I agree that the book started better than it ended. But as to Ruby…well sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I wouldn’t doubt that there are people out there who would act as Ruby did.

I didn’t like this novel, the title was just something she got from one line in the whole book without having anything to do at all with the story! and the reason she made up to justify Ruby’s disappearance was just lame, who in their right mind would spend 50 years of their life in the woods taking care of dogs and letting opportunities in life to just go away!? because she was wrongly accused?? c’mon!!! it started good but it went downhill…

I love her essays, though IMO she has gotten a little less funny with each book. But still funny enough to pay retail :). I will have to pick this one up and see how she does fiction. Thanks for reviewing it. I didn’t even know about it.

I love Notaro’s essay books and I was waiting for her to write a novel for a long time. I thought this was pretty delightful. A lot of times there’s a real disappointment when a funny non-fic writer turns to novels, but this one was a pretty good transition. (Though no one will beat Dave Barry’s Big Trouble. I thought that book was downright hilarious when I read it. Sadly his fictional follow-ups haven’t been quite as funny.)

I haven’t read this, but her “We Thought You Would Be Prettier” (non-fiction) was very funny. I especially loved her thoughts on her own book tour. :)
