Thanks for the series wrap-up. I have vol I in my queue--looks as if I'll need to move it up. (I read AV's Country Mouse just last night.)

@Christine M.: Oh, good grief, of course you're right. I forgot that it's a common French name. I always pronounce it as "roi" when I see it in a French context, whereas the Indian surname is closer to the first-name pronunciation (e.g. Roy Rogers).

@Susan: Sorry about that! It's kind of interesting in the way it screws up, though. Not that that is much consolation, but it's not unreadable by any means. It really only went fully off the rails for me in the last third to half of the book.

@Jenny Lyn: @Merrian: It's interesting how Silvio is the more immediately compelling character, but Stefano is the one who really grows and changes over the course of the five volumes.

I thought about Volume 5 a lot, and it's difficult to see how it could have been done differently without substantially changing the structure of the installment and/or adding another volume. Maybe it's just that I wanted the denouement and conclusion to be longer and more drawn out. I think the storyline is really clever, I just had to suspend more disbelief. Which sounds silly when you think about the OTT aspects of some of the parts that came before!

It says something about how compelling the whole series is that it's only at the end that I start to complain about realism.

@Jayne: You do it often enough, I figured it was my turn.

@Cara Ellison: Thanks, I appreciate that! It's a strange blend of good writing and bad author choices, in many ways.

And oh, I was incorrect in my answer to Ann Bruce: she has at least FOUR pseudonyms, when you include the Nina Lane one. That seems like overkill, especially since three are for erotic novels and one of for historical romance. The Nina Roy one is interesting because Roy is an Indian (Bengali) surname, so it can give the impression that the author is of South Asian ethnicity. She may well be, but the historical inaccuracies are there regardless, and I'd hate to think that because the author's last name is Roy a reader is more likely to assume that this is all historically accurate/authentic.

@Ann Bruce: Yes, that's the same author. She has written erotic romance as Natasha Rostova and Nina Roy and she has a historical romance coming out this fall under a third name.

@Kim T.: I thought about DNFing it, but I was determined to get to the end. When I hit the unbelievable WTFery that was the epilogue, I was determined to review it.

I would suggest the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy that Anne Rice which she wrote under the name A.N.Roquelaure. It's been out several years and was definitely an excellent read. Very very loosely based on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, but erotic BDSM in a medievel fantasy world.

Also, an older book by Kathryn Harvey called "Butterfly" which isn't really complete BDSM, but more of a book about a Beverly Hills brothel that makes women's fantasies come true.

Gah. Every time you review a Karina Bliss novel, I'm reminded as to why I need to read her Superromances someday soon. I have to say, it's a welcomed relief to hear that there was no attraction between the two prior to her husband's death - it sets up the romance, but it's hard to make it feel really romantic if the first marriage was good. This just avoids some potentially squicky vibes with its decision to keep them sexually unaware of each other until her husband's death.

I loved this series of linked short stories. I think the structure sets us up because we are only seeing the characters at certain points of their journey, not with them every step of the way which is how a series unfolds. This means as readers, we are expected to take somethings as given. I wonder if this works to make us more at ease with Silvio's character with his sociopathic tendencies because we have to take him as he is? I thought the people and their relationships were all true to their own understanding of their worlds and their own internal logics and that this consistency carried them through the story arc and is a wonderful strength in the writing. It is often something that other authors fail at.

You have put your finger on my one discomfort - Stefano's unilateral decision-making which has implications for the ending of the story - you can't take the Boss out of the Boss?

I loved these stories and my own rating matches yours Sunita.

Sunita,

I always enjoy your reviews, particularly ones with Indian characters or backgrounds. Your knowledge about the history is inspiring. I enjoyed your review of this one too, though the book doesn't sound like anything I'd pick up.

Is this a new book by Jeanne Ray? I absolutely loved "Step, Ball, Change" and liked "Romeo & Julie" and "Romeo & Julie Get Lucky", thought her book with "Cake" in the title was only so-so. But I read somewhere that she said she had only 4 books in her and that her muse had disappeared, so I'm happy to learn that she's now increased her output by 25%.

As for those who don't want to spend $12 for copies of her older books, they are often available at the library or at a UBS.

Is this a new book by Jeanne Ray? I absolutely loved “Step, Ball, Change” and liked “Romeo & Julie” and “Romeo & Julie Get Lucky”, thought her book with “Cake” in the title was only so-so. But I read somewhere that she said she had only 4 books in her and that her muse had disappeared, so I’m happy to learn that she’s now increased her output by 25%.

As for those who don’t want to spend $12 for copies of her older books, they are often available at the library or at a UBS.
