@Sarah:
I liked that you were unsure whether her love for him was real, but that in the end it didn't matter - the only way it could end is the way it did. And the characterization of Albert was nice, I actually liked him. When I watch movies like this, I can't help but wonder how they would be made now in a big hollywood studio, most likely with a happy ending and a villainous Albert. I must say I vastly prefer this way. Although on a shallow note, in the earlier adaptation Albert was played by a man as handsome and young as Agi, which was a bit different!

A younger, more "Hollywood handsome" actor as the Prince would add a different twist to Alexandra's dilemma. I agree with you that if it were made today, the ending would almost certainly be different. Alexandra would probably kick over the traces, run off with Agi, then be elected as the first President of the country after the revolution which overthrows the old government.

I only caught the last half of this film, but I liked it. Interestingly enough, I later caught the middle of one of the other adaptations (my roommates were watching it as I came home from work).

@A: I don't think Kelly's performance is a reason to hunt this one down - she's good but not outstanding. However, Landis, Guinness, Winwood and Moorehead are great.

This is one Kelly film I've not seen and I've always been a bit put off by some descriptions of it. I really like to "remember her as she was" in films like "High Society" (her final film.) A lot of her contemporaries view her performance in "High Society" as a caricature of herself. And of course, Cole Porter's writing and Satchmo's musical accompaniment move everything along.

Kim, it's going to be shown on Turner Classic Movies, not American Movie Classics. I'm going to be recording it as a DVD myself

I loved this movie when I saw it when I was in high school and had just discovered the older classic Hollywood films. Ever since, I've been hoping to find it on DVD. Thanks for posting this review...now I can catch it on AMC again soon!

I thought it was Romanian due to the number of words obviously derived from Latin but wanted confirmation on that.
