Sabriel (Abhorsen Series #1) by Garth Nix, Leo and Diane Dillon (Illustrator)Sabriel by Garth Nix. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life’and comes face to face with her own hidden destiny. . . Garth Nix’s first young adult novel, Sabriel was recently nominated for the Aurealis Award for Excellence in Science Fiction in Australia.

PW writes “Although Sabriel is possessed of much heavy knowledge (“A year ago, I turned the final page of The Book of the Dead. I don’t feel young any more”), she is still a teenager and vulnerable where her father and love for Touchstone are concerned, making her a sympathetic heroine. Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel, an Australian import, is excellent high fantasy. The suitably climactic ending leaves no loose ends, but readers will hope for a sequel.”

Inside Heat by Roz LeeInside Heat by Roz Lee. $ FREE

From the Jacket Copy:

Professional baseball players,Jeff and Jason Holder are at the top of their game. Jeff is the Texas Mustangs’ closer, revered throughout the Major League for throwing inside heat, while his twin brother Jason is the team’s starting catcher and star hitter. The two have always shared more than their identical DNA, so when they meet Megan, it’s no wonder they both want her.

Megan doesn’t know baseball, but she does know a sexy guy when she sees one – or two! The relationship makes it to first base in record time – but Megan dreams of a Grand Slam – marriage and kids- with Jeff.

Jeff shares the same dreams, but getting the team to the playoffs is all he has time to think about – until an injury bruises his ego and threatens to end his pitching career. Megan suddenly finds herself on the outside – the twins dirty little secret. It doesn’t help that Jeff has gotten the wrong impression about her and his brother.

It’s going to take more thanphysical therapy for Jeff to mend his arm, and his relationship with Megan.

The blurb is rather confusing and frankly it sounded like a menage set up…and yes, it is. So I dunno if it ends with a committed menage or what. Werd. There was one review that said it could have used a heavier editing hand because of repetitive phrasing and jarring transitions but that the knowledge of the sport seemed mostly accurate.

No Prince Charming by Shiloh Walker
No Prince Charming
by Shiloh Walker. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

Her Happy-Ever-After has been a long time coming…

Elle spent years trying to get over her so-called Prince Charming, and she’s finally getting the hang of it. A Grimm—a guardian angel with unique gifts—she spends her nights trolling for demons and kicking ass, and lately, her days have been spent with her on-and-off-again lover, Ren, a fellow Grimm. But fate has other plans in store for Elle, plans that include Michael, the prince from her youth who broke her heart.

“What do you choose…live for her? Or would you rather die?” That was the choice Michael was given all those years ago. Although he knew she’d never forgive him, when Michael was given the chance to become a Grimm, he took it. Still, he isn’t so sure Elle needs him in her life. With a lover at her side and a mission before her, Elle looks like she’s doing just fine without him.

But the not-so-charming prince isn’t going to back off that easily…not if there’s a chance she might need him again. He’d do anything to save her. Kill for her, live for her, die for her…

The reviews say that this is a short novel-maybe even a novella. There’s a little bit of every kind of sex in here but maybe the plot / story was underdeveloped.

Adolf Hitler: The Definitive Biography by John TolandAdolf Hitler: The Definitive Biography by John Toland. $ 2/99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John Toland’s classic, definitive biography of Adolf Hitler remains the most thorough, readable, accessible, and, as much as possible, objective account of the life of a man whose evil affect on the world in the twentieth century will always be felt.

Toland’s research provided one of the final opportunities for a historian to conduct personal interviews with over two hundred individuals intimately associated with Hitler. At a certain distance yet still with access to many of the people who enabled and who opposed the führer and his Third Reich, Toland strove to treat this life as if Hitler lived and died a hundred years before instead of within his own memory. From childhood and obscurity to his desperate end, Adolf Hitler emerges as, in Toland’s words, “far more complex and contradictory . . . obsessed by his dream of cleansing Europe Jews . . . a hybrid of Prometheus and Lucifer.”

Based on previously unpublished documents, diaries, notes, photographs, and dramatic interviews with Hitler’s colleagues and associates, this is the definitive biography of one of the most despised yet fascinating figures of the 20th century. Toland won the Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for The Rising Sun: The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1936-1945. 150 photographs; 3 maps.

“An unusually revealing picture . . . highly detailed . . . marvelously absorbing . . . must be ranked as one of the most complete pictures of Hitler.” —The New York Times

The Bone Season by Samantha ShannonThe Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

The first pick of NBC’s Today Book Club

Featured in New York, USA Today, and Forbes, and on CNN.com.

It appeared on every summer reading list for 2013, from Entertainment Weekly to USA Today. Now, the debut that thrilled readers everywhere is available in paperback. Enter the world of Paige Mahoney, a gifted clairvoyant, a “dreamwalker,” in the year 2059. Her natural talents are considered treasonous under the current regime. Snatched away to a secret prison, she encounters another race, the Rephaim, creatures who wish to control the powers of Paige and those like her. One in particular will be assigned as her keeper, her trainer. But his motives are mysterious. To regain her freedom, Paige must learn to trust, in the prison where she is meant to die.

This book had so much publicity but as far as I know, didn’t really take off. It was fairly well reviewed although Kirkus said the world building was complex to the point of being impenetrable. Library Journal wrote “The first in a series of seven titles, this book sets the stage for a journey of discovery for Paige who may very well discover that she has to save the world whether she wants to or not. It will be interesting to see what Shannon does in her next installment. “

Housekeeping by Marilynne RobinsonHousekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. $ 2.50 AMZN | Google

From the Jacket Copy:

Winner of the Pen/Hemingway Award
A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, the eccentric and remote sister of their dead mother. The family house is in the small town of Fingerbone on a glacial lake in the Far West, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town “chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere.” Ruth and Lucille’s struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transcience

From the reviews, it sounds like you read this book for the writing skill rather than the story. One reviewer said it was the triumph of the mundane. The plot, if you can say that there is one here, isn’t what matters. It is the way in which every action and behavior is described.

Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors by Stephen AmbroseCrazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors by Stephen Ambrose. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

On the sparkling morning of June 25, 1876, 611 men of the United States 7th Cavalry rode toward the banks of Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory, where three thousand Indians stood waiting for battle. The lives of two great warriors would soon be forever linked throughout history: Crazy Horse, leader of the Oglala Sioux, and General George Armstrong Custer. Both were men of aggression and supreme courage. Both became leaders in their societies at very early ages. Both were stripped of power, in disgrace, and worked to earn back the respect of their people. And to both of them, the unspoiled grandeur of the Great Plains of North America was an irresistible challenge. Their parallel lives would pave the way, in a manner unknown to either, for an inevitable clash between two nations fighting for possession of the open prairie.

Epic and accurate was one review. That’s a worthy endorsement.
