Spellcaster (Spellcaster Series #1) by Claudia GraySpellcaster by Claudia Gray. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

A boy cursed with visions that lead to madness. A girl granted the powers to save him.

When Nadia’s family arrives at their new home in Captive’s Sound, she realizes instantly that there’s more to this town than meets the eye. As a witch, Nadia senses that dark magic is at work—magic wielded by a force more evil and more powerful than any she has encountered before.

Mateo has lived in Captive’s Sound his whole life, haunted by his family’s tormented past. When the strange dreams he’s been having of rescuing a beautiful girl from a car accident actually come to pass, he knows the whispers about the “family curse” are true—and that he’s doomed.

Despite the laws of witchcraft that would keep them apart, Nadia and Mateo are drawn together to break the chains of the evil threatening the entire town . . . and their lives.

Claudia Gray is the pseudonym of New Orleans-based writer Amy Vincent, the author of the New York Times bestselling Evernight series. (I’ve never read the Evernight series). School Library Journal says “While Gray relies heavily on common tropes in paranormal romance, her story manages to rise above others in the genre with an intriguing history of witches and witchcraft. Though the plot stops and starts, the characters are sympathetic. The ending promises more battles to come, and fans will clamor to know what happens.”

The Suit by B. N. TolerThe Suit by B. N. Toler. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

What happens when two dreams collide?
Fed up with the farm life and his one-time love of training horses, John Wilson has traded his tattered boots and jeans for power suits and cufflinks. Through hard work and determination, John has just graduated from law school and is focused on a fresh start. Refusing to let his bitter past hinder his future, John is intent on moving forward with his new life.

Except there’s one last thing he has to do-settle old debts before he can truly move on.

Unfortunately, settling debts involves him returning to a life he’s worked hard to forget. A mind-numbing summer working on a horse farm awaits him, and he’s dreading every damn minute of it.

Edie James is mourning the loss of her grandfather when John Wilson shows up in his perfectly tailored suit, reeking sexiness and city elegance-everything she’s not. Their meeting is less than pleasant as they both distastefully size up one another.

She thinks he’s arrogant and a white-collar yuppie.

He thinks she’s a simple, goody two-shoes farm girl.

Edie’s grandfather made a new will before he passed leaving stipulations in order for Edie to inherit the family farm. And as if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, the suit has to work on the farm with her for three months to settle a debt he owed to her grandfather.

And he’s moving in with her.

With a rocky start, the two seemingly polar opposites call a truce and attempt to be friends. As their unexpected friendship blooms, an attraction develops and both realize their first impression of each other is far from the truth. Now this once dreaded summer is set to be the hottest and most unforgettable they’ve ever had.

I was somewhat intrigued by this story when it was being publicized a few weeks ago. I’m a little leery of the law school aspect of it. It’s #1 in Humorous Erotica on Amazon. The reviews are almost universal in their praise. One of the reviews says the story is unusual but the will thing, the opposites thing are kind of common…Anyway, I’m still on the fence.

An Unlikely Duchess by Nadine MillardAn Unlikely Duchess by Nadine Millard. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Edward Crawdon, Duke of Hartridge is being forced by his slightly overbearing, but loving mother to spend time with her old friends at their estate in Ireland. He is not aware but a contract exists between the two families that states Edward must marry their eldest daughter. On the day of his arrival Edward, who is yet to be made aware of the contract, meets Lady Rebecca, Caroline’s younger sister under very unusual circumstances. Edward cannot stop thinking about Lady Rebecca but she is completely unsuited to being a duchess. However, she becomes rather a toast of the Ton and Edward realises that he cannot stand idly by and watch Rebecca marry someone else. He cannot marry her but does not want her to marry anyone else! Ultimately, Edward must decide; will he admit his true feelings for Rebecca? Will he defy his responsibilities and duties, his idea of a “proper” duchess and follow his heart?

One reviewer on Amazon said “I never really got to know either of them from their own actions but had to be told by the author whether one was arrogant or the other caring and compassionate. The liberal use of exclamation points as the author tells us about the characters’ thoughts does not make them any more interesting. About two-thirds of the way through the story the reader is informed that the hero and heroine have many deep conversations in which they learn about each other, but we are not privy to the conversations in any way, so really, the skin-deep attractions are not moved forward in any way. “
