They only thing I can't get over sometimes is the horrific background some of her heroines have. The idea of what some of them went through makes me a little sqeamish sometimes. I hope that's not the case with Rachel.

Rachel does have a secret, but she does not have the past trauma that some of Goodman’s other heroines do. It was a relief to me, too, frankly, especially after the last few books. In NLAL, Wyatt is actually more tortured by something that happened in his past than Rachel is by hers.
