About Jennie

http://dearauthor.com

has been an avid if often frustrated romance reader for the past 15 years. In that time she's read a lot of good romances, a few great ones, and, unfortunately, a whole lot of dreck. Many of her favorite authors (Ivory, Kinsale, Gaffney, Williamson, Ibbotson) have moved onto other genres or produce new books only rarely, so she's had to expand her horizons a bit. Newer authors she enjoys include Julie Ann Long, Megan Hart and J.R. Ward, and she eagerly anticipates each new Sookie Stackhouse novel. Strong prose and characterization go a long way with her, though if they are combined with an unusual plot or setting, all the better. When she's not reading romance she can usually be found reading historical non-fiction.

REVIEW: The Lantern by Deborah Lawrenson

REVIEW: The Lantern by Deborah Lawrenson

Dear Ms. Lawrenson, I happened to read a review of this, your debut novel, in People a month or so ago. I was intrigued by the description of the novel as an homage to Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca. Imagine my surprise when, the very next day, while sifting through my big drawer o’ books Jane has sent me, I [...]

What Jennie’s Been Reading

What Jennie’s Been Reading

By Jennie I’m not sure how often I’ll be contributing to this feature; I’m a slow reader who reads several books at once, and right now three of the four books I’m reading are LONG and dense. So unless folks want to read a chapter by chapter update, it might not be of much interest. Anyway… [...]

REVIEW: The King’s Courtesan by Judith James

REVIEW: The King’s Courtesan by Judith James

Dear Ms. James, I vaguely recall hearing about your two previous books, Broken Wing and Libertine’s Kiss, and being a bit intrigued. They sounded like a bit of something different, with unusual settings and good reader buzz. When the opportunity came recently to read The King’s Courtesan, I jumped at the chance. Hope Matthews and [...]

REVIEW: In a Treacherous Court by Michelle Diener

Dear Ms. Diener, Having recently read and enjoyed a historical novel set in the 16th century and dealing with intrigue and assassins, I was intrigued when In a Treacherous Court fell into my hands. Realizing it was a debut sharpened my interest, since I’m always on the lookout for new authors, especially those whose work is something [...]

REVIEW: Tell Me More by Janet Mullany

REVIEW: Tell Me More by Janet Mullany

Dear Ms. Mullany, I have enjoyed your witty historical romances quite a bit, and liked your historical erotic romance (written as Jane Lockwood) as well, though I had a few issues with it. So I was more than happy to hear that you had a new book out, even if contemporaries aren’t really my first [...]

REVIEW: Cat’s Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold by Bettie Sharpe

REVIEW: Cat’s Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold by Bettie Sharpe

Dear Ms. Sharpe, I was a big fan of your previous reworking of the story of Cinderella, Ember, so when I heard you had another novella out based on a fairy tale, I was intrigued. I was slightly dismayed to discover that Cat’s Tale was based on Puss in Boots, which is a fairy tale [...]

REVIEW: The Second Duchess by Elizabeth Loupas

REVIEW: The Second Duchess by Elizabeth Loupas

Dear Ms. Loupas, After I finished reading a really depressing and disturbing book, I felt the need for a complete change in direction. Jane had sent me a copy of your debut novel a few months earlier. Seeing that it was a historical mystery, I figured that it was different enough to suit my purposes, [...]

REVIEW: A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal by Meredith Duran

REVIEW: A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal by Meredith Duran

Dear Ms. Duran, To my way of thinking, a new book by you is always a cause for celebration, given that your previous books have all earned A minuses or B pluses from me. So I sat down to read A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal with high hopes – hopes that were luckily not disappointed. [...]

REVIEW: The Last Time I Saw Paris by Lynn Sheene

Dear Ms. Sheene, When I received a review copy of this book, I was instantly intrigued – first by the evocative, lovely cover, and then by the back cover blurb, which begins,”May 1940: Fleeing a glamorous Manhattan life built on lies, Claire Harris arrives in Paris with a romantic vision of starting anew.” An interesting [...]

DUELING REVIEW: Any Man of Mine by Rachel Gibson

DUELING REVIEW: Any Man of Mine by Rachel Gibson

Dear Ms. Gibson, I’ve been reading your books for so many years and have enjoyed enough of them that when I hear a new one is coming out, I automatically make room in my reading schedule to at least look at it. And since the books with sports heroes are usually ones I like, the [...]

REVIEW: Where Shadows Dance by C.S. Harris

REVIEW: Where Shadows Dance by C.S. Harris

Dear Ms. Harris, I’ve been a devotee of your Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries since the first book, What Angels Fear, was published in 2005. Where Shadows Dance is the sixth book in the series featuring an aristocrat turned amateur detective in Regency-era London. The book opens with doctor Paul Gibson taking receipt of a fresh [...]

REVIEW: Mr. Bishop and the Actress by Janet Mullany

Dear Ms. Mullany, When Jane mentioned that you had a new book available for review, I jumped at the chance to read it. I’ve become quite the fan of your books put out by Little Black Dress, and cannot for the life of me understand why these aren’t available for sale in the U.S.* It’s [...]

REVIEW: When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James

REVIEW: When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James

Dear Ms. James, I was under the impression that I had previously only read one book by you. A trip down memory lane, via my book log, proved me wrong. (BTW, my log is celebrating its 10th anniversary! Thanks for the memories, Microsoft Excel! I can barely remember what I read yesterday these days, so [...]

REVIEW: The Darling Strumpet by Gillian Bagwell

Dear Ms. Bagwell, When a review copy of your novel fell into my hands at the beginning of January, I was intrigued. I had actually seen the book at Borders a couple of days before and noted the cover rec from Diana Gabaldon (I know, I know, only gulliable fools are drawn in by cover [...]
