June Ebook Contest

Dear Readers and Authors:

Edited to add: We often get offers of free books related to this contest but we decided in last month’s contest that we would buy all the books we chose so we could remain objective. We have no problem in receiving books from publishers but at this time feel uncomfortable receiving books from authors.

We are opening up the June ebook contest which was inspired by Cece. This contest asks for you, readers and authors, to nominate books to be reviewed. Jayne and I will pick a number of books (probably around 4 each) to read and review. As seen by the previous contest, not all books are going to get good grades. We hope that doesn’t scare you all away. Of course, if you really hate an author, you may want to nominate them in hopes that we send them a Dear Ja(y)ne letter.

One hint on the nominating process. If you see alot of one type of book being nominated: i.e., paranormals, you are probably going to have a better chance of your recommendation being picked up if it is different. Jayne and I both enjoy reading traditional regencies which were almost totally disregarded in the last contest.

If you a reader, spend all the space you need to tell us why we should read the book. Authors, you write for a living. Give us your best three to four sentence sale. You can include links to excerpts, your website, etc. We'll run this contest until May 31. Bring on the recommendations.

Best regards

The Two Ja(y)nes

    I’ll go first, I’m not scared ;)

The Distressing Damsel by Shelly Laurenston –fantasy romance
Leaving Mama by Bobbie Cole (releases next Tuesday)–it’s women’s fiction, not romance, though there are romantic undertones to it

The only historical ebooks I can think of off the top of my head that I loved were Lynne Connolly’s Richard and Rose books, and you’ve already read those ;) I don’t read many historicals, ebook or otherwise.

    May 24, 2006 @ 07:40:11

You mentioned liking sports, so I’ll go ahead and nominate ‘A Grand Passion’ (soccer) or ‘The Argentine Lover’ (polo) by Samantha Winston at Elloras Cave

    May 24, 2006 @ 09:02:04

Well I already said to read Irresistible by Beverly Havlir.

So I throw in Wicked Memories By Maggie Casper, cuz I want to read a review for it. Does that count :).

  6. Karen Scott
    May 24, 2006 @ 09:21:10

Shelby Reed’s A Fine Work of Art/The Fifth Favour – EC contemp
Sarah MCcarty Promises Prevail/Promises Lingers – EC Historical Western

  7. sybil
    May 24, 2006 @ 09:56:43

Oh I second Karens’s. You really need to read at least one of McCarthy’s westerns. Do the first one. Tis grand and I want your opinion.

And reed is great but only read one so far. I have no clue about cece’s but she is pimping it well so it must be good *g*.

So hey that is a good choice since I want a review. LOL yes I think it is all about me.

  8. Keishon
    May 24, 2006 @ 10:06:00

I just finished reading Shelby Reed and I’d love for you guys to read it, so I nominate A Fine Work of Art by Shelby Reed. Also, will be back as there are titles that looked intersting but I wasn’t sure about, will brb.

  9. Jennifer
    May 24, 2006 @ 10:50:23

I loved Shelby’s book so I’ll third this nomination, lol.
And I have to say I nominated my own books above – I thought my ID was Sam here but then noticed it was Jennifer and felt weird about that, lol.

  10. Tilly Greene
    May 24, 2006 @ 11:02:13

Hmmm, I know a wonderful historical author – Jess Michaels. Her Sin series is what you should pick because they are really very good and did I mention they are Regencies? YES, un perfecto! Start with Wager of Sin [] and be prepared to read the trilogy :-)

As for sports themed, I’ll be selfish and recommend my Extreme Speed, Total Control [] for a steamy race around the track.

But, like last time, I still think you should meet Riker and Bethany in JJ Massa’s wereworlf series opener Acting Like Family [], this is a tale that you will not put down until you are finished and wanting more.

  11. Bookseller Chick
    May 24, 2006 @ 12:32:54

Lisa Marie Rice-Contemporary Romantic Suspense (I would put her in the same category as Shannon McKenna’s print books).

  12. Kacey Hammell
    May 24, 2006 @ 13:21:03

I simply love many of the titles that have been mentioned beforehand. Which leads me to picking completely different ones. *g*

    I recommend…

BREEDERS by Alyna Lachlan, available at Sci-fi, spicy and an adventure.

I’ll be selfish and mention my own book, book 1 of the “In the Arms of the Law” series: ISABELLLA’S ILLUSIONS – Romantic Suspense with Paranormal aspects — SUITE Magazine’s Lyssa said – “Kacey Hammell’s ISABELLA’S ILLUSIONS is a heart racing story written out just for my heart. With coffee, chocolate, and a certain purrable P.I., it’s very hard to say no.” Currently available at

3rd recommend/nomination is Tilly Greene’s HAMISH BUCHANAN — unbelievable paranormal/exciting read that captures the heart. Also Available at

Regency/Historicals were mentioned — have to give kudos to Jess Michaels SIN Trilogy & Emma Wildes’ SAVAGE SHORES, all at Venus Press .

PS. Shelby Reed’s titles are fantastic!!

  13. Leigh Ellwood
    May 24, 2006 @ 13:30:11

I’ve weathered many a storm as far as reviewing goes, and I would be happy to send you copies of any of my works. My novel length works are as follows:

Truth or Dare – Erotic contemporary about a legendary musician who finds his muse in a small town schoolteacher yearning to set her inhibitions free. Book One of Dareville (Phaze)

Dare Me – Studio musician escapes to small town Dareville to mend a broken heart and ends up playing Odd Couple with a pretty photographer. Love Romances Golden Rose winner for Best Erotica. Book Two of Dareville (Phaze)

Muse – Blocked romance novelists seeks inspiration from her handsome downstairs neighbor, a transplant hiding a few secrets. (Phaze)

Taste This – My latest release: sci-fi erotic romance about a pastry chef abducted by a free-wheeling alien ship captain. Note this is mainly M/M romance, but there’s a bit of everything in there. (Samhain Publishing)

If you’re interested in either of the Darevilles, the third book will be out this summer.

Hi, I’d like to nominate The Hastings Saga #1: Chase for an Angel – a Civil War romance set on both sides of the war. He’s a Union officer, she’s a Southern Belle and sparks fly though duty calls. During the time when the country is fighting a major war, they fight their own because of it.

Internet Bonds #4: Memphis Belle – what happens when internet “fun” winds up in the wrong hands?

Hellfire – She’s a fire captain whose made rank on her own, he’s a chief who falls hard for her when strange things begin to happen at the firehouse. Can they hold onto their love while dealing with men who want to “purify the department”?

Yes, they are all mine and I will try anything once.

    Thanks for the chance- CP

I’m going to take the plunge, and would love to send you a copy of my first paranormal, titled SAHARA’S RETALIATION. It’s gotten great reviews, and I’m interested in seeing what you would think of the story.

I also suggest Sarah McCarthy’s PROMISES LINGER at Ellora’s Cave, and I nominate Mackenzie McKade THE GAME also available at Ellora’s Cave. The first is a western and THE GAME is BDSM.

Well my first comment didn’t post-so I’ll try this again LOL.

I’d like to nominate two books.

    1) Sahara’s Retaliation by Jade James available at It is my first paranormal story and has gotten some good reviews, so I would be interested in seeing your take of the story.

    2) The Game by MacKenzie McKade available at It is a BDSM story, filled with suspense and hot sex. :-)

My Time Travel Romance, Perfect Timing.
“Perfect Timing made me laugh. Rachel Brooks is a tough, cynical, crazy woman that other women can identify with. She is so totally honest with her feelings and desires. Kyle is the perfect foil. He is sweet, caring and considerate. Whilst there is great humor in this book, there is also sweetness, sadness and passion.” Janet, Fallen Angel Reviews.

    Yes. This is mine. *grins*

    If it’s different you want…

Blood Brothers is about as different as you can get. While not a romance per se the relationship between Kiyoshi and Liu is an intense one that is threatened by the arrival of the mysterious samurai Kuro who comes bearing dark erotic gifts.

You can read an excerpt and longer description HERE

  19. Keishon
    May 24, 2006 @ 15:38:56

I bought Blood Brothers yesterday. I read Manga that sometimes features M/M relationships so while I don’t rush out to buy many of them unless they are very good, I do read them. That would be a good one to read for the contest.

  20. Bridget Midway
    May 24, 2006 @ 17:11:05

What the heck? I’ll throw my hat in the ring. I have a few full-length novels I would like reviewed. They are as follows:

Fascination Street: A contemporary “romance” about a couple that moves to a small cul-de-sac where the other couples all swing/swap partners. This is through Venus Press.

That’s What Friends Are For: Is the song suck in your head now? This story is about best friends with benefits. Can two best friends have sex and still be friends? This one is through Liquid Silver Books.

Corporate Seduction: This is a boss-and-secretary romance with a BDSM twist. This story is through Midnight Showcase.

If you haven’t guessed, all of these stories are erotic romances. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you two will choose one or all of my books!

  21. Alessia Brio
    May 24, 2006 @ 17:22:55

I’ll second the nominations for any/all of Leigh Ellwood’s and Bridget Midway’s work!

  22. Pamela Downs
    May 24, 2006 @ 17:57:14

If you’re interested in quickies, I have penned four steamy short stories/novellas as Pamela Downs:

A Town Called Night by Venus Press has a hunkalicious vampire paramedic hero.

Son of a Preacher Man by Venus Press for those of you who can’t resist a bad boy.

Santa Jinn is in the Mistletoe & Magic anthology by Venus Press, a couple of swinging genies help a married couple rediscover their magic.

Diet Another Day by Phaze is a BBW romantic comedy with a MFM menage.

  23. Anna Fallon
    May 24, 2006 @ 19:21:19

Ahhhhh…I have to recommend Apocalypse Dance by M.Barnette at I dare you not to fall for the hero Bells and the team of fighters in the ravaged futuristic world- if you are looking for something different in erotic romance, it has a kick butt story, then this is it.
    happy reading

  24. Katy
    May 24, 2006 @ 22:22:41

Two Lives in Waltz Time from Vivien Dean, which is magic/time travel and CheckMate from Kallysten, which is a vampire/paranormal story.

  25. Marie Harte
    May 24, 2006 @ 22:40:27

I’d love you to review a few of my books. :)
The Fire Within To save his homeworld from destruction, the Prince of Fire must find a suitable bride in a parallel world without magic, and finds instead a woman who lights his fire both inside and out. (Paranormal erotic romance from New Concepts Publishing)

Seriana Found On the run from an undeniably sexy and ruthless pirate, a desperately determined woman falls headlong into love when she is captured by her relentless pursuer. (Futuristic erotic romance, short story from NCP)

And lastly, Talson’s Wait A woman on the run finds more than she bargained for in the arms of her sexually alluring pursuer. (Futuristic erotic romance from Venus Press, short story)

    Thanks Much!!

People have already listed two of my favorite ebook authors: Shelby Reed (go with The Fifth Favor or Seraphim) and Lisa Marie Rice (Port of Paradise or Midnight Man).

So I’ll add Priscilla Darcy’s Twenty Hours in Boston (sweet, funny contemporary romance), J.B. Skully’s Dead to the Max (paranormal mystery/suspense – but be warned: it’s one of series of five, with an series-long story arc and quite addictive), or Annalise’s Venus Rising (futuristic erotic romance/mystery).

    May 25, 2006 @ 10:26:04

    Hi there,
I’ll throw in my hat, and I’ve even got a few different genres to choose from.

Phantom Lover – sensual paranormal, but nothing like you’ve ever read before! Will overcoming a 200 year curse be more painful than his half-existence in Moonlight Cove? available at Venus Press

Witch Hunt – spicy paranormal. She’s a faith healer with a pesky ghost for a guide. He’s a Native American who’s terrified of the spirit world. Sparks fly when their two lives collide. available at New Concepts Publishing

Lost Lady – contemporary cowboy. She has a past she can’t remember. He struggles to forget his. They find peace in each others’ arms, until the final piece of her missing memory returns to rip them apart forever. available at Wings ePress

Feel like a heel nominating my own books, but here goes. I’d like a review of Bone Deep, a historical/slightly paranormal romance and Seasons of Love, a four story anthology representing several genres.
    Both are Liquid Silver Book releases and you can link to them from my web site;

  29. Bonnie Dee
    May 25, 2006 @ 11:23:16

Sure, I’d love to submit my work. Bone Deep is a historical/slightly paranormal romance between the tattooed man from a traveling carnival and a WWII widow.
Seasons of Love Is a four story, single author anthology representing several genres. Both books are released by Liquid Silver Books and you can check out excerpts at my web site

Thanks for running this contest. Bring on the tough criticism.

Tried to close out the bold, I’m not sure if it’ll work.

Anyway, I don’t have any particular recommendations at this point — I’m still getting caught up on my ebook reading. But I wanted to post a reminder that Fictionwise and eBookwise are having a 25% off anniversary sale. I think some of the books listed above are available there.

  31. Colorful Reviews - Bridging the Gap » Re: Longing for a quickie
    May 25, 2006 @ 13:14:29

[…] While the Ja(y)nes at Dear Author are working on increasing the buzz around ebooks, Solaine at Colorful Reviews caters to the ebook veterans. Of course, print books will always be the leaders of the pack, but the reality is that erotic romance stories in print are hard to come by in South Africa (that’s where I live, btw). For those of us who’ve been on the ebook bandwagon for a while now, the issues are beyond “are ebooks as good as print books.”  I’d like to address the increasing prices of ebooks: at $5.95 for a 150 page book, I have to wonder if I’m getting the bang I seek for my buck. More importantly, you can’t throw an ebook at the wall, re-sell it, donate it to the the library, or even use is as fuel to stoke the fire during the cold June/July months. At $2.99 a pop, a quickie that turns out bad almost seems worth the effort (Sure glad I didn’t buy a full length novel from that author).  So for the month of June, I will be reviewing quickies, shorts, heatwaves, whatever you want to call them, as long as their $2.99 or less!  Hopefully by the end of the month, I’ll have a couple more full length stories to add to my TBR pile. At the very least, I’ll know who NOT to buy full length novels from. […]

I want to second that you should check out Bonnie Dee’s novels, especially Bone Deep. (Lisa Marie Rice, whom I mentioned earlier, writes for Ellora’s Cave, by the way).
