Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo)

Welcome to Author Promo Night Open Thread. The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

  • The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of August would be a Sept release)
  • You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
  • No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
  • Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
  • This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
  • DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

That’s it. Post away.

My 2007 Golden Heart finalist, Beneath the Surface, comes out this Tuesday from http://samhainpublishing.com/. It’s “Twister” meets “Into the Blue,” a reunion story of two underwater archaeologists. Here’s the blurb:

In retrospect, perhaps archaeologist Mallory Reeves shouldn't have delivered the divorce papers to her estranged husband mere weeks before her marriage to another man. She knew seeing Adrian again would stir up memories, but she didn't expect so many of them to be good, not after the mess they both made three years ago. She also didn't expect to want to stay at the dig site on the Yucatan Peninsula. But the lure of the ancient ship and, yes, her sexy ex provide more of a draw than the white picket fence she thought she wanted. Marine archaeologist Adrian Reeves has good reason to trust no one. His former partner-’and former best friend-’made off with his last archaeological find. And his wife left him, frustrated by his obsession for professional revenge. Now both Mallory and his nemesis have returned, and it can't be an accident that they've turned up in the middle of the most important excavation of his career. Seeing her again unearths old pain-’and rekindles never-forgotten desire. Now he has to decide if he can trust Mallory again. More importantly, if he can trust himself with her.

    Also, SMOKIN’ cover ;)

Two books releasing this month, back to back. No, I didn’t plan it that way, my publishers did…

    ————–
Human Touch kicks off a 3-book series set on another planet (far, far away). Here’s the blurb (check my web site for the buy link later this week).

Isbel Kensington’s lack of paranormal Talent makes her unique, especially given her powerful paranormal family who run the planet Delmorna. Isbel’s studies into ancient diseases uncovered an old family secret which threatens the stability of the government run by Isbel’s devious sister Dru.

Cyrus Durant is a cloned human and undercover cop who has to act as Isbel’s Paid Male during her research holiday. He has to get close to her and determine if she’s involved in Dru's treasonous plots. Cyrus has never been this close to a woman. The experience is overwhelming, especially when he and Isbel start to form an intimate psychic bond.

As Isbel’s research unearths the truth about the planet’s history, she and Cyrus become targets in a deadly political struggle. In a final confrontation with her family, Isbel finds out just how deeply blood ties run — and how easily they can be severed.

    ———————

And Temperance is the third book in my History Patrol series, where reincarnated lovers meet at the place where one betrayed the other … and died. Again: check my web site for the buy link later on this week:

It's 1934 and St. Paul is a haven for gangsters, criminals and other ne'er-do-wells. It's also the temporary home of Marcos Darby, a time traveler from the twenty-third century who's overstayed his welcome in the past.

Will Taupert is a Guide with the History Patrol, sent with his telepathic companion Theo to bring Darby back to the future. Will and Theo have been on many time trips together, but this one seems different, familiar, and Will starts to wonder if he's been here before.

For Theo, this trip is her one chance to earn Will's forgiveness for wrongs in a former lifetime. Now history is repeating itself and she can't do anything but watch as Will is forced to make a fateful decision, one that could grant Theo forgiveness or end her life.

I wanted to let those of you following my Faustin Brothers series know that the third and final book, Damned by Blood, will release at Samhain on September 22nd.

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, these are sexy paranormal romances about three vampire brothers finding their brides. They’ve been described as “vampire romance for people who don’t like vampire romance.” (I know, it’s a head scratcher.)

In this book, Mikhail, the icy eldest Faustin, learns that in order to save his soul, he must marry or kill Alya Adad, the most notorious female vampire to be born in three hundred years. She will not hesitate to kill him to remain free. To make matters a little more angsty, they have a history. She was his first girlfriend.

This is the darkest and sexiest Faustin book by far. In fact, it’s so twisted and bloody that as I was writing, even I wasn’t sure from one moment to the next how they’d survive their courtship to see their happily ever after. ;)

(FYI: The books are technically freestanding, but the best order to read them in is 1. Bound by Blood, 2. Called by Blood and 3. Damned by Blood. Details on all three at my website: http://www.eviebyrne.com/books.html )

My book Wolfbreed was officially released on the 25th. It is a historical dark fantasy set during the Northern Crusade in 13th Century Prussia. A few relevant blurbs:

    Booklist:

Swann's exquisite werewolf historical brings the era vividly to life as the perfect setting for his conflicted, multidimensional characters. This may be the werewolf book of the year, for, filled with action, romance, gore, and political intrigue, it's a fresh, page-turning take on werewolf tropes that is not to be missed.

    Publisher's Weekly:

Religion and political intrigue turn an adolescent werewolf into a killing machine in this compelling novel of 13th-century Northern Europe. [...] Lilly's struggle to reconcile her split personalities-’cold assassin and lonely girl-’becomes a quest for redemption and love as she endures rape, amnesia and the knowledge of her own terrible actions in the church's service. Swann turns opposing viewpoints into sympathetic perspectives, clearly painting the complex political and religious dynamics of the time.

    George R.R. Martin

S.A. Swann has written a spellbinding fantasy of the Teutonic Knights and the great Northern Crusade, set in a little-known period of history amidst the gloomy forests of Prussia and Lithuania. Vivid and visceral, dark and delicious, this one kept me turning pages from start to finish.

    Mary Balogh

A mesmerizing story that entertained me thoroughly and moved me deeply. An exciting, non-stop action adventure involving the supernatural. More than that, though, it demonstrates how the human spirit, even when in a not-entirely-human body, can be transformed and redeemed by the power of love. I adored this book.

PS: Also has a kick ass cover :)

I have three things coming out this month. (three years of work came to fruition this year)

Yesterday, Curse of the Pharaoh’s Manicurists came out from Amber Quill’s Amber Allure line. (m/m with some m/f and menage a trois)

Edward Kilsby, Lord Withycombe, and Charlie Doyle, his secretary, travel from New York to London, Paris to Cairo and back again, by steamship, camel and Orient Express as they search for a missing archaeologist. Not mummies, nor jilted lovers, not malaria nor Anubis himself can stop their quest or their growing love for each other.

On Sept 21, Ellora’s Cavemen: Flavors of Ecstacy 3 comes out. Naomi Brooks and I have a story called “Cherry Tart.” It’s a classic stagecoach romance, in 1897, set on the ship to New Abilene on Io, the moon of Jupiter. (m/f)

Disgraced Chastity Millwood has been sent with her Aunt Prudence to emigrate to Io and spare the family reputation. Prudence plans to marry Chastity off very quickly. But Chastity has plans of her own, involving handsome junior officer, Ulysses Carter.

In mid-September, Circlet will release the third of their steampunk erotica books, Like a Corset Undone. Naomi and I have “Skyway Robbery,” a steampunk Robin Hood tale in that one. (m/m/f, full threeway)

He claims to be a direct descendent of Robin Hood, but this Robin has all the adventure he can handle between leading his airship, The Sherwood Forest, into battle against fat Edisonian ships and keeping the peace between his two jealous lovers, Marion the navigator and Will O’Hara, a Fenian sapper on the run.

    Turtle Soup Is Out!

Awe-struck Publishing has just released my short novel, Turtle Soup, for Fall. This sweet to sensual romance won last year’s short novel contest at Awe-struck and is my second book. The cover is really eye-catching–kudos to Awestruck’s new cover artist, Nikki Browning.

Sea turtles may be endangered but after an encounter with marine biologist, Jack Brandon, nothing will stop Sara Hart from naming her deli Turtle Soup.

When Jack takes a job at the nearby Georgia Aquarium, Sara finds the environmental poster boy at her door, hungry and carrying a chip on his shoulder.

Neither thinks the other has what it takes, until a scuba class reveals what lies beneath the surface. It will take food, friends, and a little help from Mother Nature, to help them see that making a difference isn't all numbers and glory.

    It must begin with love.

I’m on the front page at Awe-struck this upcoming week. You can find out more about Turtle Soup there! http://www.awe-struck.net

My paranormal M/M romance, “Afterthought”, comes out September 21st from Liquid Silver books. Info and excerpts are here.

    Here’s the blurb!

When you’re choosing between right and wrong, sometimes love is just an afterthought.

Telepath Vance Gregory never thought that taking down high-powered underworld Path Marcus Rose would be easy. When his enemy proves to be a far more formidable danger than Vance anticipates, he has no choice but to join forces with Ayan, a beautiful low-level Path with mysterious connections to Marcus.

Captured by Vance’s organization during a bungled ambush on Marcus, Ayan had no intention of helping them achieve their ends. But Vance isn’t like anyone he’s known. Given a glimpse of how life with him might be beyond the uncertain society they inhabit, Ayan agrees to Vance’s plans.

Neither of them expect the intense attraction, nor the explosive mental bond it forges. And when Ayan’s powers begin to spike out of control, neither of them want to face the unpredictable dangers that could tear them apart.

With Ayan at his side, Vance sets out to remove the threat Marcus poses to the Path community. But Marcus isn’t that easy to kill, and when Ayan turns out to be vital to Marcus’s continued existence, Vance has to choose between the enemy he hates or the man he loves.

Cabin Fever releases September 15th from Samhain. You can read an excerpt here, and drool over the cover model’s lovely belly here.

Wipe your mouth. Here’s the blurb:

Love isn't something she thinks she needs…until it lands right on her doorstep.

Genevieve Boden is a witch and doesn't care who knows. The townspeople's fear of her keeps away those who have hurt her before-’like the local men of authority. Besides, a life of exile deep in the woods of West Virginia is due punishment, she figures, for the part she played in her mother's death. If she's alone, no one need know that the trauma took away her powers.

Then she finds a bloody, fatally wounded man slumped on her porch. In an instant, her healing ability reawakens-’and that's not all. He stirs a hunger beyond her wildest dreams. But a relationship with the new chief of police? Not a chance.

Alex Rivera isn't sure how he survived, but he's certain his beautiful savior did more than just bandage his wounds. Captivated by this wary angel and stunned by the depth of emotion he feels for her, he vows to discover her secrets. After all, thanks to the raging snowstorm, they have nothing to do but share body heat.

Their sizzling attraction goes straight to their hearts. So could a killer's bullet…once whoever shot Alex finds them.

Warning: Contains a convenient snowstorm that throws together two wounded characters who happen to be wildly attracted to each other, a drool-worthy hero, a shotgun-toting heroine, mattress sex, shower sex, couch sex, armchair sex, some light bondage, and a really good cup of hot cocoa.

Thanks and if you read it, I hope you enjoy :).

My third installment in my Wed in the West series for Silhouette Special Edition is in stores now, as well as available in pretty much any e edition you can imagine.

The first book in the series, A MOTHER’S WISH, won the RITA this year for Best Series Romance…the first Special Edition to win a RITA since 1991. (My editor, the senior editor for SSE, was beside herself with glee. ;-))

Eli's Garrett's last encounter with Tess Montoya involved her chasing him down Main Street, wielding a sponge mop. Aimed at his head. Twelve years later, Tess is a next-door-to-bitter divorcee with a pair of little kids, and Eli's still a bachelor with – word has it – a baaaaad reputation for hooking up with anything with hooters. So naturally that makes him the perfect choice for a bout of drunken, angry sex, right?

Mortified after her wild ‘n' crazy night, all Tess wants to do is put her indiscretion behind her and resume her quiet, safe, uncomplicated life. Loving people has never ended well before, so why should it now? Especially with Eli? Except sometimes bad boys are “bad” for reasons the gossip mill never gets wind of. And sometimes a bad boy turns out to the be the best thing ever to happen to a gal who's given up on love.

Especially if that bad boy has marriage and family on his mind…

Mercenary’s Promise is released in September. It’s the second book in my Silhouette Romantic Suspense Mercenary series. The hero is Xavier–the rebel leader from the Mercenary’s Honor book. This story also takes place in Colombia and deals with FARC (a terrorist group in Colombia, South America) and the rescue of the heroines sister.

Oddly enough, while I was writing the book, the company I was working for had three men rescued from FARC in a very Hollywood type of rescue. They'd been held hostage for over six years, and to walk into work and find they were free? There are no words…

    Blurb:
Wilderness guide Bethany Darrow was desperate to save her kidnapped sister in Colombia, but lying about having the money to pay dark, mysterious mercenary Xavier Monero would cost her dearly. Especially when their forced proximity during a dangerous jungle rescue unleashed a smoldering, irresistible attraction.

Xavier knew the beautiful American was trouble the second he laid his eyes on her. Taking Bethany on the mission was a risk, and he wasn’t prepared for the peril she placed on his heart. Suddenly he wanted more than fortune-’he wanted Bethany, body and soul. But everything comes with a price….

    RT Review 4.0:
This terrific, action-packed story is full of tension, surprises, and a duo that sets sparks flying.

My debut paranormal romance, Drawn into Darkness, releases September 1st from Signet Eclipse. It’s the first book in a series about immortal Soul Gatherers who battle demons for the souls of the dead. It was also the 2008 Golden Heart winner for Best Paranormal Romance (under the title Soul Provider).

For centuries Lachlan MacGregor has battled demon thieves for the souls of the dead, carrying out his pledge to deliver them into Heaven or Hell. But his greatest challenge as a Soul Gatherer is now among the living.

Struggling to connect with her troubled teenage daughter, Emily, artist Rachel Lewis turns to her enigmatic yet strangely compelling neighbor Lachlan for advice. As Lachlan soon discovers, the young girl has fallen victim to a seductive demon-’a specter from the past using the unsuspecting women to fulfill an ancient prophecy and settle a hellish score with Lachlan himself.

In the race to save Emily and avert a disastrous power shift among the deities, Rachel and Lachlan forge an uncommon bond. But how can Lachlan tell the mortal woman he's falling in love with that the next soul he's been enlisted to gather-’and deliver beyond-’is her daughter's?

RT Book Club gave it 4 1/2 stars: “…a fabulously entertaining tale of demons, angels and beings in between.”

Publisher’s Weekly said: “Swords flash, spells are cast, and twist and turns come head-spinningly quickly… Readers will hope for sequels…

A Hearing Heart releases on Labor Day from Liquid Silver Books.

The heart conveys messages beyond what ears can hear.

After the death of her fiancé, Catherine Johnson, a New York schoolteacher in 1902, travels to Nebraska to teach in a one-room school and escape her sad memories. One afternoon, violence erupts in the sleepy town. Catherine saves deaf stable hand, Jim Kinney from torture by drunken thugs.

As she takes charge of his education, teaching him to read and sign, attraction grows between them. The warmth and humor in this silent man transcends the need for speech and his eyes tell her all she needs to know about his feelings for her. But the obstacles of class difference and the stigma of his handicap are almost insurmountable barriers to their growing attachment.

Will Catherine flaunt society's rules and allow herself to love again? Can Jim make his way out of poverty as a deaf man in a hearing world? And together will they beat the corrupt robber baron who has a stranglehold on the town?

Romance, love and sensuality abound in this jam-packed, old-fashioned tale with plenty of heart and some steaming hot sex.

My debut novel, SERENDIPITY HOUSE, was just released by Wild Child Publishing on Sept. 1. Please visit and read excerpt. For now, here is a brief blurb:

Sylvie Gardner was a pleaser. She did as her mother pleased, and she did as her fiancé pleased. Then she did as she pleased. Raised by a domineering mother, Sylvie doesn't like the submissive woman she's become. Determined to take back her life, she heads to the hills instead of to the altar on her wedding day. Coming across a quaint, country inn with an intriguing name, she impulsively checks into SERENDIPITY HOUSE. Peopled with an odd assortment of characters, the inn has clearly seen better days. Even the regulars have a bit of wear on them. Thus, when debonair Alex Clemenceau arrives and is strangely comfortable vacationing among the geriatric set, Sylvie is suspicious and does her best to ignore him. But Alex will not be ignored, pushing her buttons until she admits, if only to herself that she's falling in love with him. Not until she's hired to manage the inn does she learn he's not the pedigreed gentleman he purports to be, but a streetwise PI hired by her ex to find her. Adding insult to injury, he's bought the inn and asks for her help in restoring it to its former glory. Forced to work together, both learn about relationships, expectations, and acceptance-’among family members as well as strangers who become like family.

My UK publishers, Allison & Busby, are re-issuing my book The Shadowy Horses on September 7th.

With its dark legends and passionate history, the windswept shores of Scotland are an archaeologist’s dream. Verity Grey is thrilled by the challenge of uncovering an ancient Roman campsite in a small Scottish village. But as soon as she arrives, she senses danger in the air. Her eccentric boss, Peter Quinnell, has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he’s finally found it – not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has ‘seen’ a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades. Surprisingly, Verity believes in Peter, and the boy, and even in the Sentinel, who seems determined to become her own protector…but from what?

You can see the new cover and read the first chapter at my web site, and if you’re not in the UK the Book Depository ships worldwide for free.
