Just want to note for any that stumble across this review: in the intervening two years since it was written, _Ender's_Game_ and many other of Card's books have become available in various e-book formats. For those who prefer e-versions, it may be worth your while to take a look for for it in your preferred flavor.

The audible version is amazing. The only thing better than reading Enders is to have it read to you.

Ender's Game is among my all-time favorite books. I've read it multiple times now (first time in college) and especially enjoyed the multi-voice audiobook that featured Scott Brick.

In general, Orson Scott Card is *not* an easy read and I agree with the earlier poster that the official sequels of this novel (Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide) are not for the faint hearted.

I read this book. And I am very mixed about it. I liked the ending. Bu I disliked the lead character and almost all the human interaction that happened in the story. The book strikes me as very cold, distant, and analytical. After reading it, I was left with no desire to read further in the series.

I had to read this book for my Reader's Advisory class because so many people do read it and want suggestions for what to read after they finish. I am not a SF by any means but wow, I was hooked and impressed. Ender was such a great character and this review did a great job of hitting on all the points as to why I enjoyed it so much. All I could think before reading it was "I don't want to read about aliens and technology" but then, I read it and while the story certainly uses those themes, they are by no means the most important parts.

I wanted to recommend Feed by MT Anderson which I read soon after finishing Ender's Game. Feed was, for me, another SF type book that I normally would never have read except for as an assignment, but wow, great story.

I think I'll pick this one up too. I keep hearing what a kick-ass book it is, but this is the first comprehensive review I've ever read on the book, and it's convinced me to put it at the top of my to-be-read pile.

MaryK, that particular sentence was the culmination of my efforts to convince my wife (a professor of Victorian literature) that she would actually enjoy the book, in spite of it's being Sci-Fi. Did the trick too. :)

I don't really care that much for the remaining three books in the original series, liking them less as they go along, but the _Shadow_ series (of which _Ender's_Shadow_ is but the first) I like almost as well as the original. They are much more in the same vein as _Ender's_Game_ than its official sequels.

I'm glad that so many folks have enjoyed the review.

This has always been a favorite of mine and my husband's.

I may be alone in this, but I think Speaker for the Dead is an essential part of the Ender reading experience. The books after that in the timeline though are a waste.

This is not that sort of Sci-Fi, but rather focuses mainly on the story of Humanity as it interacts with technology, rather than the other way round.

I love this sentence! This is one of the reasons I mostly avoid SF - I'm not interested in reading about Tech as a main character. I've always meant to read Ender's Game eventually because I know it's an "important" novel, but this has convinced me to actually put it on my TBR list. Great review!

laura, there's several blogs (here's one) that follow the ongoing effort to have the Ender series made into movies. For a while the age of the characters and the fact that the actors would age faster than the series could get made (the Harry Potter Syndrome) had things stymied, then it was in pre-production (Card wrote the screenplay), then it died again. IMDB still lists it as coming out in 2008, but that's not going to happen.

I love this book, have re-read it countless times. (I think I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed the entire quartet -- but this book was above and beyond the others.) I've got a list of books that, as soon as my daughter is old enough to read, I'll be pushing on her. This is at the top of it.

Oh, yes, absolutely don't forget Ender's Shadow, the companion book. I can highly recommend listening to it on audiobook instead of reading it (or in addition to). I think I loved it even more than Ender's Game, although I adored Ender's Game ! If Ender was an unlikely and almost unwilling hero, then Bean (from Shadow) is an even more complex and amazing character. You know what else, Empire was pretty darn great, too. Amazing storyteller.
