About Sarah Frantz

http://iaspr.org

Sarah F. is a literary critic, a college professor, and an avid reader of romance -- and is thrilled that these are no longer mutually exclusive. Her academic specialization is Romantic-era British women novelists, especially Jane Austen, but she is contributing to the exciting re-visioning of academic criticism of popular romance fiction. Sarah is a contributor to the academic blog about romance, Teach Me Tonight, the winner of the 2008-2009 RWA Academic Research Grant, and the founder and President of the International Association of the Study of Popular Romance (IASPR). Sarah mainly reviews BDSM romance and gay male romance and hopes to be able to beat her TBR pile into submission when she has time to think. Sarah teaches at Fayetteville State University, NC.

REVIEW: Cotillion by Georgette Heyer

REVIEW: Cotillion by Georgette Heyer

The first book I assigned my continuing education class on Georgette Heyer at NC State was Regency Buck. The second was Cotillion, which I actually taught last week. As one of my students said, “It’s just delightful.” Cotillion shows up on “Favorite Heyer book” lists all the time, and I never really understood why. I(…)

REVIEW: Jump First by Charles Edward

REVIEW: Jump First by Charles Edward

Dear Mr. Edward. The mysterious and elusive Dr. Laura Vivanco sent me the link to your book, as an example of a meta-romance. Even better, a meta-m/m-romance. I love romances about romance authors and I especially love those about the m/m romance world, considering its own peculiar fucked-upped-ness and stranger-than-fiction history (Z.A. Maxfield’s Send to(…)

REVIEW: Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer

REVIEW: Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer

I volunteer to teach a continuing education class at North Carolina State University’s Encore! program, which is a non-credit program for those 50-and-over. Once a year I get to teach a course of 6 classes on anything I want to, with students who really want to be there, without having to grade a damn thing.(…)

REVIEW: Trifecta by Kate Sherwood

REVIEW: Trifecta by Kate Sherwood

Dear Ms. Sherwood. I didn’t really expect to like this book. I love menage stories, especially m/m/m menage. So I read the book because of that, not because I was blown away by the excerpt. I thought the excerpt was too thinky, didn’t have enough dialogue, and the characters looked a bit flat. But I’m(…)

REVIEW: Bayou Dreams by Lynn Lorenz

REVIEW: Bayou Dreams by Lynn Lorenz

Dear Ms. Lorenz. I don’t read werewolf books. I just don’t. If I see a m/m shifter book, I usually just move right along. But one line in the excerpt sold me on this book: "Don't give me any back talk, son." She waved her spatula at him as she talked around a cigarette dangling(…)

REVIEW: “Commanding Acquisitions” and “Firm Touch” by Christine d’Abo (with bonus: Brazen by Cara McKenna)

REVIEW: “Commanding Acquisitions” and “Firm Touch” by Christine d’Abo (with bonus: Brazen by Cara McKenna)

Dear Ms. d’Abo. I became interested in your writing after seeing that Jane had accepted one of your stories for her Agony/Ecstasy anthology. So I hied me on over to Ellora’s Cave and bought these two stories. I’m glad I did and I look forward to your anthology story even more now. Commanding Acquisitions Simon’s(…)

REVIEW: Nowhere Ranch by Heidi Cullinan

REVIEW: Nowhere Ranch by Heidi Cullinan

Dear Ms. Cullinan. I adored this book. It’s utterly and completely over the top. It’s exuberant. It’s angry — no, it’s furious. It’s totally steeped in dirty nasty sex. It’s leaking angst all over the place. It’s political and powerful and brilliant. And I think most people will either love it or despise it with(…)

REVIEW: His Client by Ava March

REVIEW: His Client by Ava March

Dear Ms. March. I loved the excerpt for this book: prostitution! angst! unrequited love! m/m romance! It hit many of my not-so-sekrit Buttons of Hottness and Readerly Pleasure. And I very much enjoyed the book, even if I wanted to beat one of the heroes and not in a fun, sexy way. Jasper Reed, a(…)

REVIEW: One Real Thing by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox

REVIEW: One Real Thing by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox

Dear Ms. Crow and Ms. Fox. I’ve had a hard time writing this review. I made it a Recommended Read for January and it’s been a best-seller at Carina since it’s been out. But it’s such a subtle book, so simple and yet so complicated, I’ve been lost for what to say about it. This(…)

REVIEW: The Nobleman and the Spy by Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon

REVIEW: The Nobleman and the Spy by Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon

Dear Ms. Dee and Ms. Devon: This was a December Recommended Read for me. I enjoyed the characters, I liked the plot, I liked the historical feel. Just in general this was a good solid historical romance. The year is 1866. Jonathan Reese is a spy, a former soldier who didn’t know how to re-enter(…)

REVIEW: Truthful Change by Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow

REVIEW: Truthful Change by Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow

Dear Ms. Davitt and Ms. Snow. I have previously enjoyed your novels, both those I’ve reviewed and those I haven’t. And I had this book in my review pile for a while. But…someone (can’t remember who, sorry) jumped it way up my list by saying how wonderful it was and I spent most of Thanksgiving(…)

REVIEW: Finding Zach by Rowan Speedwell (with bonus short story)

REVIEW: Finding Zach by Rowan Speedwell (with bonus short story)

Dear Ms. Speedwell. I considered this book when it first came out in May, but I read the first bit of the excerpt and decided it was just a bit too much, too over the top, so didn’t request it. But, well, flattery will get you at least a reading. Thankfully, what I read, I(…)

REVIEW: Not Knowing Jack by K.A. Mitchell

REVIEW: Not Knowing Jack by K.A. Mitchell

Dear Ms. Mitchell. This was not the book I was expecting. At all. Which doesn’t make it bad, at all. It just…threw me a curve ball pretty early on (not that I have any idea what that metaphor actually means) and just kept them coming. That said, I adored it. I adored Tony. I adored(…)

REVIEW: His for the Holidays anthology from Carina Press

REVIEW: His for the Holidays anthology from Carina Press

Carina is putting out three (invitation only) holiday anthologies, one contemporary, one paranormal, and one male/male. It is apparently possible to buy the stories grouped in the anthology, but also separately, individually, which I think is a fascinating choice. I was thrilled when I saw the m/m lineup: L.B. Gregg, Harper Fox, Josh Lanyon, and(…)
