No idea when exactly I’m going to read them, or if I’m going to buy or borrow them, or if they’ll end up on my best list at the end of the year, but here are the books I want to read in 2009:

@ Ann Bruce: Asbolutely not! One of the articles I read about Westlake’s death commented how he wrote 3 or 4 books a year long before doing so was popular (and how many pseudonyms he had) and that he was considered one of the best mystery writers ever.

I’ve also read some of his stand-alones, and he did a couple of books about a spy-like character named Grofield (or something like that). But I didn’t enjoy those as much as the Parker books. Westlake was someone I always wanted to meet at a conference some day …

Jane @#50: Yes, she was a fanfic author before. It’s very action packed urban fantasy with a big scoop of romance. Not going to say much more for fear of spoilers, but she finds a new way to break your heart with each book. I can’t wait to see how it’s resolved.

Me? I have to say the finale in Lynn Kurland's Nine Kingdom's trilogy. Princess of the Sword. Except... I already finished it. (It's release date is this week, but my store sold me one out of the box two days ago.) You all know how much I loved the first two, from the guest review I offered on here, and the final book was the perfect ending! I am totally in awe of the beauty of Lynn's writing.

A big DITTO on the Gabaldon book. Although I'm beginning to agree that she is like Auel. She gets too involved with her other projects to put enough into her MAIN series, and by the time the books come out.....well, it gets frustrating to have to wait. She's not quite as bad as Auel though. I almost don't know if I will read book 6 if Auel ever comes out with it. It's been so many years since I read The Shelters of Stone, and it was not that great. I'm also looking forward to Julia Quinn's new books. I'm not sure why everyone disliked Mr. Cavendish so thoroughly, but I read it in conjunction with The Lost Duke of Wyndham. I read them at the same time so that I wouldn't know who ended up being the duke. Maybe that helped my enjoyment of the book. Also looking forward to the new Sookie Stackhouse, more Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran (just finished with Duke of Shadows, and WOW), and I'm REALLY excited for the sequel to The Hunger Games.

I've got a bunch of YA books I want to read. Romance? Eh... Demonkeepers by Jessica Andersen. Just got the second book in the series (haven't read it yet), but the first one seemed fresher and made me more excited than any other romance I've read recently. Marked by Passion by Kate Perry, despite the middling PW review and the fact that it's the start of another series that has something to do with some kind of guardians. On the other hand, the female protagonist has a Chinese last name and it looks like it's written in first-person, so I'm going to buy it just on principle. Ghostland by Jory Strong, even though it's a trade paperback! The Fire King by Marjorie M. Liu. No idea what it's about, but the Dirk & Steele books are pretty much auto-buys for me. New Blood by Gail Dayton doesn't exactly sound like my kind of book -- blood sorceress? "bound to her by blood and magic"? -- but also sounds different enough that I want to give it a try. @Diana Peterfreund: I didn't know Leviathan was coming out this year! "[A]n alt history gilded age living airship romance"? Sounds similar to Kenneth Oppel's series. The third book in Oppel's Matt Cruse series, Starclimber is coming out next month, and, oops, forgot to mention it on my list of YA books I'm looking forward to. And, yeah, need to add Leviathan to the list, too.

No one has mentioned the fifth and final Gardella book yet, Colleen Gleason's As Shadows Fade. Go Team Max! Or the seventh Rachel Morgan book, White Witch, Black Curse by Kim Harrison. Those two novels are probably my most anticipated books right now. Also looking forward to a lot of the books already mentioned, Jacqueline Carey's two books (Santa Olivia, her non-Terre D'Ange book doesn't look bad either), the new Deanna Raybourn, the new Julia Quinn (although I hope it's better than Mister Cavendish, I presume, the new Loretta Chase, the new Joanna Bourne, the new Sherry Thomas, both of Patricia Briggs' new novels, The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss, the last C.L Wilson book (not allowing myself to buy book 3 until book 4 is out). Charlaine Harris, Janet Evanovich and Kelley Armstrong will have to wait until their books are out in paperback - they're no longer on the must buy in hardback-list.

@DS: Don't forget to get All the Windwracked Stars, too ^^. And she is the current Winterqueen at Green Man Review, so they have a ton of her books reviewed right now. I think the only one missing is Undertow, which is also excellent if different (as all her books are).

@ Ann B.: I love the Dortmunder series too. Westlake also wrote some more noir-type thrillers about a thief named Parker under the name Richard Stark. Those are really good too if you’re looking for more Westlake to read.

@ Estara No, I wasn’t aware of that– but I’ve been picking up her books here and there– some in hard copy, some ebook and audible.com has about four all released in the last three months that I have bought but haven’t had time to listen to– I’m really hoping to be sent on a few long car trips so I can catch up with these. But everything I’ve read by her I have enjoyed more than average. I ‘ll put New Amsterdam in my shopping cart next time I’m on Amazon– oh, heck, why wait. I’ll go buy it now before the US publishers fall into financial ruin.

@Ann Bruce: I know! First Pinter, then Westlake. It's all a bit of a blow, coming so soon after Studs Terkel. I hope Gore Vidal has been drinking his Ensure. Westlake's book is supposed to be out in April; I just looked it up.

@Keri M: I can't get enough of Konrath. A wonderful blend of police procedural, smart heroine, and comedic wit. The cliffhanger in the last book, though, was cruel and unusual and I told him so.

I also think there's a new (and final) book coming from Donald Westlake, who died this week. Very sad since I love so many of his books.

No! I started reading his Dortmunder series last year and it's a blast.
