For long time fantasy and romance readers, one of the favorite books people bring up is Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Set in Minneapolis, the titular character is kidnapped and brought to an abandoned mansion to serve as torture for Constantine, a master vampire who has been caught and chained by his enemies.
Unbeknownst to the captors, Rae “Sunshine” Seddon is the daughter of Raven Blaise, a man of immense power in a family of immense power. But Rae doesn’t know her own capabilities until her life depends upon it. She is able to help Constantine escape by harnessing the power of the sun. When they touch, her immunity to the sun is passed on to Constantine and together they escape.
There’s a strong thread of romance between Rae and Constantine and lusty times only hinted at. Perhaps romance readers inferred a greater romance than the author intended but the ending of the book is so frustratingly vague, we are left to fill in the details ourselves. Mine, of course, includes Constantine working out some arrangement with Rae, confessing his eternal love, and her making pastries for as long as they both shall live.
Since the publication in 2003, McKinley has been asked frequently whether there will be a sequel. At one point, she said that it wasn’t up to her but in 2008, she admitted that it was likely never going to happen.
One reader on goodreads said that she doubts McKinley will ever write a sequel and that she is okay with this because sequels have a bad way of ruining things. (The last three books in the Jessica Darling series anyone? or the terrible terrible terrible novella written by Anne Bishop that ruined the Black Jewels trilogy?)
Yet, despite having been burned in the past by bad sequels, I can’t help but want to revisit the world of Rae and Con. It’s the one sequel I would love to read. I’m sure there are others so let’s hear them. What’s the sequel you wish would be written?
