Bev - Thanks for your comments. My grading system is a gut feeling and I just felt like this was a B-. But each reader's opinion will be different.

Ro - Rachel Gibson is another contemporary writer but she lost her magic for me a while back. Too many contemporary romance writers rely on gimmicks - cutesy gimmicks - to pad their stories. I really miss the traditional romance. I wonder if that is why Harlequin Presents is still popular so many years later. Hmm. Must think on this. Sounds like a good Op Letter for a Monday.

I too liked the story for the very reasons that you have given. Add in the family dynamics and the review should have been higher than a B-!

...this book reminded me of what I have missed in romance and that is a traditional character driven story featuring two people who are a) human and b) not a member of some enforcement division, finding each other and growing to love each other.

I've been missing that, too. Especially if you add c) not in danger of being killed by a psychotic killer. Who's still doing that nowadays? Off the top of my head, I can only think of SEP.
