REVIEW: A Clockwork Christmas by Nina Gooden

REVIEW: A Clockwork Christmas by Nina Gooden

Dear Ms. Gooden, I’ve never read a steampunk book and frankly had doubts that it would be to my taste but since I’m trying to expand my reading of new-to-me authors, I thought why not try a new genre as well. The results weren’t what I was hoping for but the reason for the grade [...]

Friday Film Review: Bachelor Mother

Bachelor Mother (1939) Genre: Screwball Comedy Grade: B J.B. Merlin: I don’t care who the father is, I’m the grandfather! Finding a New Year’s Eve movie is tough and I’d almost given up until I remembered this one. It’s got humor, dancing, a sweet romance, a cute baby and one determined grandfather. Polly Parrish (Ginger [...]

What Jayne’s Been Reading and Watching – November and most of December

Lawks, it’s been ages since I wrote one of these. Mainly because for the past two or so months, I’ve been in a romance reading, ennui funk. It hits me every few years but I think I’m almost over it and that the light at the end of the tunnel is sunshine and not an [...]

Friday Film Review: Blackadder’s A Christmas Carol

Blackadder’s A Christmas Carol (1988) Genre: Spoof Grade: A “Bad guys have all the fun.” No, right now I’m not in a very serious Christmas mood. Let’s have some fun with it, I say. And what better way than with Edmund Ebneezer Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson), his trusty sidekick Baldrick (Tony Robinson) and most of the [...]

Jayne’s Best of 2011 List

Jayne’s Best of 2011 List

Even though I’m using the Top Ten Lists tag, this year in checking over my notes, I see I have a lot of B grade books but not as many B+ or A range books of those I read that were published in 2011. Since I want the books on my list to be ones [...]

Friday Film Review: Holiday

Friday Film Review: Holiday

Holiday (1938) Genre: Comedy/Drama Grade: B This movie is really a bit of a fudge as a Christmas/New Year’s themed one since the main emphasis of the film isn’t the holiday season. Instead, the film is set from right around Christmas until shortly after the new year begins. But, what the heck. Read through to [...]

REVIEW: Devilishly Hot by Kathy Love

REVIEW: Devilishly Hot by Kathy Love

Annie Lou Riddle had a plan: Move to New York City. Break into the fashion industry. Work her way to the top. Nowhere in that scenario did she expect to accidentally sell her soul in exchange for a job at Hot! Magazine. Oops. Demons, it seems, aren’t big on letting mortals off the hook. Now [...]

REVIEW: Definitely Not Mr. Darcy by Karen Doornebos

Dear Ms Doornebos, We at Dear Author get sent a lot of requests to review books and many of us have lamented at the frequency of Jane Austen themed ones. Yet, despite that, another reviewer and I were interested in the description of your book “Definitely Not Mr. Darcy.” A reality dating show with a [...]

Bad Santa (aka Bad(der) Santa) (2003) Genre: Holiday/Crime/Comedy Grade: B “Can I at least take the hat off?” – Willie “No, I love the hat!” – Sue Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas. I love decorating my trees and the outside porch. I love it when someone opens my gift to them and their [...]

REVIEW: Coming Home for Christmas (Anthology) by Carla Kelly

Dear Mrs. Kelly, I know that when I start a Carla Kelly book, I’ll get a certain number of things. An honorable hero, an unflappable heroine, some idiot secondary characters who may bluster and threaten to cause the hero and heroine some problems but who usually are mainly all hot air and dismissed as the [...]
