I'm a huge Robin McKinley fan, too. Beauty is wonderful, as are Spindle's End and Deerskin (and, IMO, everything she's written that isn't a fairy tale retelling, too). I LOVED Ash, and so did my teenage daughter when I finally let her borrow it. It's a beautiful book, in many ways -- the edition is lovely, the story and characters were very special, and the style in which you wrote it was really suited to the fairy tale roots. I've lost count of the number of times I have recommended your book. Thank you for writing it!

Thank you so much Malinda for sharing your first sale story.

...not writing creatively was turning me into a bitter, unhappy person.

It's such a hard road, to listen to yourself and find what makes you happy...and then stick with it and not conform to expectations. I have Ash on my TBR list and am so looking forward to reading it!

And I too love Robin McKinley's Beauty. I think that needs to be re-read :)

Congratulations! A book, a dream realized, accolades and a nomination for doing what you've always loved. Good news doesn't get better than that.

After four years in grad school, I finally faced facts: not writing creatively was turning me into a bitter, unhappy person.

I know what you mean about this, and it always makes me glad to see it articulated. As difficult as writing can be at times, not writing is worse. That's one of the reasons I write for DA, as well. Self-expression is necessary to my happiness -- something I wish I'd figured out at a younger age.

Thanks for sharing your first sale story!

Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale, but I think initially the lesbian romance would have turned me off. However, I think I may give it a try after all, can't shut my mind down too quickly because I never thought I'd enjoy reading m/m romance either.

I bought Ash before Christmas on a recommendation from a poster on Fantasy with Bite. I've had it on the bookcase by my work computer as a reward when I get my end of the year stuff cleared out. Maybe I will breakdown and read it early.

Writing the book one wants to read is something that I seen advised over and over in the writing community. And you went and did it! Congratulations.

I haven't read your book, yet, but I will!

I'm heterosexual and I have read some same sex romance fantasies that were just beautiful.

Congratulations on all your accolades. And I loved how you said that a series of happy accidents led you to where you are.

Those are the very best kind.
