Hard As You Can (Hard Ink Series #2) by Laura KayeHard As You Can (Hard Ink Series #2) by Laura Kaye. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn’t want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can—and never let go.

The first book was sale priced for a while so it’s good time to pick up this novel. I started the first book but never finished it. Wasn’t in the mood at the time, but I’m going to buy this…just in case.

9780671737832_p0_v1_s260x420Lion’s Lady by Julie Garwood. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Christina Bennett had taken London society by storm. The ravishing beauty guarded the secret of her mysterious past until the night Lyon, Marquis of Lyonwood, stole a searching, sensuous kiss. An arrogant nobleman with a pirate’s passions, he tasted the wild fire smoldering beneath Christina’s cool charm and swore to posess her…
But the fiesty and defiant Christina would not be so easily conquered. Mistress of her heart and of her fortune, she resisted Lyon’s sensuous caresses. She dared not surrender to his love…for then, she must also forsake her precious secret…and her promised destiny!

If I hadn’t bought all of Garwood’s books when they first were released digitally at the price of $5.99, I’d be all over this. Lion’s Lady is one of my very favorite Garwood books. I loved her quirkiness, her many divorces of the hero, and just the sweet and wonderful romance.

Lyon noticed Brown standing in the open doorway then. His butler looked upset. “Good afternoon, my lord,” Brown called out. “It is so very good to have you back,” he added. His voice sounded strained to Lyon, relieved as well. “Did you see your shoes, sir?”
“I’m not blind, man. Of course I saw them. Would you care to explain what in thunderation is going on?”
“Your wife’s orders,” Brown announced.
“Past wife,” Elbert interjected with a cackle.
Lyon took a deep breath. “What are you talking about?” He addressed his question to Brown, believing his young butler would make more sense than the old man snickering with laughter behind him.
“You’re being divorced, my lord.”
“I’m what?”
Brown’s shoulders sagged. He knew his lord wasn’t going to take the news well. “Divorced.”
“Cast out, my lord, pushed aside, forgotten, dead in her heart—”
“I get your meaning, Elbert,” Lyon muttered in exasperation. “I’m aware of what the word divorce means.”
Lyon continued into the house. The old servant shuffled after him. “Those were her very words. My mistress is divorcing you the way her people do. She said it was quite all right to get rid of a husband. You have to find someplace else to live.”
“I what?” Lyon asked, certain he hadn’t heard correctly.
Brown’s insistent nod indicated he had.
“You’re cast out, pushed aside—”
“For God’s sake, Elbert, cease your litany,” Lyon demanded. He turned back to Brown. “What is the significance of the shoes?”
“They signify your departure, my lord,” Brown said.
The butler tried not to stare at the incredulous look on his master’s face. He was in jeopardy of losing his control. He stared at the floor instead.
“Let me get this straight in my mind,” Lyon muttered. “My wife believes the house belongs to her?”
“And your mother, of course,” Brown blurted out. “She’s keeping her.”
Brown was biting his lower lip. Lyon thought he might be trying not to laugh.
“Of course,” Lyon drawled.
Elbert tried to be helpful once again. “It’s the way her people do,” he interjected, his voice gratingly cheerful.
“Where is my wife?” Lyon asked, ignoring Elbert’s comments.
He didn’t wait for his servants to answer him but took the steps two at a time to reach the bedrooms. A sudden thought made him pause. “Did she cut her hair?” he called out.
“She did,” Elbert shouted before Brown could open his mouth. “It’s the way of it,” Elbert insisted. “Once the hair’s cut—well, then you’re as good as dead to her. You’re set aside, cast—”
“I’ve gotten her message,” Lyon shouted. “Brown, bring my shoes inside. Elbert, go sit somewhere.”
“My lord?” Brown called out.
“Do the French really follow these laws?”
Lyon contained his smile. “Did my wife say it was the law?” he asked.
“Yes, my lord.”
“And she told you she was from France?” he asked his butler.
Brown nodded.
“Then it must be true,” Lyon announced. “I would like a bath, Brown. Leave the shoes until later,” he added before turning back to his destination.

“My lord, I would never presume to intrude upon your private affairs, but I was wondering if you’ll be honoring your wife’s decision.”
Lyon had to remind himself that Brown was very young and hadn’t been in his household long enough to know his lord’s ways well. He’d never have asked such a ridiculous question otherwise. “Why, of course, Brown,” Lyon drawled out.
“Then you’ll let her divorce you?” Brown blurted out, clearly stunned.
“I believe she already did divorce me,” Lyon answered with a grin.
The butler wasn’t at all happy with that announcement. “I shall miss you, my lord.”
“She’s keeping you, too?” Lyon asked.
Brown nodded. He looked miserable. “My lady explained that we are part of her family now.”
“She’s keeping the full staff, my lord.”

9780758203199_p0_v1_s260x420Behind Closed Doors by Shannon McKenna. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Surveillance expert Seth Mackey knows everything about the women his millionaire boss Victor Lazar toys with–and tosses aside. But Lazar’s latest plaything, Raine Cameron, is different. Beautiful. Vulnerable. And innocent. Just looking at her triggers a white-hot passion Seth can barely control as night after night, he watches her on a dozen different video screens. Raine is pure temptation, but Seth can’t slip up: he’s convinced Lazar had his half-brother murdered. His secret investigation–and his life–are on the line. But then he finds out that Raine may be Lazar’s next victim…
Raine knows she’s being watched–but no one can see the secrets in her heart. She has reasons of her own to seek revenge on Victor Lazar, and she will, despite her fear–and the distracting presence of Seth Mackey. His fiercely masculine good looks and animal sensuality stir her most erotic fantasies when she’s alone…and lead her to a bold plan. Offering her body to him, surrendering totally to his ruthless desire, might well push her beyond all emotional limits–and beyond fear itself.

I listed a deal a week or so ago for McKenna but said it wasn’t her best. I think this is her best. Seth is a stalker, for sure, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you are interested in McKenna, this is the book to buy.

From ducks to penguins to peacocks to parrots, Donna Andrews knows her birds! And she’s channeled all her skill and winning humor into one of the most accomplished, entertaining cozy series around. It all began with Murder with Peacocks, which won the St. Martin’s Minotaur/Malice Domestic Best First Traditional Mystery Novel Competition. Upon learning that her novel had won, Donna acquired a copy of the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds and settled herself down with her zany heroine, blacksmith Meg Langslow. The fun has not stopped since. Murder with Peacocks scooped up the Agatha, Anthony, and Barry Awards, along with the Romantic Times award for best first novel and the Lefty award for the funniest mystery.

See how this stunning, laugh-out-loud series all began and meet Meg Langslow, one of the most dynamic and hilarious characters ever to grace the mystery shelves.

This is an especially good deal because it has two books. The mysteries are more lighthearted. One of the reviews called the protagonist a “lovable loon.”

Catching Jordan by Miranda KenneallyCatching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

What girl doesn’t want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Jordan Woods isn’t just surrounded by hot guys, though–she leads them as the captain and quarterback of her high school football team. They all see her as one of the guys and that’s just fine. As long as she gets her athletic scholarship to a powerhouse university.

But everything she’s ever worked for is threatened when Ty Green moves to her school. Not only is he an amazing QB, but he’s also amazingly hot. And for the first time, Jordan’s feeling vulnerable. Can she keep her head in the game while her heart’s on the line?

Sarah and I briefly chatted about this book on a recent podcast. I can’t remember why exactly but I enjoyed this YA sports book quite a bit. The heroine is a real jock playing football with the guys. I thought Kenneally did a fabulous job of navigating both her friendships, her romantic entanglements, chauvinism, and her love of football. Definitely recommend at this price.

9780062276223_p0_v4_s260x420When the Duke Was Wicked
by Lorraine Heath. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

They are England’s most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways . . .

Lady Grace Mabry’s ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her— or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?

With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman’s favor— by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man’s marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores . . .

This is a “dead ex” book meaning Lovingdon once had a wife and child who died from typhus. He’s retreated from society but re-enters it to help Grace ferret out who is a fortune hunter and how to decipher whether a man truly loves her. Sounds kind of swoon although some of the reviews comment that there seemed to be more friendship than eros type of love between the two.

9780451466686_p0_v2_s260x420Before Jamaica Lane by Samantha Young. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

The follow-up to the runaway bestsellers ON DUBLIN STREET and DOWN LONDON ROAD

Despite her outgoing demeanor, Olivia is painfully insecure around the opposite sex—usually, she can’t get up the nerve to approach guys she’s interested in. But moving to Edinburgh has given her a new start, and, after she develops a crush on a sexy postgrad, she decides it’s time to push past her fears and go after what she wants.

Nate Sawyer is a gorgeous player who never commits, but to his close friends, he’s as loyal as they come. So when Olivia turns to him with her relationship woes, he offers to instruct her in the art of flirting and to help her become more sexually confident.

The friendly education in seduction soon grows into an intense and hot romance. But then Nate’s past and commitment issues rear their ugly heads, and Olivia is left brokenhearted. When Nate realizes he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he will have to work harder than he ever has before to entice his best friend into falling back in love with him—or he may lose her forever?.

Kati D gave this book a B+.

There was a lot to like about this book. Olivia is smart, but also reads to me like a young 20?s woman. She *thinks* she won’t get caught up taking sex lessons from a bad boy, but of course she does. She’s young, and definitely naive, but she knows her worth and she doesn’t put up with Nate’s commitment phobia. She ends things, cries and tries her best to move on. Nate is a dreamboat of a hero. He’s experienced, funny, makes with the dirty talk, and is a total commitment-phobe. What I liked about him, is that when he realizes his mistake, he throws himself into getting Liv back. He pursues her, and in the end, makes a fabulous Big Romantic Gesture that made me heave the big sigh. I love a hero who gives good grovel. Although this book can stand alone, there are myriad references to past couples, which may be distracting for a reader who prefers to enjoy books in order. For me, Before Jamaica Lane features a truly enjoyable, if young, couple and a really satisfying love story. Final grade: B+

9781622667697_p0_v1_s260x420Proof by Seduction by Courtney Milan. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

t’s not easy for a woman with neither money nor family to make her own way in the world, but as one of London’s premier fortune-tellers, Jenny Keeble has managed precisely that. All she has to do is smile sweetly, listen carefully, and tell her clients precisely what they want to hear. It works…until Gareth Carhart, the scientifically-minded Marquess of Blakely, decides to prove that she’s a fraud.

At first, all Gareth wants is to free his gullible cousin from Jenny’s clutches. But he discovers that she’s clever, spirited, beautiful, and not at all the conniving liar that he initially imagined. Still, there’s nothing logical about his attraction to her, and so he refuses to give in to it. He’s vowed to ruin her, so he will—even if he has to break his own heart in the process.

This is an enhanced ebook. In addition to the text of the book itself, it contains pictures, audio, and author commentary. You can read this enhanced ebook on any device, but the audio content may not be accessible on all ereaders. That content has been made available on the web, so you won’t miss anything if your device doesn’t support audio.

Proof by Seduction is the first full-length book in the Carhart series. The full series is:

This Wicked Gift, a prequel novella
Proof by Seduction
Trial by Desire

Courtney Milan is releasing a number of her books in “enhanced form” and distributing them through Entangled. The books contain pictures and audio such as thoughts from Mr. Milan and so forth. I’ve read one enhanced book published by Jenn LeBlanc, or at least I should say I started to read it. I found the pictures to be distracting primarily because I didn’t really relate the people I saw in the images to the characters on the page. I think illustrations would be better? I’m not sure. Suffice to say that I’m not really interested in the enhanced editions but at 99c a piece, it’s a nice way to pick up these titles if you haven’t already purchased them.

I also have to say that either Harlequin is really generous to allow her to self publish her own competing ebook edition or there is a huge hole in their contract. Really who is going to buy an ebook at $7.99 when there’s another one (even if it has annoying sound and pictures) for only $.99?
