I am also going to the side of I loved this book. The first have was a bit complex in that maybe I am just not interested in the Uprising of 1857 in India, however, I loved the set up for the two characters. I thought the second have was wonderful. Especially the middle of the book, which usually looses me when I am reading romance. Looking forward to future books by Meredith!

limecello and Sherry: I really hope you enjoy it! As a longtime fan of Meredith's reader contributions on various Romance sites, I REALLY wanted to love this book. But, as sherryfair said once, reading Romance is like blind dating -- you either hit or miss and it's partially a chemical reaction. Sherry, your comparison to Kinsale's FMLH is interesting, because there are definitely scenes (like the jousting, etc.) that don't captivate me, but I felt the writing and characterizations were more consistent. Because DOS felt uneven to me, that made me more sensitive to the stuff that didn't work for me, I think.

Janine, Ann, and Nicole: I am very much looking forward to Meredith's next book, because even though this one didn't hit home for me, parts of it did.

Maya and GrowlyCub: Rangoon is the only Monson book I've read and would love suggestions for others. I've been afraid to read Stormfire because I can take a morally ambiguous hero, but not one unremittingly cruel, and I tend to be sensitive to rape in Romance. Also, I wanted to say that I don't feel that the writing in Rangoon is anywhere near as accomplished as that in DOS, but I thought the cultural acuity in Rangoon was really powerful.

Jayne and Jane: I understand why you feel the way you did. I am thrilled that many readers seem to love the first section, but whether my expectations were too high or something, I really struggled through that section, and had I not known Meredith at all, I probably would not have finished the book. I will say, though, that I soooo wish more books were set in locations like India, in part because the cultural issues are so compelling, IMO.

Kirsten: I had to resist the temptation to make the STF comparison in the second half of DOS, in part because STF is so beloved to me that it's hard for any book to live up to that reading experience. STF made me cry, which is very unusual for me, and even though that book is far from perfect, again, it just feels like it's more fully developed. IMO DOS really needed AT LEAST fifty more pages (mostly in the first section) to take me where I felt the novel wanted me to go.

Robin:

I haven't read this yet, but the second part of the book sounds like the work that Sheraton had to do (off screen) to bring Olympia back from the brink. (Kinsale's Seize the Fire)

I'm a new dear author reader (I now plan to visit daily) but I need to side with the "I really loved it" side of the house. For me, this book was an A. I loved the language, the characters, and the emotional twists and turns. I stayed up all night reading this one. And I can't wait for her next.

I love Christine Monson, too, Maya, but I think the reason why she doesn't get mentioned much is because of the rather many 'non-consensual' sex scenes. I'm thinking particularly about Stormfire, which I loved but find that it didn't age so well.

what a fascinating book - so many eloquent, intelligent reviewers seeing it from such differing perspectives. a love-it-or-hate-it book - doesn't seem to leave anyone indifferent! i'm paying special attention to the comparison with 'rangoon', which i thought was a very powerful book with unforgettable protagonists. i'm very sad that christine monson is almost never mentioned when sites and blogs get into favorite author discussions - she was brilliant.

I began reading this books with high hopes. Too high as it turns out. I barely made it past the initial uprising when the heroine (already forgotten her name) and the hero (his too) escape from Dehli. It was a struggle to make it to that point and I agree totally with Janet about "Julian as the rake, Emma as the virgin, Marcus as the eevil suitor."

I also didn't find the prose more than serviceable. Certainly not horrible but not anything out of the ordinary. Would I have enjoyed the second half more? Maybe but the effort to get there wasn't worth it to me.

I read it in one sitting. I don't read much historical romance anymore, but this one blew me away. I found the whole book powerful and gorgeously written. I saw Emma as very emotionally battered and at sea in part one, adrift from familiar moorings. Thus, I thought the prologue offered a physical parallel to the events that followed her bereavement.

I also thought her relationship with her betrothed offered just what one might expect. He wanted a traditional English miss, who would be happy with however he chose to conduct himself. Emma was not that woman. When she began to show favor to his despised half-caste cousin, I think he went a bit mad. He might not have been so bad in other regards, but I think he utterly lost his reason where Emma was concerned. I didn't see him so much evil as weak and envious. Envy can make people do terrible things.

I must confess, I saw little of the rake in Julian's character. By my definition, a rake pursues excess for its own sake, as a means of driving away ennui. He games, he whores, and he drinks; he has few deep passions. Julian does not come off as jaded to me, merely a soul divided. He is passionate about India... and Emma. He loves his maternal family deeply, even though that affection is unwelcome.

As for Emma, she doesn't fit the typical virgin profile for me either. She is assumed to have forfeited her virtue already, in fact, and I feel quite sure her betrothed only wants to marry her, despite her soiled reputation, because of her fortune. She's not missish. She has a wild streak that makes her long for adventure (although I'm sure she comes to regret that wish). I also found a nice symbolic parallel between Emma's wild streak and the backdrop of India, actually.

Anyway, as the world knows by now, I really loved this book.

Readers should be aware that I critiqued a little bit of the book. I thought this a very thoughtful review. I liked The Duke of Shadows better than you did, Robin, I think. While I agree that the first half wasn't as powerful as the second, it also didn't take me anywhere near two weeks to read it. I was swept up in the lovely descriptions of India, in the heroine's survivor's guilt and the hero's being torn between two cultures. However, it was the later portions that blew me away. The scene with the globe was amazing, and the sex scenes intense and powerful as well. For me, even if the book had held no other pleasures, it would have been worth keeping for those scenes alone, and I truly believe that Meredith is a writer to watch.

This book sounds perfect for me. I don't judge a book by its entirety, only by the portions that impact me. I am fairly sure, for instance, that I have never read all of For My Lady's Heart--the sizable portion of external conflict where the villain comes in just didn't interest me very much--yet I recommend that book at every turn because where it's powerful, it's so supremely powerful.

The passages you quoted are wonderful, Robin. I can't wait to get to them.
