I was very pleased to read the positive review above, having just this evening finished False Colors for the 2nd time.

Like the reviewer, I was totally convinced by the nautical aspect of this story – being not in the least savvy about such things. I marvelled at it, feeling every cannon ball, every creak of the ship.

On the strength of this tale, I shall certainly be exploring Alex’s oeuvre further. Well done and good luck with future endeavours.

I understand your frustration, Samantha, but it’s not all that rosy for the m/m stories either. This weekend Amazon stripped the sales ranking from False Colors, Transgressions and hundreds of other m/m, f/f and erotica books. That means that now, no matter how well they sell, they can never appear on a bestseller list anywhere – they have essentially been made invisible to anyone not already looking for them. I don’t suppose it’s direct cause and effect, but this did happen just after False Colors and Transgressions began showing up regularly in the mainstream romance top 100.

I’ve also heard this morning that Barnes and Noble have re-classified False Colors and Transgressions in their database as ‘gay literature’ rather than ‘romance’. So it looks as if the conservative backlash has started, and it isn’t going to be as simple as we hoped to get m/m fiction out of its ghetto either.

@samantha: You've got to be kidding me. This issue is probably dependent on individual stores. Sarah F might have said that it will be shelved in the romance section, but you missed Chicklet's comment saying that she found it in the Gay & Lesbian section instead. This isn't even the only issue here. Groups like RT still refuse to review gay romance. And this is what, the first time a major publisher is publishing gay romance. It's their big break. Why rain on the parade?

What’s fascinating is that romance novels written by black authors get shelved in the AA section but a M/M story will get shelved in the romance section. I guess my takeaway is that as long as the story is white it’s right for romance.

Dear Author has discovered what some of us have long known: Alex Beecroft is a magical writer. As both a friend and a fan of Alex, I want to say how glad I am for the amazing review.

And if I may, I’d like to mention another book by Alex that is lesser known but just as magically written, and with magic in the story to boot: Witch’s Boy. I hope the success of False Colors will translate into success for Witch’s Boy as well.

They both deserve to be read and read and read.

I picked up a copy at the downtown Minneapolis B&N over lunch (on the basis of this review!) and found it in the Gay & Lesbian section, not Romance. So if you look in Romance and it’s not there, try the GLBT section.
