Thanks Janet for a great review. There have been a lot of buzz about this book but I have been reluctant to read it based solely on the blurb. Your review has been spoiler free and helps me to set the right expectations for the book (e.g. that it is a dense read). I will probably start from the beginning of the Guardian books.

@Jessica: Our comments must have crossed! I agree with you about how well the worldbuilding is proceeding in the series, although I did take note of a few times I was being given "background" info from other books. Still, I thought it was done well and that it was all relevant information, especially considering how many different dimensions Brook is trying to work on at once.

@Estara: I'm sure you're right about the comic book structure, but my problems had more to do with whether things were laid out as tightly as they should be; that is, because I was reading in anticipation of reviewing, I kept having things come up that made me ask myself if they followed from something else, or if the blanks had been filled in, or whether the logic held. And I definitely felt that there were some lapses that had to be filled in by the reader. Obviously it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book, but it kept me from turning my inner critic off during the reading process.

@Janine: Thanks, Janine; the original comment mysteriously unspammed itself overnight, apparently (Jane said by this morning it was posted). Must have been a glitch.

Great review Robin. the kind of debate you start off by the review by mentioning is one I might have happily joined in on prior to reading any romance novels. Very quickly, I realized that the genre is way too diverse for those kinds of broad strokes. And Brook's Guardians series is one reason why.

I love her heroines. They are such admirable, complex, difficult women, and all strong in different ways. I think of the Guardians as a literary vision of some forms of feminism: difference without hierarchy.

I tend to do almost no rereading, and that applies to series as well, so when I pick up a new Guardians book, I haven't been in that world since the last one came out. Something I noticed about DF was how seamlessly the world was rebuilt by Brook without infodumps and plot holdups. I didn't even have to visit her site for the cheat sheet!

So I do agree this is one you can jump into. On the other hand, the events in the book will have more significance for readers with some background.

I don't know whether it is that I've read US superhero comics and fantasy for years, but I had no problem following the threads here (I've often thought of the Guardians as a myth-based superhero group. especially with the different powers, and their own dimension/fortress of solitude) so the overall arc of the fight of good and evil and the attempts to stay unnoticed among the rest of humanity are something well-known and loved to me.

Personally I think Meljean's pacing is getting better with every book and the characters, dialogue and world-building were brilliant from the start. So the crisis at the end of the book was expected (things had been building to a head) but not the exact nature of the crisis - and considering the novella in Must Love Hellhounds which is set after this novel - the fact that it has consequences that will take years to work out was a surprise (superhero comics can rarely afford that sort of time jump unless they restart the universe and that breaks all the old connections you've built with characters there).

This is my favourite after Colin and Saavi's story.

Robin, I tried to unspam your comment but it doesn't work for me either! I'll try to repost it here and see if mine lands in the spam filter also.

Here's the text of Robin's post:

@Anthea Lawson: Wow, what a great, well-articulated comment! Thank you, especially since I really struggled with not feeling I could do the book justice with this review.

@katiebabs: I didn't have that strong of a response, but I am extremely anxious for the next book now.

@Jocelyn: The line about him not wearing shoes had me laughing out loud for several pages afterward!

@Bonnie L.: Oh, I knew someone was going to ask me this! I do think, Bonnie, that you could pick up this book blind, but I'd at least recommend reading the link I referenced. It has great sections like 'if you are starting with Demon Forged,' etc. I do think that reading the second book before this one (Demon Moon) would give you even more background, but it may be more that you will *get* more stuff that way rather than that you willl be lost if you start with this one. There is enough explanation in the book, I think, to get the major concepts and characters. Does that answer you question, lol.

Okay, I responded to comments, but my comment is in the Spam folder and I can't get it out, even when I try to approve it. So until someone else can get it out, I will quickly tell Bonnie that I do think you can start with Demon Forge, but I recommend you check out the cheat sheet on Brook's site.

I'm just glad I read a review where they told me not to peek at the end before I read this book. I'm an end-reader so it was difficult to resist, but totally worth it. Anyway, great review, and I had to mention that Detective Taylor's internal monologue about Michael is my favorite paragraph in the book. Hilarious.

This is the only book I read this year where my mouth dropped in shock and my hands were shaking over the ending . Demon Forged is my number one book for 2009.
