I recently bought this book because I am somewhat enamored of anything/everything to do with the Civil War era. Plus, I too thought the cover was lovely.

I have read a few Steeple Hill books in the past few months and speaking as someone who is stone-cold Agnostic, I haven’t found the books to be overly preachy whatsoever. Faith is discussed yet you aren’t, IMO, hit over the head with it.

I’ve been fairly pleased with most of the Steeple Hill line that I’ve tried. Sometimes the HEA/marriage proposal seems rushed – which I don’t quite understand unless it’s considered standard for this line to end with one.

Re: the lack of sex. Sorry, I assumed that to be understood with this line but perhaps I should have been mentioning it all along. I agree with you that I didn’t see it as a negative and the lack of it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story.

I have this! I’ve been carrying it around in my tote bag, and haven’t had a chance to start yet. But tonight’s the night. Let me add that I find the Love Inspired Historicals to be very well done, very well written, and always with good solid characters. The settings are refreshing and well-researched, and most often American — Civil War, western, and Depression-era, to name a few. I’ve read several and have never been disappointed. The “preached to” aspect is completely missing; rather, the “inspiration” comes from the transformation of the lead characters from deep cynicism to a sense of inner peace and a renewal of faith as a result of observing other peoples’ lives: show, don’t tell is the key to the “inspiration” in these books, and it is very subtle, indeed. I do feel compelled to say that if you’re looking for sex and explicit passion — forgettabout it. But don’t worry — the romance doesn’t suffer. Considering that I enjoy good erotica, I think of these historicals as wonderful little comfort reads. Enjoy!

I am so not a kind of reader who wants to be preached at so it’s something I make sure I address in reviews. Both these characters think about their faith and, in the end, I can tell it’s important to them but I didn’t feel as if they were trying to make a convert of me. If that helps.

I thought this one looked very good. I hate being preached at and I’ve avoided the “Love Inspired” line, but I’m adding this one to my TBR pile.

oooh…this sounds interesting. I’m always interested in historicals set anywhere but the Regency. *skips off to amazon to look for the book*
