Inside Out Girl: A Novel by Tish CohenInside Out Girl by Tish Cohen. $ Free at Amazon | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

Rachel Berman wants everything to be perfect. An overprotective single mother of two, she is acutely aware of the statistical dangers lurking around every corner—which makes her snap decision to aid a stranded motorist wholly uncharacteristic. Len Bean is stuck on the shoulder with Olivia, his relentlessly curious, learning disabled ten-year-old daughter. To the chagrin of Rachel’s children, who are about to be linked to the most-mocked girl in school, Rachel and Len begin dating. And when Len receives terrible news, little Olivia needs a hero more than ever.

But the world refuses to be predictable. When personal crisis profoundly alters Rachel’s relationship with a wild, very special little girl, this perfectionist mother finds herself drawn into a mystery from her past and toward a new appreciation for her own children’s imperfect lives.

School Library Journal says it is a romance novel not to be missed, but the description of everything that happens in the book does seem a little soap operatic as PW notes.  “Regret, rejection and worry abound as the plot touches on the standard societal/familial issues (divorce, teenage sexuality, adoption), and Rachel fights to create her own legacy at work. Cohen’s language is pleasant and the characters relatable, but the plot is so obvious that the narrative feels like a quirky soap opera. “

The Young Lions by Irwin ShawThe Young Lions by Irwin Shaw. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Irwin Shaw’s classic novel stands among the best fictional depictions of World War II

Told from the points of view of one German and two very different Americans, this sweeping fresco brings home the reality of the most important historical event between the Great Depression and September 11, 2001: the Second World War.

Considered by critics to be one of the most lucid visions of war in American fiction, The Young Lions remains a benchmark of twentieth-century war literature. It was made into the famous film starring Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, and Dean Martin.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

The reviews are gushing “It is almost as if a De Maggio had cast aside his center fielder’s glove one afternoon, turned up that night at Madison Square Garden, and knocked out Joe Louis in the first round. Irwin Shaw’s novel is that impressive.” — (New York Herald Tribune Weekly Book Review )

2940148794776_p0_v1_s260x420Unbreakable by Rebecca Shaw. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

*This book contains mature subject matter and is not intended for those under 18 years of age.*

Jessica Harper is the epitome of perfection. She’s a good daughter, makes excellent grades, and always strays on the safe side of life. The last thing she thought would ever happen was falling in love with her best friend’s brother. But sometimes fate just has a way of bringing two people together.

Wide receiver for the University of Arizona, Gabe Garcia, seems to have it all. When his feelings for Jessica come to surface, Gabe will give up everything to be with her.

But what happens when a tragedy abruptly changes the course of your life? For Jessica and Gabe, everything they thought they knew about each other will be questioned. Sometimes, there are scars in life that are cut too deep to completely heal.

Will their love prove to be unbreakable, or will it shatter and prove fate is just another lie?

Sounds like something tragic happens to Jess but I couldn’t figure it out from the few reviews I read so I don’t know if it is rape or something that might be a trigger. The negative reviews indicate that there are numerous editing errors such as the use of too for to and the use of apostrophes for plural words. The book says it is edited so I’m not sure if the reviews pre date an edit.

A reader emailed me and told me what the tragedy is so I’m inserting a warning here.

Spoiler (spoiler): Show

heroine is assaulted and raped.

Is Inside Out Girl a romance though? Because that blurb reads to me like the love interest is going to die. That’s a no go zone for me. *runs away*

    I bought Unbreakable though.
