You know, when I saw that the first two tags were Companion and Doctor, my mind went to a completely different place. *grins*

It's definitely a good book because, Phyl, as you say, the character of Gillian and how she views the world with a sort of wistful resignation does make the story rise above its obvious flaws. With a less accomplished writer, those flaws could really crater this story.

Kerry, what ones do you recommend? I haven't read Ranney in a while and want to pick up her backlist which appears to be digitized. Yeah, Avon.

Jennyfer & Shannon - I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up. It's not heavy on the Scottish setting other than, perhaps, the landscape.

Megan - I am so glad I am not the only one. I do this with more than one author, particularly if they write in the same period because I just don't have a good enough memory to keep everyone apart.

I liked this book more than you did mostly because I liked the way Ms. Ranney slowly reveals Gillian's back story (the unnamed disgrace) to us. Gillian has a realistic view of the world and I think she accurately reflects how tenuous a sense of security would be for a single woman with few means of support. Gillian is not your typical historical romance heroine (yea!) so that for me this book is set apart from others despite some of its drawbacks. I really enjoyed it.

Karen Ranney is definitely my favorite Karen writing today, although I think I'm about to become addicted to Karen Rose's books.

For me the plot was not just transparently telegraphed, but had a big red "Here's the Villian!" arrow. It wasn't one of Ranney's better efforts. She's a good author though.

I don't typically read historicals but it sounds like maybe I should broaden my horizons a bit. Sounds like an interesting premise.

I do this, too. Although I've been thinking of trying this particular Karen for a while. This looks really fun.

Until recently, I also "got you mixed up with another author named Karen and I thought you and she were the same person so I haven't picked up any books of yours since 2005."

I can't believe you did it, too! About the same author, and everything! I just bought this, too, since I realized my mistake one Ranney book ago.
