April Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo)

This is our Author Promo Thread for April. It’s a place for authors to tell us about their awesome April releases. The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

  • The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of March would be an April release)
  • You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
  • No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
  • Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
  • This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
  • DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

That’s it. Post away.

Death on an ice-frozen lake (kinda like Fargo in the news now, but frozen solid) … Nowhere To Run releases on April 7 in download and in July in print (hmm. In July it might be hard to imagine a frozen lake. Or by then, you might WANT to imagine a frozen lake).

It features Mac Shefflington, who’s been running from her past and Harry Mortonson, the retired sheriff who decides to help her. Toss in an ex-CIA operative, a government cover-up, and a deadly chase on a frozen Minnesota lake and voila: you’ve got Nowhere To Run. Check my web site for release details and links (jayellwilson.com).

    Hi, Guys!
Thanks for the opportunity to plug my April release. I have a novel coming out in e-book format from Samhain, one that’s very dear to my heart. Here’s the blurb copy from Samhain:

Just when the darkness seems permanent, fate flips a switch.

    Butterfly Tattoo
    © 2009 Deidre Knight

Michael Warner has been drifting in a numb haze since his lover was killed by a drunk driver. As the anniversary of the wreck approaches, Michael's grief grows more suffocating. Yet he must find a way through the maze of pain and secrets to live for their troubled young daughter who struggles with guilt that she survived the crash.

Out of the darkness comes a voice, a lifeline he never expected to find-’Rebecca O'Neill, a development executive in the studio where Michael works as an electrician.

Rebecca, a former sitcom celebrity left scarred from a crazed fan's attack, has retreated from the limelight and from life in general, certain no man can ever get past her disfigurement. The instant sparks between her and Michael, who arrives to help her during a power outage, come as a complete surprise-’and so does her uncanny bond with his daughter.

For the first time, all three feel compelled to examine their inner and outer scars in the light of love. But trust is hard to come by, especially when you're not sure what to believe when you look in the mirror. The scars? Or the truth?

Warning: This title contains a three-hankie redemptive romance, a man with a complicated past, a heroine who's stronger than she knows, and tender, explicit sex scenes that may just break your heart-’and make you believe in love once again.

On sale date is 4/21 and you can order BUTTERFLY TATTOO from here:

Loving Will by Eve Boston, is a full-length contemporary BDSM romance that tests the physical and emotional boundaries of a relationship, as an experienced ex-dom lifts an emotionally fragile woman above her tragic past, and his. Their relationship is based upon trust, honesty, communication, and sexual submission.

Will is analytical and intellectual; Jane is talented in art and literature. They have a common interest in past lives and were once ancient lovers. Will, a researcher with a brand-new doctorate, believes in the science of genetic memory.

Thank you for the opportunity to to promote my April books. Listen with Your Heart was released by Desert Breeze Publishing which launched their new venture today, March 29.

LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART by Barbara Scott
What if the man of your dreams stepped into your arms? Can real life ever be as sweet as the fantasy?  Set in 1871, LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART sweeps from the tragedy of the Chicago Fire to the streets of New York and finally to the wild, dangerous coast of Ireland.  “If you love a story with a charming Irish hero, an intrepid heroine, and a wee bit of mystery, don’t miss this one!”  Carol Carson, author of FAMILY MAN
    Excerpt:

From below, Daniel Connolly's voice pierced her consciousness on its sweetest, saddest final note and the thunder of the audience resounded through her feet. “Bravo!  Encore!  Encore!” they shouted.
Morgan snatched the envelope from the mirror and crushed it in her hand. She stared at her fist for a moment as the applause quieted, and in the expectant hush that followed, she waited for Daniel's voice again.
    “Deserto sulla terra…”
She shoved the letter deep into her pocket and hurried from the room. High -above the stage, amid the riggings and the cables, she found a perch on the catwalk that allowed her to see the burnished gold of Daniel Connolly's head, his broad, silk-clad shoulders, and his hands, reaching, imploring, expressing all the emotion carried in his voice. She did not know the meaning of the Italian words he sang, only that they must come from a heart as lonely and broken as hers.
From this high sanctuary, Morgan imagined that he sang only to her. Neither the hundreds filling the audience tonight nor Daniel's wife who waited in the wings could rob her of that joy tonight. Those hands were reaching out to Morgan, and that voice beseeched her alone to understand and heal him of his sorrow. The sadness in his voice shuddered through her, and she accepted it, nestled in her soul beside her own.
A tear slipped down her cheek and then another. So involved in the performance was she that she did not notice the two men who rumbled up the stairs to her father's room. It was Rupert's confused and strangely-muffled bellowing that jolted her to her feet.
And it was the sound of the scuffle, followed by an alarming silence that sent her racing toward the disturbance. Their trunk was already on the landing blocking the doorway. She squeezed past it and shoved through the door. Inside were the two bruisers who usually guarded the box office for Faraday. Her father slumped in a stupor in one man's arms while another struggled to get his rubbery legs into the trousers she had laid out for him.
“How dare you hurt my father!”  Morgan punched her fist into the side of the man who supported Rupert and clawed at his stranglehold around her father's chest. “You’re holding him too tight. Let him go. He can’t breathe!” she yelled at him.
With a quick jerk of his elbow, he caught Morgan on the cheek
and sent her tottering backward. She screamed in frustration as she fell.
“Shut her up, Douglas. Ain't we been told to keep this whole
thing quiet?” the man hissed at his partner.
“Can't ye see I got my hands full here, Jack?” Douglas wrestled with Rupert's legs, trying to shove them into his trousers. Just as he jammed one leg in, the other crumpled at the knee. “Hold him up, would ye? Can't ye keep his damn knees straight?”
Morgan took advantage of their bumbling to scramble up behind Jack and clamp her arms around his leg. Before he could shake her off, she bit him behind the knee.
“Arrrgh!  Why, you little bitch!” Jack hollered as he dropped
Rupert and grabbed her by the hair. He dragged Morgan to her feet and, with one arm, pinned both of hers to her sides. He raised a wide palm to clamp over her mouth. Douglas and Rupert toppled in a tangled heap on the floor. Douglas cursed and her father moaned.
“Let me go!” she squeaked against Jack's salty palm with what little air she managed to gulp. “I’ll dress him and we'll leave. Just don’t hurt him anymore.”
“Let her go, Jack,” came Clive Faraday's voice from the door. “I want them out of here before Connolly comes off stage.”
Jack released her «and she staggered to her father. Finding him to be relatively unharmed, she launched herself at Faraday.
“Is this how you settle things, Mr. Faraday?  By throwing us into the street? What about the contract you signed, an act presented, and money owed?”
“Money? An act? That falling down fool should pay me!”
“My father is not a fool. And when his many friends in the theater hear of the way the Victoria refuses payment on duly performed acts, you won’t get another performer to set foot on your stage. I believe I’ll start by informing Mr. Connolly of your conniving.”  She pushed past him toward the door.
“Stop!  Catch her,” Faraday ordered his guards. But she was all the way to the middle of the catwalk before they ;followed.
“Well, should I do it, Mr. Faraday?” she whispered loud enough for him to hear over “Green Grow the Lilacs.” She cupped her hands around her mouth and leaned over the railing. “Oh, Mr. Con-’”
    “No!  Stop, I’ll pay.”
    “The full contract?” she whispered.
Faraday’s shoulders slumped. “The full contract.”

Transgressions by Erastes (gay historical romance)
Published by Running Press/Perseus April 2009

It is 1642. England is on the brink of civil war.

David Caverly is a beautiful but indolent youth, who dreams of honour and glory and of joining the King's Army. His father employs Jonathan Graie as an apprentice smith – Jonathan is a Puritan and although shocked by David's behaviour and blasphemous mouth, he is inexorably drawn to him.

When the King declares war against his own government, the country is split in half. Separated by lies and the war, David and Jonathan fight their way across the country, never thinking they’ll find each other again.

This novel covers one of the most turbulent periods of English history where brother fought against brother, son against father and a King lost his crown, and his head.

Released with its ‘running mate’: “False Colors” by Alex Beecroft (Age of Sail), these two books will be available in the main romance sections of bookshops and also as a giveaway at the Romance Writers of America Conference in July.

    Thanks for this forum.

So BLUE DIABLO releases in just over a week. I could present blurbs & excerpts here, but y’all are ‘net savvy. You know how to find that stuff, should you want it. Instead, I offer some reader comments:

“GOD BLESS ANN AGUIRRE! Within just the first few pages of Blue Diablo, I said to myself, THIS is why I love to read.

Ann has given us a heroine who's more BFF than avatar. She'll have your back in a bar fight; but she won't be bailing you out of jail because she'll drag your butt out from under the bar and through the window before the cops ever get there. She loves food, drinks, and damns her hips. Corine sometimes has to bite her tongue to hold back inappropriate comments, and sometimes she doesn't bother to hold back. She gets horny and gets satisfied, whether alone or with someone else-’unless she's denying herself to prove a point. She unabashedly appreciates a nice helping of eye candy. And, oh yeah, she also happens to possess a few paranormal gifts that have kept her on the run most of her life and get her involved with other not-quite-normal characters. Those other characters include her ex-boyfriend, Chance, who's complicating her life again, but still needs to prove to Corine that he's not just offering lip service (in more ways than one).

Within just a few moments of meeting Corine I eagerly followed her away from my world and into hers. Is there anything better than feeling reality slip away as you settle into a great book? Blue Diablo reminded me why I love to read, and Corine reminded me why I love to read Ann Aguirre's characters.” –Bev/QB, of Cubie’s Confections

The consensus is: If you want some different UF, this is your stop. All aboard! The no-vampire, no-were, no-fey train is leaving from this station.

PS – Patricia Briggs really loved this book, so don’t you owe it to her to check it out?

I can’t believe April is finally upon us! But I’m glad it got here in a hurry, because on April 21, my red hot contemporary romance will be released in ebook format from Samhain Publishing.

Unleashed is the story of what could happen when two best friends jet off to paradise to escape shared heartbreak, only to find their demons came along for the ride…

It's not enough that Kelsey's husband left her for another woman. Oh, no. The “other woman” had to be her best friend Evan's fiancée. Not only has she lost her marriage, she fears losing Evan to the lingering awkwardness and humiliation that hangs between them.

Evan has no intention of letting that happen. He's got plans…namely, an extra plane ticket to Hawaii now his future wife is out of the picture. There's only one person he wants on the trip with him, the one who's always been there for him. The one he should never have let slip away into the arms of a traitorous friend who shattered her heart.

Kelsey is anticipating a week of fun in the sun with the man who's always treated her like a little sister. No one's more surprised when she discovers that Evan has seduction on his mind-’and that she's more than ready for it.

Love is the most powerful healing force of all. But past demons have a way of ripping open old wounds, and threatening the survival of even the strongest friendship…

Warning: This title contains explicit sex between best friends, graphic language…and a hero who knows how to put the hot in “hot tub”.

You can find an excerpt and all that good stuff over at Samhain, or on my website.

Thanks for this opportunity, and I hope you enjoy all the great releases this month!

In the year 1066, England struggles against Norman invaders, and two strangers cross paths on a pilgrimage fraught with peril – only to discover a love worth any danger….

Battle-weary Marc de Sens has never encountered a woman like Sunniva of Wereford: beautiful, brilliant, and miles above the curs who call themselves her kin. Alas, she is promised to another and Marc’s obligation is to his three orphaned nieces. But when Sunniva’s circumstances suddenly change, Marc learns the truth about her “betrothal”…

A rough-hewn knight so gentle with children intrigues Sunniva, who never knew a kind word or caring touch from any man until Marc rescued her from the grimmest of fates. When her loutish father and brothers are killed, Sunniva is finally free, but her troubles are far from over. Although Marc has appointed himself her protector, he has a dark secret – as well as an uncanny ability to disarm her completely…

CAST A PALE SHADOW by Barbara Scott releases April 17 from The Wild Rose Press.

    Prologue

    Nicholas
    Michigan

“Once upon a time,” Nicholas whispered, so close he could feel the cold alabaster of her ear brush his lips, “There was a Sleeping Princess who waited only the kiss of her true love to awaken her from her long, lonely sleep.” He stretched himself out beside her, the chill of her body drawing away his warmth even through their clothes. He would see the soft, dark, warmth of her eyes again. She would open them to him. He would find the magic in her, in both of them this time.

With a light sweep of his fingertips-’ he could not bear to touch the pale stone of her forehead for fear the ice would reach in to pierce his soul-’ he lifted the tumbled wisps of her hair away from her eyes. He waited the very moment she flickered them open, when she would see that it was he Nicholas who performed the miracle and love him all the more for it. She had failed to give him the miracle he asked, but he would not fail her. They would have another chance.

Her perfect stillness nearly daunted him even while he envied her for it. Wasn’t that utter peace what he had wanted? That she had attained it so effortlessly while he was left alone and wanting filled him with resentment and fear. Perhaps it would never be possible for him and, in slipping away as she had, she had demonstrated her despair of him, her lack of trust.

“I can’t live without you,” she said so softly in her tear-filled whisper.

“I wouldn’t ask that of you,” he promised. But he realized now that she had not understood what he truly was asking of her. He couldn't let himself believe her failure was deliberate. A misunderstanding. Yes, a tragic misunderstanding. That was all.

Her lips were slightly parted and nearly as pale as her ashen cheeks. Nicholas brushed his own tears until his fingertips were wet with them, then traced her mouth with their moistness. He could taste the saltiness of them as he kissed her, thinking of magic and miracles and wishes and love. But nothing happened. Her stillness was impenetrable. Her eyes refused to open. She was gone, and he could not reach her.

Tenderly, he straightened her crisp, white collar and smoothed the bright red wool of her favorite skirt, then folded the quilt around her, tucking it up and around her shiny black shoes, the ones she loved with the heels she could barely walk in. He tied the first rope at her knees and the second at her hips. Her cold, little fingers were stiffening slightly as he folded her hands, one over the other. across her chest.

Too late, he remembered the ring he had bought her and never gave her, never had time to. A vision of her bright, loving eyes brimming with tears as they might have been when she saw it for the first time staggered him back to sag in the cracked, leather armchair where she had sat on his lap so many times.

He would never see her again. He would never again hear her sweet laughter when he whispered in her ear. He would never again feel the, tender heat of her surrounding him, taking him with her as she plummeted over the brink of her waterfall of stars, as she called it.

Forcing himself to rise, Nicholas searched the drawers of the painted chest they both shared until he found the ring, still in its blue velvet box, still in its white paper bag. It had two tiny rubies, her birthstone and his.

“We are almost cosmic twins, did you know that? Only three days and two years apart,” she murmured with delight when he told her his birthdate. Lifting the ring from its satin nest, he breathed on it and polished it against his jeans before placing it on her third finger, left hand.

“Until death do us part, Cynthia. But it wasn't supposed to part us. Why couldn’t you take me with you?” He rested his forehead against her hands until he felt their ice numb his heart.

Finally, there was nothing to do but fold the corner of the quilt over her face and tie another rope at her shoulders. Just enough twilight remained for him to complete his task without a lantern. Nicholas gathered his precious bundle in his arms and left the silent, empty cabin, winding his way through the trees until he reached the grave he had prepared.

Gently, he lay Cynthia at the edge, then jumped in, positioning himself to shoulder her and nestle her into the soft, cool earth at the bottom. If he could just think of a way, he would lay down beside her and pull the dirt like a blanket around them both.

But there was no way, so he hoisted himself up out of the grave and bid her goodbye. He began to fill the hole.

Cynthia. Michigan. Eventually he hoped that would be all he would remember. And in time that would fade and jumble, so that when the night terrors struck, he wouldn’t recall which face belonged to which name or whether last year had been the year for Laura in Milwaukee or was it the year before? Could it really have been as long as five years ago when Valerie-’ ?

He hated that it happened that way. It seemed disloyal to Cynthia and Laura and-’ no, it was best not to think of Valerie at all.

Nicholas had loved each of them, loved them to the depths of his soul, but he had to forget them. Or else how would he have the strength to go on to the next?

And maybe the next would be the one.

It was safer, he believed, to count to only two: the last one and the next one. He could not allow himself to think of the others, or to suppose there would be any beyond the next one. He was not some monster who wanted this to go on forever. Cynthia didn’t think him a monster. None of them did. Did they?

Thanks Dear Author for the chance to promote Ghostland, my debut Berkley release, an urban fantasy romance available on April 7. Here’s the official blurb:

In a post-Apocalyptic world where supernaturals have emerged from hiding, wealthy humans delight in decadence while the religious gain power through temptation. For the masses, fear reigns from birth to death, and the afterlife holds beings that only the bravest can summon-’or dare to desire…

Taken from her home and family, shamaness Aisling McConaughey has no choice except to enter the “ghostlands” in order to learn the fate of a wealthy man's mistress. But there is always a price to pay for the use of her power. To save the woman's life she must summon the Djinn prince Zurael en Caym-’and yield to his savage, sensual rage.

Zurael fears nothing except being called and bound to a human's will. He intends to kill Aisling after she's served as bait to find an enemy in possession of an ancient tablet. But the more he tastes of her innocent spirit, the more he'll use his fiery touch and seductive whispers to keep her hungry for his mercy-’even as they weave an erotic spell that he cannot escape…

Powerful forces threaten both their worlds, leaving Aisling and Zurael with an unbearable choice. Follow their hearts…or stay true to their honor and risk losing an eternity of pleasure.

Four and 1/2 stars from Romantic Times BOOKreviews-”As much a whodunit as a paranormal adventure, Strong's terrific tale should win her many new fans. Really good stuff!”

Sweet Oblivion 2: Snare just came out today!

With summer ending and temperatures dipping low at night, Michael’s eager to get his leather jacket back, and although Wild Bill could easily vamp any sales clerk into giving Michael some new duds, it wouldn’t be quite the same as the jacket he left at his parents’ house. Not unless the malls have begun selling clothing with rohypnol and ketamine sewn into the seams.

The return of the jacket comes with a price: a new cell phone from Michael’s parents. Surprisingly, Wild Bill encourages Michael to keep the phone. After all, Michael wouldn’t want to be the only 21-year-old in the world without one. Seems innocent enough. Right?

But you never know where an innocent gift will lead. Michael worries the phone may be some shiny bait, meant to lure him closer to his family, and then, college. Everyone seems intent on getting Michael to enroll, but he’s busy looking to catch a vampire.

Thanks for allowing me to share information about An April to Remember. It was released April 3rd in e-book from The Wild Rose Press and print at Amazon

April Simonson hated all men. They were cruel, sinful beasts. Her disfigured face was proof. That is until she met Jerek Brinkley. Then, as the revered Sultana explodes, April falls into the dark, muddy waters of the Mississippi River terrified she’ll never see the light of day or the handsome riverboat gambler again.

Jerek Brinkley fought hell and high water to save the northern vixen who’d won his heart with her card tricks, only to fear Allan Pinkerton’s arrival in Memphis might reveal secrets he’s not ready for her to know.

Based on history’s greatest maritime disaster, An April to Remember, sprinkled with real facts and events, revives the Sultana, a civil war riverboat whose death toll surpassed the Titanic’s, and offers a new twist on what might have happened that fateful night in 1865.

    Excerpt:
With unexplainable speed, she shot through the water. Gulps of air scorched aching lungs as her face broke the surface. Amongst the debris of wood, cargo and bodies, the colossal side of the Sultana careened. White-capped waves boiled, threatening to drive her into the massive hull or back into the frightening abyss below. Murky water hit the back of her throat before a scream could join hundreds of others echoing through the night.

She threw her head back, choking and gasping for air as her arms flayed against the assaulting water and kicked both feet at the force lugging her downward. Something wrapped around one hand, and another strong heave wrenched her shoulder. She twisted away from the splashes trying to fill her mouth and nose. The steely grip tightened as it towed her away from the ship.

“Jerek!” Her free hand tried to latch onto the fingers wrapped around her wrist.

“I’ve got you!” he yelled above the roar of chaos. His other arm swiftly glided in and out of the water before it wrapped around a bobbing object. With a hard tug, he pulled her next to it. “Grab on with both hands!”

The current was too swift. Her skirt, yards of wet material, acted like a sail and tugged her away from him. The sleeve of his shirt threatened to slip from her fingers.

Jerek seized an elbow and thrust her forward. She wheezed for air as her chest slammed against the floating log.

His hands forced her arms around the cold, wet wood. “April! Don’t let go! Don’t you dare let go!”

I just wanted to let everyone know my outside-the-box historical romance THE PROMISE, the sequel to my debut novel THE LEGACY, is available now. It was released ahead of its May 1 date and Amazon.com is already shipping orders. It should be in book stores soon, but if it isn’t, you can ask your retailer to order it (ask them to order a few extra so your friends can get theirs, too, LOL!).

Romantic Times Magazine BOOK Reviews gave it four stars and said “Passion, intrigue and romance distinguish this wonderful tale. The well-defined characters and fast pace will keep your attention from the first page to the last. Passion and humor are seamlessly inserted into this tale of love and adventure, and the emotional conclusion is very satisfying.”

Eye on Romance gave it a 4.5 star Top Pick review and said THE PROMISE is “passionate, enchanting, and moving.” Historical Romance Writers said “I enjoyed Ms. Bennett’s first book The Legacy and this book is just as good….The journey these two people take is one of true love.”

Monica McCarty, NY Times bestselling author of HIGHLANDER UNCHAINED, says THE PROMISE is “a delightful breath of fresh air in historical romance! With a unique setting and memorable characters, TJ Bennett delivers a gripping romantic adventure that will leave you breathless for more.”

Victoria Dahl, Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Nominee and author of To Tempt a Scotsman and A Rake’s Guide to Pleasure says, “Lush, sexy and exciting, The Promise offers a fascinating glimpse into a rarely-visited age!”

What is it about, you ask? Here’s the scoop:

THE PROMISE is about the brother of my hero from the first novel. He is a mercenary in the service of Emperor Charles V during the Italian campaigns who falls in love with an unattainable woman. She believes she is cursed, as every man who has ever loved her died violently, but he's willing to risk everything to be with her-’even death.

    Thanks!

    8. You like the cover.

    7. It's not part of the Twilight saga.

    Earl.

    3. It's not on Oprah's Book Club list.

    2. You're a romantic, but you'd prefer not to read about laving tongues and glistening orbs.

And the number one reason you should purchase MR. MALCOLM'S LIST:

    1. It's guaranteed to make you laugh out loud or your money back. *
