether there are rewrites or it is the same as original).
