Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo)

What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus. I thought we would test out an open thread here at Dear Author.     The rules for Author Promo Open Thread are as follows:

  • The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of October would be a November release)
  • You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
  • No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
  • Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
  • This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
  • DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

That’s it. Post away.

I hope this is on-topic since it’s not about a specific book but it is author promo. A small group of NAL Signet authors have banded together to sing/blog the praises of darker side romances in all the subgenres. Last week, we talked about dark heroes. This week, an even darker topic: Deadlines. We meet at:

This is what PNR’s Katherine Petersen says about RUNNING WILD:
Betts has crafted a wonderful tale of action, intrigue, battles and passion. This is one of the best erotic paranormal romances I’ve read in a long time. Running Wild is a page-turner and a must read for lovers of erotic romance. The only bad thing is the return to reality after the last page.

Josh Lanyon, author of the Adrien English Mystery series, and I have collaborated –the first time for either of us– on a new crime series in the M/M erotic romance genre called Crimes & Cocktails. The first book was released last week titled MEXICAN HEAT. The series features a hero with, eventually, a disability that is permanent. It is available in print from MLR Press now and will be available in ebook format in February 2009 from Samhain Publishing.

M/M Erotic Romance Crime/Mystery series. Action, adventure, drug cartels, lust, danger and in the end — romance. One book in the series will be released each year.

Death and the Demon, a paranormal novella, is available at Liquid Silver Books. Warning: Includes explicit sex of the m/f and m/m variety, bondage, and – bonus! – a plot.

The identical triplets Phineas, Philippe, and Phoenix are three evil peas in a pod – except for what’s under their jeans. Boxers, briefs, commando: it’s the only way to tell them apart. That, and the distinctive tattoos on their asses. One woman is determined to sort them out and claim the demon of her desire. If it means she’s got to get them all naked – hey, life’s hard.

I’ll be asking Jane to put sample chapters on her bookshelf, and I’ve written about the inspiration for Death and the Demon on the LSB blog, Silver Expressions.

And coming soon: a free read. Some of you were kind enough to comment on the query letter for Minotaur.

The book's been re-titled A Minotaur's Tale, and I'm going to be posting chapters on Authonomy (HarperCollins' electronic slush pile, if you haven't heard of it). Because of the adult comment, you may have to register to read the book.

Empath is available now at Samhain.

A gift or a curse? Jordan Langley's every touch of other human beings transmits their deepest feelings to him. Detective Lauren Sadler blocks her emotions so she can do her job. When a murder case brings them together, will Lauren yield to the power of the most intimate exchange she's ever known?

For nearly two years, Jordan has lived like a hermit, avoiding the world that affects him too deeply. He had spent his life dealing with his “gift” of empathy until a traumatic event drove him into seclusion. Now a friend needs his help to reach an autistic boy who has witnessed a murder.

Lauren Sadler, the detective on the case, believes in Jordan's ability after seeing the results of his touch on the boy. She doesn't count on how that touch will influence her. In the midst of the investigation, the couple shares a passionate night. But Lauren's not ready to open up to deep intimacy when her trust in herself has been shattered.

Solving the murder and coming to terms with love will challenge them both, bringing each to a new awareness of what they have to offer each other and the world.

Karen Scott’s Blog, Reviewer Azteclady, 7.5 of 10
“The sexual pull (of the main characters) is stronger than their fears, but is it strong enough to build a relationship on? Is the emotional vulnerability worth the potential joy? Of course these are not original questions, but staples in romance-’and in literature. Ms Dee manages to make them fresh for me.”

    Mrs. Giggles Reviews, 90
“He (the hero) doesn’t wallow in self-pity, he tries to take steps to live a life that is as normal as possible, so this doesn’t make him an emo martyr to me. Instead, he’s a darling tortured hero who wears shining armor. Lauren is a good heroine too. Her job fast makes her cynical about people, but she doesn’t let that turn her into a whiny idiot. She and Jordan are two of a kind in that both of them are afraid of getting close to other people.”

I have a new gay Regency novella released on Saturday 11th by Linden Bay Romance. It’s already had a great review from Romance at Heart Magazine

    “Frost Fair”

    London 1814

In February of 1814, Gideon Frost is a proud man barely clinging to respectability. Unable to make enough as a printer to earn money for food or heat, and hopelessly in love with Joshua Redfern, who all-too-infrequently purchases his engravings, Gideon sometimes resorts to a spot of prostitution to pay the bills. When the Thames freezes over and London holds what will be its last frost fair on the ice, Gideon, like countless tradesmen, takes the opportunity to move his shop onto the frozen river, hoping that the fair will earn him enough to save him from looming bankruptcy–not realizing that malicious, acquisitive eyes are watching

When disaster strikes, Redfern offers him a position within his household. But when Gideon leaves his life of hardship behind him, he discovers that desire and delight can co-exist with the most terrible doubt…and that some prices are perhaps too high to pay.

I have a new release on Wednesday from Ellora’s Cave, and I know a lot of people have been waiting for this one, because they’ve contacted me about it.
“Moonfire” is the story of Jake Keys, bass player for rock band Pure Wildfire and a firebird shape-shifter. When he discovers his estranged wife has been murdered, suspicion falls on her business partner, Teri Gilpatrick. Trouble is, the minute Jake sees her his telepathy tells him she didn’t do it. But the courts don’t take telepathy as a defence. At least not yet. And Jake is attracted to Teri like to no other woman he’s ever met before.

I loved writing this one, and I hope the readers enjoy it, too.

I am thrilled to announce that my latest book MADMAN’S DANCE, the third in the Time Rovers Series, debuted October 30th. This time travel/shapeshifter series is set in Victorian London and features a Time Rover named Jacynda Lassiter. Jacynda’s job is to retrieve missing “time tourists” and her routine trip to the East End in 1888 has landed her in the middle of Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror. With two dashing Victorian gents at her side, Jacynda has had to confront scheming anarchists, meddling time travelers and mysterious shape-shifters who can look like anyone they choose.

But Jacynda’s greatest challenge lies ahead: a stolen cache of explosives is destined to ignite the biggest conflagration since the Great Fire of 1666 and only Jacynda and her friends can save the heart of the British Empire. But first, she has to escape the insane asylum. And remember her name.

Reader Advisory: This is one of those series you have to read in order as they are complex and multi-layered.

My third novella, Illicit Bargain, just released form Ellora’s Cave. It’s the naughtiest tale I’ve penned yet. I had so much fun with the, um, research. Yes! Research…

    Some lovely blurbage:

When her fragile teenaged sister is held for ransom by a sociopathic sorcerer, Celia Ladrón, a witch and professional thief, is forced to steal a topaz dagger from Evi Leshnikov, a reclusive shapeshifter and old acquaintance.

Before she can escape with the dagger, Celia is caught by Evi. Incensed, he offers harsh terms -’ submit to his darkest desires or leave empty-handed. Desperate to save her sister, Celia agrees, unaware the erotic test of wills may break her -’ body and soul.

In the end, however, it just might be Evi who is humbled.

Liam’s Gold was released from Samhain on November 4.

Sal Winter, a computer tech, has lived next door to Liam for years. They're friends-’just not that kind of friends. Sal wishes it could be more, but she's come to accept Liam will never want anything from her except her computer skills.

As for Liam, he's a leprechaun in disguise who has no intention of granting anyone's wish except his own: to taste the delights of one Miss Salvia Rose Winter before his sojourn in humanspace comes to an end. Sal possesses a gene that gives her the power to detect leprechauns. The closer Liam sticks to Sal, the greater the risk-’and the better his cover, which is becoming critical as his time in humanspace runs short.

Time isn't the only thing running short for Liam. A nemesis from the Realm is bearing down on him, determined to do anything to prevent his return to their homeland. Including murder the woman he's only just realized he loves.

Warning: This book contains bad leprechaun jokes, worse leprechaun behavior, great leprechaun sex, and absolutely no little bearded men in green coats.

Set in Alaska, Sleeping Bears Lie is a story about how lying to keep secrets can screw things up, but then, so can telling the truth. It’s about identity, and what it means to know someone, and if you need to know someone’s history to love them in the present. It’s about a relationship that’s not easy, but might be worth it anyway.

In 2007 Sleeping Bears Lie was shortlisted for the Gaylactic Spectrum Awards, just after the anthology it was in went out of print. Since then the story’s been extended – it’s now about one-third new material – and it’s just been published as a stand-alone short novella.

    “Mucho Caliente!”

Wishing upon a Latino superstar is bound to end in tears. But when destiny insists on playing matchmaker, what's a girl to do?

Thirty-seven year old Gemma hadn't reckoned on being seated next to Latino heartthrob Emilio Caliente on the flight to Ibiza. She'd bravely dismissed her cheating husband's generous divorce settlement, opting instead for a creatively satisfying, financially independent, bohemian lifestyle on a Spanish island in the sun. Falling in love with a pop music superstar eight years her junior was definitely not part of her plan. Common sense dictates staying away from Emilio Caliente and his cinnamon kisses: his life is in turmoil, his latest single has bombed, the press want to see him naked and his hellacious manager seems increasingly deranged. But surely the chain of extraordinary events that insists on bringing them together is proof that love is oblivious to common sense? Does Gemma dare follow her heart and wish upon a pop star without undermining everything else she set out to achieve?

“Mucho Caliente!” is an effervescent, romantic comedy newly available from BookStrand at http://www.bookstrand.com/product-muchocaliente-13914-330.html

The third book in my award winning epic fantasy romance series The Asphodel Cycle will be released by Aspen Mountain Press on November 28. Temptation of Asphodel picks up the story of Tamsen de Asphodel and Brial Ka’breona as they use their love to save their world.

Tamsen has learned to sacrifice everything as she plays the game of the gods, but as she nears the end of her quest everything changes again. The hunter becomes the hunted, the ally becomes the foe and behind it all lies the hand of a third, unknown god who tries to lure her from her destiny. Can she hold firm against the temptations that are thrown in her path, or will she fall into failure as generations of Elves have done before her? As the rumbling memory of an ancient war settles over the realm of Ansienne, Tamsen's faith falters. When she is drawn into conflict with immortal enemies, she discovers that the line between obedience and temptation is much narrower than she thought. Temptation is dangerous, but obedience can kill.

You can find out more about The Asphodel Cycle 3: Temptation of Asphodel at Elf Killing and Other Hobbies or read the prologue at Shoot The Muse! The prequels, The Reckoning of Asphodel and The Gift of Redemption are available through Aspen Mountain Press and most major online retailers.

My debut novel BROKEN WING was a November 1st release in the United States and will be available December 1st in Canada. Laura Leone, author of FALLEN FROM GRACE says. “Judith James' rich prose and witty, articulate dialogue enhance this story of a complex man, bitterly wounded by life, who finds self-worth through love. A fresh and passionate tale, Broken Wing enchants the reader with original characters and a compelling romance set against the colorful tapestry of England, France, and North Africa in the turbulent years of Napoleon’s rise to power. ”

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY says “The Napoleonic era comes brilliantly alive in James’s debut adventure romance. The pace never falters… The extensive historical detail goes a long way, but Sarah and Gabriel’s heart-wrenching struggle to keep their love alive is what will really keep readers entranced throughout this epic read.”

BROKEN WING is a November HISTORICAL NOVELS REVIEW EDITOR'S CHOICE “When I think of what constitutes a superior historical romance, I think of real characters connecting on many levels with a believable setting that pulls me into the story and sweeps me along into another place and time. Judith James's novel Broken Wing is such a tale; I was hooked from the first pages and found myself sighing with satisfaction at the end… I found there was much to love about this story of two star-crossed lovers finding one another…superior reading indeed.”

You can read Romance Novel TV's 5+ Stars review at http://www.romancenovel.tv/wordpress/2008/11/07/broken-wing-by-judith-james/

BROKEN WING is published through and independent press and doesn't have a NY size print run, so it might take some effort to find. It also may be too dark and edgy for some readers, and it may not appeal to those looking for a lighter read, but those who like raw-edged emotion and intense romance, spiced with high adventure, exotic locales, and an extra dollop of history, will I hope, be in for a treat. Well, I’m usually a lurker here, but this thread brought me out of hiding. The Shining One was published on October 29 by Liquid Silver. You can read the blurb and an excerpt here. (I hope that worked. I do not have html fu.)

Oh, and I put another excerpt on the Liquid Silver blog. Here’s the post.

The Shining One is a fantasy romance set it a world that was originally inspired by Greek mythology, although I’d like to think it went in a fairly unique direction from there. It’s also my first major publication. I hope to write more in that universe but The Shining One is a stand-alone story.

Hi! And thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I, too, have been mostly a lurker here–but I’m excited to be able to talk about my new book, KISSING GAMES OF THE WORLD, which is a contemporary romance, published on November 4, by Crown.

My previous books have been classified as “women’s fiction”–and are about creating families, but with this book, I knew I wanted to write a love story that would be a funny, poignant exploration of the ways in which relationships come to us when we least expect them…and how even the most screwed-up, stubborn people can learn to find their true selves in someone else.

KISSING GAMES OF THE WORLD is told from two points of view: the chapters alternate between Jamie, a single mom/artist who is raising her asthmatic little boy in a farmhouse she shares with her landlord, an older man who is raising his grandson…and Nate, the old man’s son who has to come back to claim his little boy when his father drops dead suddenly of a heart attack. Publishers Weekly called the book “an absolute treat…filled with realistic twists, complex characters and a moving conclusion” and said that it “elevates the oft-told stories of opposites attracting and songs struggling against their fathers.”

And Romantic Times gave it 4 1/2 stars and said it was a “warm, sentimental love story…told with a tenderness of heart and a nurturing eye guiding complexly drawn characters. She effortlessly melds love and loss with heartrending care, exposing the layers of a budding romance with a deft hand. It’s full of humor, flaws and togetherness of spirit fit for any modern love story where family is what you make it.”

Library Journal gave it a starred review and called it an “engrossing, charming, and often funny exploration of love and the relationships that result. Though the slow building and complicated relationship between Jamie and Nate plays a role in the story, it is the relationship between Nate and his son and Nate and his deceased father that allow the author to explore love in all its different incarnations.”

Detective Jason Dodd kissed mystery writer Sue Finley. The kind of kiss that makes a girl melt into her panties. Then he gave her that chicken-shit grin that bad boys are so good at delivering, and said those famous words, “I'll call you.” But the two-bit-no-good-for nothing piece of poo didn't call. And she waited, wanted, and then she finally just got pissed off. No one checks out her tonsils like that and doesn't call! Truth is no one has checked out her tonsils for a long time. Her divorce pretty much left her heart feeling like chicken liver that has been run through a Cuisinard. Twice.

Now, when her life couldn't get more complicated, when Sue's got a stalker sending her dead rats, a boyfriend whose kisses leave her panties powder-puff dry, (but hey, at least he calls), a mother whose dog won't stop sniffing everyone's crotch and is dating an Elvis impersonator, (her mom is dating Elvis, not the dog) and Jason, good cop/bad boy, saunters back into her life insisting she can lean on him.

Right! Okay, truth is, she might trust him with her life, but can she trust him with her heart? Oh, heck no! But who says she can't have a little fun making him wish he'd called her back?

Divorced, Desperate and Dating is my third humorous Romantic Suspense and my second novel in the Divorced & Desperate Series. My second novel, Weddings Can Be Murder, has just been nominated for a RT Reviewers Choice award. And wow, I'm in the running with some REAL writers. I'm so honored and scared shitless that someone is going to tell me it was just a typo.

Come check out my blog tomorrow at Killer Fiction: http://killerfictionwriters.blogspot.com for a chance to win some prizes. Go to my website, http://www.christie-craig.com to check out my book videos.

Thanks for the opportunity to tell you about my book. And everyone have a very, merry Christmas.
