Grief, assassins, sex on the beach

Grief, assassins, sex on the beach

A Certain Latitude by Janet MullanyA Certain Latitude by Janet Mullany. $ 0.99

From the Jacket Copy:

1800—Allan Pendale, lawyer and the youngest son of the Earl of Frensham, is bound by ship for the West Indies, to impart the news to his estranged father that his mother has died. But he also has another mission—to find out the truth of his origins.
Miss Clarissa Onslowe is also on board, traveling to take up the role of governess to the daughter of the wealthy planter Mr. Lemarchand. There is nothing to keep her in England. An indiscretion five years before led to her reputation being ruined; her abolitionist family has disowned her and no gentleman would marry her now. But now she seeks redemption with her family by revealing the truth about the miserable lives of the slaves who work on the sugar plantations.
Clarissa’s previous encounter with love has left her aroused and restless, and Allan is a man for whom lust is a daily pastime; thrown together belowdecks during the long sea voyage, they embark on a sensual odyssey where no desire is left untested. But if they thought their exploration and ecstasy could not be bettered, then there are more pleasures to be taken and boundaries to be broken at their island destination—where “March” Lemarchand, sugar king and master of seduction, awaits them both…

A marvel of sex, smarts, and wit—Pam Rosenthal/Molly Weatherfield

Unabashedly wicked … titillating, witty, and very, very sexy—Colette Gale

A torrid, twisting tale of a trio bound together by love, lust and tropical latitudes. Scorching!—Maggie Robinson

Features a menage, MMF, where each person is in love with the one who can’t love them back. If you liked the movie Belle this is set about 20 years later. Includes a research bibliography and lots of sex.

Blogger M Harvey wrote: “What made this book so enjoyable for me was what I’ve now come to expect in Janet Mullany’s work, namely a plot that turns a well-worn trope on its head and scenes of intimate passion which envelop not only the titular hero and heroine but also the supporting characters who enter their sphere with intentions both good and evil. ”

We reviewed it when it was published as Forbidden Shores.

When Snow Falls by Brenda Novak. When Snow Falls by Brenda Novak. $ 1.99 AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

After growing up in cheap motels, moving from town to town with her sister and mother, Cheyenne Christensen is grateful to be on her own. She’s grateful, too, for the friends she found once her family settled in California. But she’s troubled by the mystery of her earliest memories, most of which feature a smiling blonde woman. A woman who isn’t her mother.

Although Cheyenne has repeatedly asked for explanations, the people who could help aren’t talking. Cheyenne is set on finding answers, but without so much as a birth certificate, it won’t be easy.

Things get even more complicated when her closest friend is attracted to the man Cheyenne has secretly loved for years. For Eve’s sake, she decides to step aside—which lands her right in the arms of Dylan Amos, oldest and baddest of the hell-raising Amos brothers. He’s the kind of guy she’s sworn to avoid. She can’t afford to make a mistake, not when she finally has a chance to learn who she really is and change her life for the better. But?maybe there’s more to Dylan than she thought. Maybe letting him go would be a bigger mistake.

It takes a while for this to build and apparently the way that the opening reads may mislead the reader as to who is the romantic pairing for the love story. But at least there is no terrible spoiler event (at least not from what I can see in the reviews).

A Grief Observed by C. S. LewisA Grief Observed by C. S. Lewis. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Written after his wife’s tragic death as a way of surviving the “mad midnight moment,” A Grief Observed is C. S. Lewis’s honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. This work contains his concise, genuine reflections on that period: “Nothing will shake a man — or at any rate a man like me — out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself.” This is a beautiful and unflinchingly homest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

I listened to this book while jogging for a couple of weeks. It’s enlightening but not very good jogging material. Just FYI.

Nowhere Safe: Slye Temp Book 2 by Dianna Love.Nowhere Safe: Slye Temp Book 2 by Dianna Love. $ Free

From the Jacket Copy:

New York Times Dianna Love’s exciting and sexy Slye Temp romantic thriller series where black ops agents risk all to save the world and the women they love

Slye Temp agent Josh Carrington should have died during the blown UK mission, but he didn’t. Scars fade and nightmares can be managed, but he’ll never forget watching an innocent woman die because she trusted him. Tempted by the best, he sticks to Personal Rule Number One: Never mix business with pleasure.

Slye Temp sends Josh to uncover a leak in a DEA task force…a mole in league with the traitor who betrayed the UK team. A deadly shipment is bound for the US and nothing will stop Josh from taking down this mole, blocking the shipment, and nabbing the traitor. Not even Trish Jackson, hardheaded sister of his #1 DEA suspect. A faceless stalker has turned Trish’s life into a living nightmare and threatens to kill anyone who helps her, including Josh, the new man on her brother’s task force who has planted both unwelcome feet in the middle of her world and refuses to leave. The closer Josh gets to the twisted truth, the more he struggles to keep Trish out of harm’s way–and his bed–but the sultry firecracker gets under his skin like no other woman, forcing him to question everything, starting with Rule Number One.

It’s the second book in a romantic suspense series. Book 1 was a prequel. One of the reviews says it is a complete story that doesn’t end in a cliffhanger and another review says that the big plot that overarches this series does make the story feel unfinished.

TOUCH OF FROST, book 1:

My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I’m determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died. . .

Something-Wicked-newSomething Wicked by Angela Campbell. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Something wicked this way comes…

All homicide detective Dylan Collins wants is a few hours of pleasure to take his mind off of the case haunting him. A serial killer is stalking the streets of Charleston, SC – a killer who calls himself The Grim Reaper. When the woman he’d just spent the night with turns up and offers her services as a psychic consultant on the case, his ardor quickly cools. Last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a con artist.

It doesn’t take long for Dylan to realize Alexandra King is the real deal – and the killer’s next target. Dylan’s protective instincts battle his reluctance to get too involved with a woman he isn’t sure he can trust. As they get closer to finding the killer, they also grow closer to one another, but will Alexandra’s secret agenda destroy their chance at happiness – if the killer doesn’t strike first?

“Something Wicked” is a paranormal romance heavy on suspense. It’s the second book in a series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. It has humor with suspense, ghost stories, serial killer mysteries, psychics, one-night-stands turned into relationships, a sexy cop and a kickass heroine. /box] AmazonBNKoboBook DepositoryAREApple Google

In Bed With The Devil by Lorraine HeathIn Bed With The Devil by Lorraine Heath. $ 2.99

From the Jacket Copy:

They call him the Devil Earl—a scoundrel and accused murderer who grew up on the violent London streets. A proper young lady risks more than her reputation when consorting with the roguishly handsome Lucian Langdon, but Lady Catherine Mabry believes she has no choice. To protect those she loves, she would do anything—even strike a bargain with the devil himself.

Lucian desires respectability and a wife above all else, but the woman of his choosing lacks the social graces to be accepted by the aristocracy. Catherine can help Lucian gain everything he wants. But what she asks for in exchange will put their very lives in jeopardy. When danger closes in, Catherine discovers a man of immense passion and he discovers a woman of immeasurable courage. As secrets from his dark past are revealed, Lucian begins to question everything he knows to be true, including the yearnings of his own heart.

This novel is book 1 in her Scoundrels of St. James series. Lorraine Heath is now working on the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James Series, which feature the children from the original Scoundrel books.  I gave the book a C+ back in 2008.

Interestingly I found I was more engrossed when Catherine’s actions lived up to her talk. She confronts, she leads, she directs. She becomes that person who is unafraid to live. There was a point in which she accuses Lucian of being a coward that really marked the turning point of the book for me. I was totally engaged by the end of the story.
