@Jane: Thanks! I wondered about those questions but didn't let it get in the way of a fun read - bc really I didn't know the technicalities of it all.

@Michelle: No most attorneys can try cases in other jurisdictions under a pro hac vice motion (usually requiring local counsel) and an EEOC claim can be tried in state court.

I read this book on the train yesterday and really enjoyed it. It was a very fun read. I didn't feel like much touched the characters emotionally - they were relatively superficial, so I wasn't emotionally vested in/bonded with them - but it was a really fun read and I plan to get her other book out this month.

If any lawyer reads this, would Taylor have to be "barred" in CA to be able to argue the trial? Or, since it involved the EEOC, would it be argued in federal court? And, no I'm not a lawyer, but I know several. :)

Reading the review, I was thinking that your issues with Taylor's perfection were just what I was complaining about with a male character in another novel. What a kick to read the author's comment and learn that's exactly what was going on. I look forward to reading this one.

How interesting that Taylor was made to be intentionally super strong. I wonder if I am projecting an unconscious bias onto her (the idea that women are harder on women). I did enjoy the lawyerly bits because you so obviously know the topic and I'll definitely look for future books from you. Congrats on making the transition from law to screenwriter to published author.

Dear Jane,

Nice catch on the Austin/Dallas connection. I'll have to be sneakier with these things in the future... Thanks for the review-- in terms of Taylor being a bit "super human," that was not unintentional. In books and movies, the hero often has superhuman-type qualities, and I thought it'd be fun to do it with the heroine instead. Like all things, this is a choice that will work for some but not for others. Nevertheless, the lawyer-turned-screenwriter in me is pleased to hear you liked the courtroom scenes and the dialogue, and the author in me is glad the book generated a lot of smiles.

Best,
Julie James
