DeVa Gantt's completion to the Collett trio, I read the first book, and I have the second book, I haven't read that because I knew it would make it more difficult to wait for the last book. This is an old fashioned historical epic kind of book which was seperated into three because the publisher dodn't think it would sell as a signle book. Any one who supports self pubs, the author originaly wrote this and published it as Collett's Pray. Anyway read these books, I want more books like this and I htink if these books do really well it could send a message.

@Jenny S

Yes its a pretty good library for SF and Fantasy - their website even has an RSS feed thats updated every friday of all the new books they have purchased! So I get to be FIRST on the list for lots of new books as I check it every weekend.

And thats why places like DA and this kind of thread are AWESOME to get new authors/books to try out - my reading horizons have greatly increased as a result :)

Oooh and Bitter Night just came into my local specialty SF bookstore, and I have a copy on hold for me :)

@ BlueRose, do you know how much I envy you your local library? I wish I could count on mine getting in these great new releases.

@LJ I hope you like "Death in the Stocks" as much as I did. Even the police officers are gentlemanly.

@ReacherFan Thanks for the tick for Skinwalker. I couldn't decide whether to read it or not. You tipped the scales in favour.

I've been plowing my way through paranormals, less true romance than kick-ass heroine. I recommend:

Vicious Circle by Linda Robertson
Skinwalker by Faith Hunter
Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland
Dying Bites by D D Barant

All worthy reads, though Skinwalkers was a cut above. All seem to be the start of a series. I've done the review on Vicious Circle, but not the others yet. Too busy reading. :-)

I just ordered a whole bunch more of new to me authors that are doing good work in this genre.

I'm not feeling the love for Roxanne St Claire's Make Her Pay. It's coming off too predictable for me. Finger Licking' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich was a big disappointment.

The Mane Squeeze by Shelly Laurenston is arriving today or tomorrow. Let's hope it's better than her short novel in the Belong to the Night anthology. Dragons Prefer Blondes by Candace Havens was at best a C-. Would you believe she changed the hair color of the heroine from her first book - where she made this big deal about the different hair color of the Carruthers sisters? GAH! There are times chick-lit books drive me mad. For those who like a bit of mystery, try Kyra Davis' Lust, Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss. Big thumbs up for enjoyment.

I am so excited about all the great books coming out the last 2 weeks.
Amazon will soon be deivering:
The Girl on Legare St. by Karen White
Blaze of Memory
Kindred in Death
Heart Change by Robin Owens
Ain't Too Proud to Beg by Susan Donovan
Skin Game by Ava Gray (aka Ann Aguirre)
Magic in the Shadows by Devon Monk
& Bitter Night (amazon has it)
Just finished the new Stephanie Laurens & Nora Roberts. I am not sure that I will finish the new Susan Mallery, I am having trouble with the male lead as he has been such a villain in the other books.

Thank you, BlueRose and Ruth for the information on Bitter Night. I'm disappointed for Diana Francis, especially since the reviews for the book have been great and I always see her other series at my Borders stores. Maybe I will see if one of the independent bookstores is carrying it, otherwise I'll buy it at B&N.

This is an issue that confuses me. I wonder how Borders came to this decision. It seems they are carrying nearly every urban fantasy/paranormal series that has been released lately. So I wonder what it was about Bitter Night that made them turn it down. Maybe they will have a change of heart and carry it in the future. (I'll check Diana's blog to see if there's any more news about it.)

I'm glad to read your thoughts on Chalice, BlueRose.
<blockquote>Judas Kiss and Devil on Horseback by Holt are good. Actually DOH is my fav of Holt's. Great hero IMHO</blockquote>I'll add these titles to my TBR list and hope they will be reissued at some point.
<blockquote>And just thought I'd mention Georgette Heyer's detective stories. They have only a light touch of romance, but “Death in the Stocks”, “Footsteps in the Dark”, etc. are lovely. But then, I'm a huge fan of Heyer heroes and 1930s mannered mysteries.</blockquote>I bought Death in the Stocks the day it was released. I've never read one of Heyer's mysteries and this one seems to have the best reviews on Amazon. I'm looking forward to reading it.

@emily - no I havent had the chance to read Quatrain, I must see if the library has it

@estara - YAY big fan of Sherwood Smith here - thanks for the update

@LJ - according to her blog - Borders decided not to stock Bitter Night due to the recession essentially :(

And Chalice is EXCELLENT, I got it in HB. It does pay to pace yourself and read slowly (which is hard I know) and I found it improved a lot on a slower reread, but its delightful

@Jenny S

Finished “Hunting Ground” by Patricia Briggs last night, and thought it the best of her Alpha and Omega stories. - I was puzzled as I really liked this too but it got quite average review

“On the Edge” by Ilona Andrews. - I picked up her Magic series after it was raved about here, and loved it, and have this reserved at the library, and cant wait

“Soulless” by Gail Carriger. - also reserved at the library, and really looking forward to this

I bought all six of the Harlequin Vintage Collection books last week -- the reprints of the pulp novels from Harlequin's early history. I haven't even finished the first one (<i>Kiss Your Elbow</i> by Alan Handley, set in the New York theatre world) and I'm loving it. I really hope the other books live up to this one.

Oh, that's a huge shame. I hate to hear for any author that a major chain isn't carrying their book. Thankfully, it is available digitally and I pre-ordered my copy (along with Tainted by Julie Kenner, which I'm reading now) so it was downloaded right to my iPhone the morning of release! It's in my queue of books to read.

I just finished reading Never Love a Lawman, by Jo Goodman, one of my favorite authors. Not a big Westerns fan but I loved this book, which had all JG's trademarks: intricate plot, complicated but strong hero and heroine, and a slowly evolving relationship that you believe will last through to HEA.n

Next up is Indiscreet by Carolyn Jewel.

Waiting for Burn (Howard) from the library. Planning to buy the newest Singh once it hits the shelves.

thanks for sharing, everyone.

Great reviews and great reader comments. I love Dear Author. So, I thought it was time I stopped lurking and contributed.

Finished "Hunting Ground" by Patricia Briggs last night, and thought it the best of her Alpha and Omega stories. Touches of humour and lovely character development. Brother Wolf is such a neat concept.

"On the Edge" by Ilona Andrews. Good read and I'll definitely buy the sequel. I've already fallen in love with its hero.

"Soulless" by Gail Carriger. I was hooked from the very beginning.

And just thought I'd mention Georgette Heyer's detective stories. They have only a light touch of romance, but "Death in the Stocks", "Footsteps in the Dark", etc. are lovely. But then, I'm a huge fan of Heyer heroes and 1930s mannered mysteries.

Great reviews and great reader comments. I love Dear Author. So, I thought it was time I stopped lurking and contributed.

Finished “Hunting Ground” by Patricia Briggs last night, and thought it the best of her Alpha and Omega stories. Touches of humour and lovely character development. Brother Wolf is such a neat concept.

“On the Edge” by Ilona Andrews. Good read and I’ll definitely buy the sequel. I’ve already fallen in love with its hero.

By the way, thanks for the update on Sharon Shinn, Emily. I haven't read her yet, but I've purchased several of her books because of the reviews I've read. Random Blessings sounds like a book I'm going to buy even if I haven't managed to read anything by her before then.

My local Borders stores (there are 5 in NYC) aren't carrying Bitter Night by Diana P. Francis, so of course I want it more now than I did before I called each store to find it. Has anyone else noticed that their Borders isn't carrying this book? The clerks I spoke to (in person and on the phone) had no idea why the book isn't in the stores. It seems some Borders computers list it as a December release and other computers list it as "available online only."

I bought Julie Kenner's Tainted. This will be my first Julie Kenner book. I'm looking forward to reading Skin Game by Ava Gray (aka Ann Aguirre), which I also bought. And later this month I can't wait to get my hands on Kelly Gay's The Better Part of Darkness. I didn't care either way about the book until I read the first chapter and fell in love with the voice. I'm a cover person, so I was more excited about Kelly Meding's Three Days to Dead than The Better Part of Darkness because I preferred Meding's cover.

Robin McKinley's Chalice is out in paperback on 11/24. I've read a lot of mixed reviews for it so I decided to wait for the paperback.

Victoria Holt has another reissue on 11/24 - Lord of the Far Island. I read Mistress of Mellyn and enjoyed it, so I'm going to try this one, too.

To fellow Sherwood Smith fans:

In extremely good news after the September Reader's Thread, Sherwood Smith has a contract on offer with DAW again for another story set in Sartorias-Deles. This time the narrator (not main character) is a scribe and we get to see Colend finally. It might be contemporary to Crown Duel but I'm not sure.

<a href="http://community.livejournal.com/athanarel/291533.html" rel="nofollow">Banner of the Damned and Coronets of Steel</a> therefore have a good chance of becoming reality.
