REVIEW: No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole
Summary: Kaderin the Coldhearted lives to kill vampires. Sebastian Wroth was turned against his will and longs to die. They meet and discover that Kaderin is his blood bride. Kaderin resists. The annual Hie is starting (the paranormal answer to the Amazing Race). She’s got a prize to win and isn’t interested. Okay, she’s a little interested. The pace is fast and enjoyable until the end when the sugary ending almost ruins it. If you didn’t like the first one, you aren’t going to like this one. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one. Since Cole made it onto the USA Today Bestseller list for the first one, I am guessing this will be just as successful.

Oh my god. I will be getting this anyway (liked the first a whole bunch) but her boobs in those running scenes would have sold me on it if I hadn’t been.

I love the vampire chasing the bride pictures. Kicky tune too! This makes me want to read this, sugary ending and all. Now I just have to get past my prejudice against the 80s metal (or perhaps Cher?) video cover.

I’m thinking of doing one a month. I first have to nag poor Ned into drawing the pictures which takes a week of nagging and an hour of drawing.

I would have bought this one with or without the video review (I loved the first book in this series, despite its cheesy, over-the-top retro vibe), but the perfect combination of that Dixie Chicks song and the drawings has made me downright anxious (luckily I preordered from Amazon). My two favorite pictures are the one of the sad Sebastian and the one where he’s chasing Kalderin, his cape fluttering behind him and her perky boobs propelling her forward. Genius.

Although I’ve barely had time to read anything fun lately, I did finish this one this weekend, and enjoyed it even more than A Hunger Like No Other. Kaderin was uninteresting to me in the first book, but I loved the way she and Sebastian worked as a couple in this one. How great was it to have a jaded hero who has far less sexual experience than the heroine for once? And how difficult is it to love a vampire who admires his woman’s brains as much as here other, uh, assets? Plus some amusing riffs on the old “strong boy saves frail girl” archetype; I really do appreciate it when an author shakes that one up. I especially liked the scene where Kaderin explains to Sebastian how his attempts to save her all the time have actually put her at a disadvantage because she’s had to change her game play.
This is the kind of book that I know I could find a ton of stuff wrong with if I paid close enough attention, but the storytelling is strong enough that I forgive it its sins. And I think the writing is stronger with this one, too, although the way Cole sometimes shifts subject, object, and/or POV in an attempt to mimic the authentic disconnection among thoughts is confusing. I also felt there was a little more emotional heft to the characters in this one, even if the resolution seemed, rushed, superificial, and, as you pointed out, Jane, sweet as high fructose corn syrup. While I felt like what’s-his-face’s emotions were cartoonishly over the top in A Hunger Like No Other, I think Cole did a good job chronicling the way Sebastian and Kaderin come back to life — and the adjustments each much make to some unwanted changes. This one didn’t feel quite as shallow as the last book, to me, and maybe because of that it was more fun, IMO.

Robin – you make a good point that the role reversal was very refreshing. I should have included that in the video review as I think it could have made for a funny slide. I definitely enjoy Cole’s books. They are very entertaining. I would recommend you try out her historical – If You Desire. I reviewed it here at DearAuthor and it is available at SimonSays for under $4.00. I would be interested in hearing what you thought about it.

Jane, I ordered If You Dare from Simon Says, but they haven’t delivered it to me. It says it’s in my digital library for download, but the dowload link doesn’t appear, and my account keeps saying “processing” (and I can’t cancel). IF I ever get the book (love how you have to give 3-5 days for an answer to an account question), I’ll definitely read it. Thanks for the recommendation.

I love K.Cole new IAD. But I’m also one particular hell of a reader that could spot a mistake easily , WHICH I realized no one noticed or perhaps so engrossed with the broad picture of the story that they did not realized the major mistake of the geography.
I’m in no way belittling the author’s intelligence but a careless mistake could be rather costly though it might not be in dollar and sense term.
What I found was the author had claimed Gobi Desert was located in Africa on the 11th day of the HIE Competition, which was wrong. The said place is located in Mongolia, which is a part of China.
I hope the author and her team of editor would be more careful in their future editing as this would cause some serious embarrassment on their part when a particular place was ‘guessed’ wrongly.

Ok just asking the authour… even though highly doubted just to answer my lone questions when so many others share a view and opinion and seeking you to answer. But i am asking more rather wondering when is the next installment or rather what is it … i dont know if has been published or not or even if it is created or will it. Maybe i missread but i thought there was more… o well answers would be kind. cheers

The next one is due out in Halloween 2007. It’s called Wicked Deeds on Winter Night. There were two previous stories, an anthology in Playing Easy to Get and a single title, A Hunger Like No Other.
She also has other books from Pocket: The Maccarrick series, If You Dare, If You Desire, and If You Deceive.
