Coming Home (Chesapeake Diaries Series #1) by Mariah StewartComing Home by Mariah Stewart. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

New York Times bestselling author Mariah Stewart presents a captivating contemporary romance novel in the tradition of Robyn Carr, Susan Mallery, and Barbara Freethy.

In the wake of his wife’s murder, agent Grady Shields turned his back on the FBI—and everything else—to retreat into the vast solitude of Montana, grieve for his lost love, and forget the world. But after years in seclusion, his sister’s wedding draws him to St. Dennis, a peaceful town on the Chesapeake Bay. Though he swears he isn’t interested in finding love again, Grady can’t ignore the mutual sparks that fly when he meets Vanessa Keaton.

Although her past was marked by bad choices, Vanessa has found that coming to St. Dennis is the best decision she’s ever made. Bling, her trendy boutique, is a success with tourists as well as with the townspeople. She’s made friends, has a home she loves, and has established a life for herself far from the nightmare she left behind. The last thing she’s looking for is romance, but the hot new man in town is hard to resist. And when Vanessa’s past catches up with her, Grady finds that he’s unwilling to let her become a victim again. As together they fight her demons, Grady and Vanessa discover that life still holds some surprises and that love doesn’t always have to hurt.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Mariah Stewart’s Long Way Home.

The also likes are pretty spot on. If you like Robyn Carr, Susan Mallery, and Barbara Freethy then you’ll probably enjoy this story.

The Day Kennedy Was Shot by Jim BishopThe Day Kennedy Was Shot by Jim Bishop. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Jim Bishop’s trademark suspenseful, hour-by-hour storytelling style drives this account of an unforgettable day in American history. Culled from interviews with more than three hundred individuals, his retelling tracks all the major and minor characters of that day—JFK, Oswald, Ruby, LBJ, Jackie, and others—illuminating a human drama that many readers believe they know well. At once moving and terrifying, and filled with vivid detail, it delivers the haunting feeling of being there as the day’s events unfolded in both Dallas and Washington.

As gripping as fiction but with a journalist’s exacting detail, The Day Kennedy Was Shot captures the action, mystery, and drama that unfolded on November 22, 1963.

The negative review says this is basically sensationalized fiction.

Proper Scoundrel (Knave of Hearts) by Annette BlairProper Scoundrel by Annette Blair. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

PROPER SCOUNDREL (Formerly: Scoundrel in Disguise) Knave of Hearts, Two of Four

Lust muddies a high-stakes battle only one can win. Marcus adores Jade the minute he sees her; she despises him as fast. Jade Smithfield’s late grandmother unwittingly sold a land option to the railroad before she died. Nevertheless, to keep a family secret and save the downtrodden women in her care, Jade is determined to stop the South Downs Railroad from laying track on her property. To save his disabled brother’s railroad, and the families who will lose their living without it, Marcus Fitzalan applies for a job with Jade to conceal his investigation into the railroad accidents halting construction. While Jade wreaks havoc on the railroad, and leads Marcus a merry chase, her new man of affairs teaches her a lesson contrary to everything she has learned since birth: Not all men are created equal—some of them are good.

One reviewer was bugged by the hero trying to take the heroine’s virginity without intending to offer her marriage. I don’t like this kind of storyline either but the other reviews are fairly positive.

So I don’t know if this is original content or what but I think it’s one of the more intriguing box sets because all the stories are connected to each other.

I read the headline too fast and thought it said “a cozy assassination” and *had* to click — after all, that’s something new! Imagine my disappointment…

(Although if someone shares my peculiar tastes, DO try to get your hands on the “Miss Melville” series by Evelyn Smith, starting with MISS MELVILLE REGRETS. And if anyone knows of any other cozy assassin titles, I’d love to hear of them!)

I believe the Midnight Ink box set is all original, and I absolutely love Jayne Rylon — really fun, sexy stories with a whole lot of respect and caring. She writes a lot of bisexual characters and is one of the few authors I’ve found who consistently writes sexuality more on a sliding scale than in strictly defined terms, which I really appreciate.

@Sunny: Ooh, I’m intrigued by your description of Jayne Rylon. Can you recommend a good book (or two) as an introduction? I generally prefer pairs to menages – it looks like she writes both.

    @cleo:
She does a fair bit of menage but it tends to focus on a couple’s development through the story on their own as well as within the group of friends. For couples, I really liked Pick Your Pleasure 1 and 2, they’re really good examples of her writing. I was a little worried I wouldn’t like the choose-your-own-adventure format but it absolutely works. Her Cougar Challenge books are also lots of fun and are only couples.
