Author Promo Thread, January 2009 Edition

Are you an author with a January 2009 release (this includes anyone who was released in late December as well).   Tell the readers all about it.   Include a blurb! an excerpt link! a buy link!   anything that you think will help a reader be a) interested in your work and b) buy it.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

• The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of April would be a May release)
• You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
• No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
• Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
• This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
• DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

That’s it. Post away.

Thanks so much for providing this forum, Jane! January is a very exciting month for me– I have not one, but two books coming out this month, and a Special Bonus Novella, available for free on my website.

In The Seduction of the Crimson Rose (on shelves in paperback!) two unlikely cynics team up in Napoleonic era London to track down that deadly French spy, the Black Tulip. For an excerpt, click here.

In The Temptation of the Night Jasmine (coming out January 22nd) a lady in waiting to Queen Charlotte finds herself plunged into a deadly game of intrigue involving the Hellfire Club, the madness of King George, and a hero who might not be all that heroic– or is he?

Both The Seduction of the Crimson Rose and The Temptation of the Night Jasmine were Romantic Times top picks, and Crimson Rose was just nominated for an RT Reviewers Choice award!

Also available now, I’ve written an Entirely Gratuitous Bonus Novella (hey, we all get bored sometimes), which I’ve been posting in serial form on my website,, as a very belated holiday gift to my readers. The first three chapters are already up and running, so pop by and check them out if you have a chance!

Thanks for letting me babble on about the books!

The King's Daughter
by MC Halliday

In a medieval Eire where the Druid legacy survives, the bartered daughter of a clan king struggles in a web of dark spells to save herself ~ and her beloved knight ~ while under the watchful eye of a lough wizard.

My hybrid Fantasy Romance from Samhain Publishing, released in trade paperback December 30th. It’s also available in a variety of eBook formats and Kindle.

Janet has this on her TBR list and when she has time, will be posting a review at Dear Author. So for now, I’ll mention TKD was awarded SRR’s OUTSTANDING READ and 5/5 Roses from RRfA.

For a heads up, The King’s Daughter contains several explicit encounters and some rather compromising situations but it isn’t erotica, although it has been categorised as such at two eBook shops.

Wishing everyone a wonderful 2009!

My last spam of this particular book, but hopefully not the last for the author, since the other books will also be reissued by BAEN. And in the interest of not cluttering up the site I shall simply link to my comment in the anticipated book list earlier.

I am speaking of course of P.C. Hodgell’s Godstalker Chronicles, out this month from BAEN in hardcover and trade paperback.

That comment has links to the books on Amazon as well as to the ebook version and a description from the ebook website of BAEN.

Excerpt from the first chapter in the first book of the omnibus, God Stalk.
Excerpt from the first chapter of the second book in the omnibus, Dark of the Moon

This is one continuing saga, so the second excerpt might not make much sense without reading the first book ^^..

I appreciate the opportunity to announce that Sneak Peek is coming to print from Samhain Publishing in January. It’s the combination of my novella, Show Me, and Shelley Bradley’s novella, Watch Me.

A secret club, forbidden indulgences. Come inside and take a peek…if you dare.

WATCH ME by Shelley Bradley: Shanna is set to become a ballroom champion until her partner tangles with scandal. She needs Alejandro, the gorgeous sex club owner, to identify the blackmailer, not tempt her. But maybe forbidden passion and undeniable love is exactly what she needs.

SHOW ME by Jaci Burton: Janine's socialite lifestyle is above reproach. When Del invites her to indulge her fantasy of voyeurs and exhibitionists, Janine agrees. She transforms into a daring, passionate lover. But when her reputation is jeopardized, Del must prove that loving him is worth the risk.

Thank you–appreciate the opportunity.
Book 5 in my Otherworld (aka Sisters of the Moon) Series releases tomorrow.
Rated: (*some*–not a great deal–explicit/graphic sex, violence, monsters, & cute little baby calico gargoyles. Well, one cute little baby calico gargoyle).

Night Huntress by Yasmine Galenorn
Berkley (Mass Market); January 6th 2009
Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance (not an HEA type of book)
ISBN: 9780425225462

Ever wonder if the monsters under your bed are real…
We’re the D’Artigo sisters: sexy, savvy operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But being half-human, half-Fae means our supernatural talents always go haywire at the wrong time. My sister Camille is a wicked good witch who attracts men like honey attracts flies. Menolly’s a vampire who’s still getting the hang of being undead. And me? I’m Delilah, a werecat who’s been marked by the Autumn Lord as one of his Death Maidens. And wouldn’t you know it, Karvanak–the demon general who stole the third Spirit Seal–is back. And this time, he’s out for blood…

The Hags of Fate enjoy seeing me squirm. First, my boyfriend, Chase, mutters another woman’s name in his sleep. Then I discover the Autumn Lord has a very special plan for me. But things go from bad to deadly when Karvanak–the Rāksasa–returns. In order to get his greedy hands on both the fourth Spirit Seal and his former associate, Vanzir, he kidnaps Chase. Now, we have to find a way to rescue the man I love without risking the safety of both Otherworld and Earth…

Available at, and a bookstore near you.

Common Questions:
1. Should I read the prior books first? It helps, especially to have read the first three, but people do start in later in the series now without much of a problem.
2. Are these romance or not? Well, my publisher thinks so. There are sex and relationships in the books, and they do have a prominent part, but the focus is on the story arc of the sisters and their mission. The end isn’t going to give you the picket fence, happily ever after, 2.5 kids and a minivan. ;) And the romance is some times alternative–poly, bi/gay, hetero, you name it, I’ve probably got it in there.
3. Are the sisters ripped off from Charmed? Nope–never watched an episode of the show. I was a Buffy girl. (Yeah, I get that question a lot and just don’t get it ~grins~).

Again, thanks for the opportunity to remind people about new books coming out!

January 1, my “choose your own romance” novella from Red Sage Publishing became available. It’s under my pen name Ellie Marvel.

Yep. You read that right! It’s a throwback to the 80’s heyday of gamebooks–only it’s for adults. It’s called “Megan’s Choice”, an erotic futuristic romp.

Megan Malone, the quadrant's fastest zip ship pilot, is overworked, overtired and craves the surf, sun and sex of a paradise planet vacation. When her employer receives an urgent commission from the government requesting Megan's services on a diplomatic mission, she's all set to refuse–especially when she finds out her domineering ex-lover Yusef Gunnen will be part of that mission. But what Megan doesn't know is that she's no longer calling her own shots. You are calling the shots. And what you decide Megan will do at the end of each episode will change her life forever.

Thanks so much for this opportunity to introduce my recent 31 Dec release, Cat Burglar. Cat Burglar is book six in my Middlemarch Mates series, and can be read alone or enjoyed as part of the series about feline shapeshifters living in the small New Zealand town of Middlemarch.

Laura Adams is a cop with ambition, and a job in Middlemarch isn't what she wants for her future. Hooking up with the wrong man is responsible for the wrong turning, and she refuses to repeat the mistake, especially with a sexy thief.

Leopard shifter Jonno Campbell takes one look at Laura and desires her as his mate. He's enthralled with the fiery cop, and when she arrests him, he's ready for a strip search. Convincing Laura he's innocent and that they should work together to capture the thieves stealing from Middlemarch residents isn't easy. A kiss laced with his easy charm does the trick and sparks fly. Passion escalates into primitive hunger. A night of hot loving convinces Jonno. He wants forever with the gorgeous Laura, but her ambition, his feline heritage and a gang of thieves stand in the way of his progress. Then there's the ex-boyfriend who wants Laura back. This time charisma and erotic promises might not be enough to win the lady.

I just had a new short story released, In the Driver’s Seat. 13 pages, $1.29.

Brian is used to being in control in the bedroom, but somehow he’s found himself without anyone to play with. Then he runs into recently-returned — and surprisingly grown-up — Val, who he knew years before as a cute high-school kid. Val’s not a high-school kid anymore, though, and there’s an air about him that says he’s been around and has had a few lessons in the bedroom.

Brian’s eager to provide some advanced schooling, but his assumptions end up getting him into trouble. To his own surprise, he finds it’s a kind of trouble he’s not all that eager to escape.

Crossing Swords by Kirsten Saell

One duel. Easy money. Then Gil fell for his opponent.

A straight duel to the death. A professional opponent who's paying him to win. This was going to be the easiest money Gil had ever earned. Except he never counted on his opponent being a woman. And he never counted on falling for her.

After avenging the brutal murder of her lover, all Lianon wants is to die a clean death. Too bad the man she hired doesn't do women, and he's furious over her deception. Not only does he renege on their contract, he has the gall to lock her up in his apartment-‘naked, no less!-‘to punish her for her ruse.

If she could just get her mind out of the gutter, she'd cut him a new smile. But ever since he saw through her boy's clothes, all she can think about is getting him naked, too.

But just when she's found something to live for, the father of her lover's murderer surfaces. He wants Lianon to die screaming-‘and he's all too happy to take Gil down with her.

Thanks for the opportunity to post about new work, Jane.

I closed out the year with one last release at the end of December, a new novella with Freya’s Bower called Poor Boy.

All his life, Roy has had things easy; born to money and privilege, he’s a grown man before he realizes how his father’s money has bought his privilege off the backs and tragedies of too many people. Now he’s on his own and making his way in the world might be a lot harder than he thought.

When he meets street hustler, Scooby, he falls, hard and fast, not wanting to believe the possibility Scooby is one of the unfortunates his family has stepped over to get their way. As young and fragile as Scooby seems, he might be the only one strong enough to save Roy from himself.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to promo! My newest print title, Lessons Learned, is now available from Samhain Publishing. This book is a two-fer — two connected category-length novels — and both are available as e-books as well. Here’s the scoop:

Two royal siblings. Two regular Americans. When love comes to Laurivenia, no heart is safe…

Lessons in Love – Hungry for adventure, Brynn takes a teaching job in a foreign country. But on arrival she discovers she’s the new royal nanny instead. Prince Alex is tired of women feigning interest in his daughter to get close to him. So if he fudged the details of the job to protect his child, who can blame him? His plans unravel the moment Brynn appears. Beautiful and free spirited, she’s nothing like the nanny he expected. Can the prince and the nanny find common ground?

Lessons in Trust – Princess Lucia’s new bodyguard refuses to play by the rules. His insistence on shadowing her 24/7 is cramping her style. He needs to go before the sparks between them get too hot. But he won’t leave until the threat against her is neutralized. Eric spirits her away to a safe house where passion ignites, leaving them shaken. They must work together before Lucia’s safety–and their connection–are lost forever.

Romantic Times magazine gave the book 4 1/2 stars and said: “Goodnight offers a unique story with extra-special characters and genuine heat.”

I’m very excited about this latest book, a deeply emotional, intense story of a shattered woman and the former Army Ranger who pushes his way into her reclusive Rocky Mountain existence. Toss in a couple of endearing search and rescue dogs, a bad guy, and a lot of snow for a book that I think you’ll enjoy.

And the cover is beautiful!! Take a look and let me know what you think.

Blue Gold out now!
Here’s the opening of my mainstream historical romance, BLUE GOLD, an epic adventure romance set in ancient Egypt and featuring the pyramids, the Egyptian gods, two pharaohs, spirits, dangerous princesses and a priest who needs to learn about women.
More details, the blurb, other excerpts and the cover link are here:

As a cat may eat its own kits, so a woman in ancient Egypt was recognized as having the right to kill any new-born infant she did not wish to raise. Yet, to appease the dead, it was the custom that a baby-killer should hold the dead child for three days and nights.

* * * *

The guards put her with the whores, the drunkards, the killers. They were sent into the courtroom seven at a time. She was the last in the third batch.
“Name?” demanded the court scribe and scraped her answer across the papyrus.
“Why are you here?” asked the mayor of her village, the father of her former lover.
Silently, making the action almost an accusation, the woman held up the bundle in her arms to the four judges. She had not been able to bury it before the village guards had caught her.
“A nine-day-old boy,” noted the scribe. “A baby murdered by its mother.”
The woman said nothing: it was all true.
The judges bent their heads together, although in such cases custom demanded only one punishment. The mayor rose and bowed his head in the direction of the shrine set at the back of the courtroom. Then he spat.
“Take her to the riverbank, along with the other baby-killers. Let them all sweat outside, where everyone can see what they have done.” He jerked his hand. “Drag her away. She stinks.”

Best wishes, Lindsay
